NOTE: Gravity varies by location, and so does weight.5 Test specimens5.1 If the conditioning is carried out, the specimen shall be dried to constant weight before volume measurement. Carefully select appropriate drying conditions to prevent changes in the density of the test material. 5.2 The test material may be in the form of powder, granules, flakes and sheets. Other materials may also be cut into any shape suitable for the volume size of the gas pycnometer used. Avoid density changes due to compressive stress during cutting. The specimens of materials containing closed pores shall be prepared by suitable methods, such as grinding. 5.3 If the conditioning may cause the change in the specimen density to be greater than the required accuracy of the measurement, the conditioning shall be carried out according to the relevant material standards before the test. Sometimes, it may be required that the conditioning is carried out under the conditions of specified humidity or achieving constant crystallinity. 5.4 When changes in density as a function of time or ambient conditions are the main purpose of the determination, conditions of the specimen conditioning shall be calibrated according to the consensus reached by all parties.6 CalibrationAdjust the temperature of the gas pycnometer to the required value, preferably (23±1) °C. Adjust the volume of the gas pycnometer to the required value or measure the volume of the empty gas pycnometer. Measure the mass of a calibration specimen of known density with an accuracy of 0.1 mg, or use a calibration specimen of known volume. Place the calibration specimen in the measurement chamber and purge it with the measurement gas for 3 minutes to remove air and moisture adsorbed on the specimen surface. If necessary, allow additional time for the temperature to equilibrate. When the preset temperature is reached, place the specimen in accordance with the specific operating instructions for the type of gas pycnometer used and measure the volume change or the resulting pressure change. Determine the calibration factor kc using equation (3) or equation (4). NOTE: When using a pressure-type instrument, the volume of the specimen can be calculated from the pressure change using the ideal gas pressure-volume relationship (Boyle-Mariotte law). Some gas pycnometers can automatically calculate the volume of the specimen. ......Source: Above contents are excerpted from the full-copy PDF -- translated/reviewed by: www.ChineseStandard.net / Wayne Zheng et al.
