Magnesium and Magnesium Alloy Scraps1 ScopeThis Standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules and markings, packaging, transportation, storage, contract content, etc. for magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps. This Standard is applicable to magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps produced in each production process and use process.2 Normative ReferencesThe provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies. GB/T 13748 (all parts) Chemical Analysis Methods of Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys3 Terms and DefinitionsFor the purposes of this Standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 Coatings Surface layers other than native oxide layers. Example: oil, paint, magnesium coating. 3.2 Contaminant Harmful physical or chemical foreign substances contained in returns. Example: water, foundry sand. 3.3 Inserts A part of metal or other substance that is inserted at the time of casting or at a certain location in a finished product. Example: bearings, threaded inserts. 3.4 Returns Various types of magnesium and magnesium alloy materials that are collected or recycled at various stages of production. 3.5 Turnings Magnesium and magnesium alloy materials in the shape of pellets, flakes, rolls, strips, etc. produced by machining or other processing.4 Requirements4.1 Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are mainly divided into three categories (Class I, Class II, Class Ill) and nine grades (Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9) according to their physical forms. 4.2 Class I magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are in the form of block and are divided into five grades, namely, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5. 4.3 Class II magnesium and magnesium alloy scarps are in the form of chip and are divided into three grades, namely, Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8. 4.4 Class III magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are in the form of slag and are divided into one grade, namely, Grade 9. 4.5 Classification and grading of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall meet the requirements in Table 1. 4.6 Both the supplier and the buyer can also refer to Appendix A (informative) for the detailed classification and grading principles of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps specified; and refer to Appendix B (informative) for the arrangement of scrap codes. Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be submitted for acceptance in batches; and each batch shall consist of scraps of the same grade. 6.3 Inspection items The inspection items of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be negotiated by both parties. The supplier should provide the alloy designation of each batch of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps. 6.4 Sampling The sampling method for chemical composition analysis of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps and arbitration shall be negotiated by both parties; and arbitration sampling shall be jointly conducted by both parties. 6.5 Judgment of test results When the classification and grading or the chemical composition of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps do not meet the provisions of this Standard, the supplier and purchaser shall negotiate to resolve it.7 Marking, Packaging, Transportation and Storage7.1 Marking The outer packaging of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be marked with signs or labels of the following elements of scraps, such as class, grade, alloy designation (can be omitted), weight, and date. 7.2 Packaging, transportation and storage Magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps are packaged in woven bags or iron drums; or in a packaging method agreed upon by both the supplier and the purchaser. During transportation, it shall be transported separately and waterproof and fireproof measures shall be taken; measures shall be taken to prevent scraps of different grades from being mixed up during transportation. It shall be stored in a ventilated and dry environment; and it is forbidden to store together with oxidants and acidic substances. It is strictly forbidden to mix explosives, closed containers, flammable substances, toxic substances, etc. during transportation and storage. 7.3 Quality certificate Each batch of magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps shall be accompanied by a quality certificate that meets the requirements of this Standard, indicating: a) supplier’s name, address, telephone number, and fax; b) scrap grade; c) alloy designation (can be omitted); d) net weight and number of pieces; e) The seal of the technical supervision department; f) the number of this Standard; g) Exit-factory date (or date of packaging).8 Contents of the ContractThe contract for ordering magnesium and magnesium alloy scraps covered by this Standard shall include the following contents: a) scrap grade; b) alloy designation (can be omitted); c) weight and allowable error; d) Items required by this standard that should be indicated in the contract; e) the number of this Standard; f) negotiation results when adding content other than this Standard. ......Source: Above contents are excerpted from the full-copy PDF -- translated/reviewed by: www.ChineseStandard.net / Wayne Zheng et al.
