Textiles – Evaluation for biodegradability of nonwovens – Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide1 ScopeThis standard specifies the determination and evaluation of the biodegradation of nonwovens by measuring the evolved carbon dioxide. This standard applies to nonwovens. Fiber, yarn, other types of textiles and their products may make reference to this standard.2 Normative referencesThe following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the amendments) are applicable to this Standard. GB/T 6529 Textiles – Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing GB/T 6682 Water for analytical laboratory use – specification and test methods GB/T 19276.2-2003 Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in an aqueous medium – Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide3 PrinciplesThe sample is placed in the soil bacteria suspension AND is subject to biodegradability; after a certain period of time, the percentage of the total emission amount of inorganic carbon of the sample to the total inorganic carbon content of the original sample is tested, to judge the biodegradability of this sample.4 Reagents and instruments4.1 Medium and reagents 4.1.1 General provisions The reagents and water used in this standard, unless otherwise the microbiological reagents shall comply with the microbiological requirements, in the absence of other requirements, refer to the analytical pure reagent and the level III water as specified in GB/T 6682. (37 ± 2) °C and 190 r/min for 24 h, to obtain the first generation of soil bacteria suspension. 6.1.3 TAKE 100mL of LB liquid medium; INOCULATE 1 ml of the first generation of soil bacteria suspension (6.1.2); PLACE it in the constant temperature oscillator (4.2.6); MAKE it subject to vibration culture at (37 ± 2) °C and 190 r/min for 24 h, to obtain the second generation of soil bacteria suspension. 6.2 Determination of total organic carbon content 6.2.1 TURN on the total organic carbon analyzer (4.2.9); PREHEAT it for 30 min. 6.2.2 CLEAN the high temperature resistant sample cup of the total organic carbon analyzer; USE the electronic balance (4.2.2) to weigh 50 mg ~ 100 mg of sample (5.2) (depending on the test range and accuracy of the instrument), accurate to 0.1 mg; PLACE it into the sample cup. 6.2.3 ADD 100 μL ~ 200 μL of HCl solution at a concentration of 5% to the sample cup to cover the sample. PLACE the sample cup in the constant temperature oven (4.2.4) to heat it, to remove the inorganic carbon which may present in the sample; the heating temperature is 40 °C ~ 80 °C, which shall be less than the sample melting point for over 10 °C; AND heating time is about 2 h. 6.2.4 INSTALL the sample cup in the proper position of the total organic carbon analyzer. After setting up the operating procedure, TURN on the instrument, to make the sample in the sample cup totally burn, AND the evolved CO2 will be completely collected. 6.2.5 In accordance with the CO2 collected from the sample combustion, USE the formula (1) to calculate the mass fraction (%) Atc of the organic carbon content in the sample. 6.2.6 REPEAT steps 6.2.2 ~ 6.2.5; TEST the rest two samples; TAKE the average value of the 3 samples; ROUND it off to 0.1%. Where. Atc - Mass fraction of organic carbon in the sample (%); mtc - Amount of organic carbon in the sample, in milligrams (mg), accurate to 0.1mg; mo1 – Mass of sample weighed in 6.2.2, in milligrams (mg), accurate to 0.1 mg. 6.3 Determination of evolved inorganic carbon 9 forwards to connect the bottle 6; and at the original position of the bottle 9, ADD one bottle of 200 mL Ba(OH)2 solution (4.1.5). 6.3.7 USE the same interval time in 6.3.6, respectively MAKE titration against the subsequent Ba(OH)2 solution of the 3 groups; meanwhile ADD fresh Ba(OH)2 solution; AND the rest can be done in the same manner, until the sample is subject degradation for 90 days; USE the formula (2) to calculate the percentage Atic of the total amount of inorganic carbon evolved from the sample under the biodegradation effect to the sample mass; TAKE the average value of the two groups of parallel tests; ROUND it off to 0.1%. Where. Atic – The percentage of total inorganic carbon evolved by the sample under the biodegradation effect to the sample mass, %; mi – The ith inorganic carbon sampling amount of the sample under the biodegradation effect, in milligrams (mg), accurate to 0.1 mg; mo2 – The mass of the sample weighed in 6.3.2, in milligrams (mg), accurate to 0.1 mg.7 Results and evaluation7.1 Calculation of biodegradability The calculation of biodegradability is as shown in formula (3). Where. η - Biodegradability, rounding off to 0.1%; Atic - The percentage of total inorganic carbon evolved by the sample under the biodegradation effect to the sample mass, %; Atc – The mass fraction of organic carbon in the sample (%). 7.2 Evaluation of biodegradability As for the nonwoven fabric of a single fiber component, in the 90 days test time, when the biodegradability η of the sample reaches above 60%, it can be deemed that this sample is biodegradable. ......Source: Above contents are excerpted from the full-copy PDF -- translated/reviewed by: www.ChineseStandard.net / Wayne Zheng et al.
