IForeword
Chapter 4, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 of this standard are
mandatory and the others are recommendatory.
This standard is modified in relation to ISO 18283. 2006(E) "Hard Coal and
Coke-Manual Sampling" (English version).
This standard was re-drafted mainly according to ISO 18283. 2006(E). The list for
comparison of chapter and article numbers between this standard and ISO 18283. 2006(E) is
given in Appendix A.
In consideration of the national condition of China, this standard is subjected to some
modifications in the adoption of ISO 18283. 2006(E). Technical differences have already been
incorporated into the text and marked with perpendicular single line at the margin of relevant
clauses. The list for these technical differences and their reasons is given in Appendix B for
reference.
For convenient application, some editorial changes are made to ISO 18283. 2006(E) as
follows.
——"This international standard" is replaced by "this standard";
——Introduction of ISO 18283. 2006(E) is modified;
——Comma ",", which serves as decimal point in ISO standard, is replaced by ".".
This standard replaces GB 474-1996 "Preparation of Coal Sample".
Compared with GB 474-1996, main changes of this standard are as follows.
——Contents on general and precision of sample preparation (Chapter 3 of the original
edition and Chapter 4 of this edition) are improved;
——Contents on sample constitution are added (Chapter 6 of this edition);
——"Coal sample greater than 25mm (particle size) shall not be divided before being
crushed" is modified into "division may be carried out at any stage and the minimum mass of
divided sample shall meet those specified in 7.2" (6.3 of the original edition and 7.1 of this
edition);
——The minimum mass of divided sample at each particle size level is modified (6.7 of
the original edition and 7.2 of this edition);
——Contents on mechanical dividing method and mechanical divider are added (7.3 of
this edition);
——Two manual dividing methods are added (7.4.2 and 7.4.3 of this edition);
——Detailed explanations and specifications on division, reduction, mixing and
air-drying etc. are added (Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9 and Chapter 10 of this edition);
——Preparation methods of various coal samples are added (Chapter 11 of this edition);
——Operating requirements for extracting moisture sample of coal from common
sample of coal with the nine-point picking out method are defined (11.4.1 of this edition).
Appendix A and Appendix B of this standard are informative, Appendix C and Appendix
D of this standard are normative.
This national standard is proposed by the China National Coal Association.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Coal
Chemical Industry of Standardization Administration of China.
1NATIONAL STANDARD
OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
Method for Preparation of Coal Sample
1 Scope
This standard specifies terms and definitions, sample constitution, reduction, mixing,
division and air-drying for coal sample preparation, the preparation of various coal samples
and reserve sample.
This standard is applicable to lignite, bitumite and hard coal.
2 Normative References
The following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this standard,
constitute provisions of this standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to
(excluding correction to), or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However,
parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of
applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. For undated references, its
latest editions apply.

3 Terms and Definitions
Terms and definitions specified in GB 475 and those below are applicable to this
standard.
3.1
Sample preparation
2Process of bring samples to the condition required for analysis or testing.
Note. Sample preparation covers mixing, particle size reduction, sample division and sometimes sieving and air-drying of
the sample and may be performed in several stages.
3.2
Sample division
Process in sample preparation whereby the sample is divided into representative,
separate portions.
3.3
Fixed mass division
Method of sample division in which the mass retained is predetermined and independent
of the mass of the divided sample.
3.4
Fixed ratio division
Method of sample division in which the division ratio is predetermined, i.e. the mass of
sample retained is a fixed proportion to the mass of the divided sample.
3.5
Cut
Increment obtained through cutting with primary sampler or sample divider.
3.6
Cutter
Equipment for obtaining increment by cutting.
3.7
Sample reduction
Process in sample preparation whereby the particle size of the sample is reduced by
crushing or grinding.
3.8
Air-drying
Process of bringing the moisture content of the sample near to equilibrium with the
atmosphere in the area in which further reduction and division of the sample are to take place.
3.9
Air-dried
State in which the mass variation of coal sample doesn't exceed 0.1% after the coal
sample is dried continuously in air for 1h.
4 General and Precision of Sample Preparation
4.1 General of Sample Preparation
4.1.1 The purpose is to prepare the coal sample, which can represent characteristics of the
original coal sample, for analysis (test) through reduction, mixing, division and air-drying etc.
4.1.2 Precision verification and bias test shall be carried out for sample preparation
procedures and equipment in the following circumstances.
a) Where sample preparation procedures are adopted or changed for the first time;
b) Where new dividers and sample preparation systems are put into service;
3c) Where sample preparation precision is in doubt;
d) Where the sample preparation precision is considered to be checked.
4.1.3 Sample preparation shall be carried out in the special sample preparation room and
sample contamination shall be avoided during the process; the sample preparation equipment
shall be cleaned up after each preparation and sample preparation personnel shall wear special
shoes during the process.
For the sealed crusher and jointed reduction/division machine that are difficult to sweep,
when they are only used to treat large amount of single-variety coal sample, before treating
the coal sample, the sampled coal may be “washed...
