Polymer water-proof materials - Part 2.Waterstop
1 Scope
This Part of GB 18173 specifies the classification and markings, requirements,
test methods, inspection rules, symbols, packaging, transportation and storage
of the waterstops made of polymer water-proof materials.
This Part is applicable to all or part of the rubber waterstops poured in the
concrete or adhered to the concrete surfaces, composite waterstops with
hydrophilic expansion rubber, rubber waterstops with steel edges, and rubber
waterstops and rubber composite waterstops for the pipe joints of immersed
tunnels (hereinafter referred to as “waterstops”).

3 Classification and markings
3.1 Classification
3.1.1 The waterstops can be divided into three categories according to the
applications.
3.1.2 The waterstops can be divided into two categories according to the
structure type.
3.2.2 Marking examples
Example 1.Composite waterstops with steel edges for construction joints, which are 300mm wide and
8mm thick, shall be marked as. S-FG-300 × 8.
4 Requirements
4.1 Dimensional tolerances
The schematic diagram for the waterstop structure is shown in Figure 1.The
dimensional tolerances of the waterstop shall conform to the provisions of
Tables 1 and 2.
4.2 Appearance quality
4.2.1 The deviation of waterstop’s center hole is not allowed to exceed 1/3 of
the design value of the wall thickness.
4.2.2 It is not allowed to have cracks and sponge-like defects on the waterstop
surfaces.
4.3 Physical properties
4.3.1 The physical property requirements and corresponding test methods for
the rubber materials of waterstops shall conform to the provisions of Table 3.
4.3.2 The indicator of the tensile strength at the joints of the waterstop shall
not be less than 80% of the specified value in Table 3 (except the site
construction joints).
5 Test methods
5.1 Dimensional tolerances
USE a measuring tool to measure the specifications. The thickness and width
shall be respectively accurate to 0.05mm and 1mm. TAKE 1m of product at
random as sample (for the waterstop processed by molding vulcanization, at
least one joint shall be included). TAKE four points in the symmetrical position
on the product surface from both ends for measurement. TAKE the arithmetic
mean value of the results.
5.3 Physical properties
5.3.1 Test piece preparation and conditioning
CUT an enough length of product passing the specification and appearance
quality inspections as required by the test. CONDUCT the test piece
preparation according to the provisions of GB/T 2941.PLACE the test pieces
in standard status for 24h. CONDUCT the test according to the requirements of
Table 3.
5.3.6 Brittle temperature
The brittle temperature determination shall be carried out according to the
provisions of GB/T 15256.
5.3.7 Hot air ageing
The hot air ageing test shall be carried out according to the provisions of GB/T
3512.
5.3.8 Ozone ageing
The ozone ageing test shall be carried out according to the provisions of GB/T
7762.
5.3.9 Rubber and metal adhesion properties
5.3.9.1 Sample dimensions
As shown in Figure 2, USE finished products as test pieces during the rubber
and metal adhesion test. The test pieces shall be (20 ± 1) mm wide. The
adhesion length of rubber and steel plates l shall be the actual dimensions of
the product.
Figure 2 Test Piece for Rubber and Metal Adhesion
5.3.9.2 Test procedures
Respectively CLAMP the metal end and rubber end of the test piece on the
upper and lower chucks of the testing machine. STRETCH at a speed of (50 ±
5) mm/min. RECORD the damage type.
6 Inspection rules
6.1 Inspection classification
6.1.1 Exit-factory inspection
6.1.1.2 Inspection items
For the dimensional tolerances and appearance quality, CONDUCT exit-factory
inspection. For the hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break and tear
strength, CONDUCT exit-factory inspection batch by batch.
6.1.2 Type inspection
All the technical requirements for type inspection items are listed in this Part.
CONDUCT the type inspection under one of the following circumstances.
6.1.3 Periodic inspection
Under normal circumstance, CONDUCT the ozone ageing inspection at least
once a year. CONDUCT the brittle temperature inspection at least once every
six months. For the compression set, hot air ageing, rubber and metal adhesion
properties (only applicable to Type FG composite waterstops with steel edges)
and rubber and cord fabric adhesion strength (only applicable to Type JX
composite waterstops with cord fabric), CONDUCT the inspections once every
quarter.
6.2 Determination rules
6.2.1 If the dimensional tolerances, appearance quality and various physical
property indicators of rubber materials comply with the technical requirements,
the products will be determined as conforming.
7 Symbols, packaging, transportation and storage
7.1 USE appropriate materials not affecting the quality of waterstops for
packaging.
7.2 Each packaging shall have a product certificate, and shall be indicated
with product name, product marking, trademark, production license number,
manufacturing plant’s name and address, production date and product standard
number.
7.4 Under the condition of complying with the provisions of Section 7.3, the
product properties shall conform to the provisions of this Part within 12 months
since the date of production.
