1 Scope

This Standard specifies methods of sample preparation and analysis for the determination of copper and other elements in brake friction materials. This Standard is applicable to brake friction materials that have not been used.

2 Normative References

The following documents are indispensable to the application of this Standard. In terms of references with a specified date, only versions with a specified date are applicable to this Standard. The latest version (including all the modifications) of references without a specified date is applicable to this Standard. GB 5085.3-2007 Identification Standards for Hazardous Wastes - Identification for Extraction Toxicity GB/T 15555.1 Solid Waste - Determination of Total Mercury - Cold Atomic Absorption Spectrometry GB/T 15555.4 Solid Waste - Determination of Chromium (VI)-1,5 - Diphenylcarbohydrazide Spectrophotometric Method GB/T 23942 Chemical Reagent - General Rules for Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry GB/T 23946 Inorganic Chemicals for Industrial Use - General Method for the Determination of Lead Content - Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

3 Sample Preparation

3.1 Sample Acquisition 3.1.1 Use wool-free paper (for example, thin and soft water-absorbing paper) to wipe the whole friction assembly. If necessary, repeatedly wipe it, so as to guarantee that there is absolutely no dust or foreign substance on the assembly. Moreover, use deionized water to rinse the assembly, then, use wool-free paper to absorb water. 3.1.2 Measure the thickness of friction material. If there is no steel-back or hoof-iron,

(Informative) Automobile Brake Evaluation Standard A.1 Type “A” Designated Material “A + production-year” designated material refers to material whose content of heavy metal and asbestos fiber, which is determined in accordance with this Standard, shall be lower than the requirement in Table A.1. A.2 Type “B” Designated Material “B + production-year” designated material refers to material which satisfies the requirement “A”; the copper content, which is determined in accordance with this Standard, shall be lower than 5% of the requirement. Please refer to Table A.1. A.3 Type “N” Designated Material “N + production-year” designated material refers to material which satisfies the requirement “A”; the content of copper and other compounds, which is determined in accordance with this Standard, shall be lower than 0.5% of the requirement. Please refer to Table A.1. Table A.1 -- Content Requirement of Designated Material Example 1.material “A15” refers to the material, which is produced in 2015 and satisfies the requirement of Type “A” designated material. Example 2.material “B16” refers to the material, which is produced in 2016 and satisfies the requirement of Type “B” designated material.
