— Part 2. Waterstop;
— Part 3. Hydrophilic expansion rubber;
— Part 4. Rubber gasket for shield-driven tunnel.
This Part is Part 3 of GB/T 18173.
This Part was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Part replaces GB/T 18173.3-2002 Polymer water-proof materials - Part 3.
Hydrophilic expansion rubber. Compared with GB/T 18173.3-2002, the major
technical changes are as follows.
— MODIFY the definition of the volume expansion ratio (SEE Section 3.1 of
this Part, Section 3.1 of 2002 edition).
— MODIFY the classification of the product-type hydrophilic expansion
rubber in accordance with the volume expansion ratio (SEE Section 4.1.2
of this Part, Section 3.2.2 of 2002 edition).
— ADD the product classification in accordance with the cross-sectional
shape (SEE Section 4.1.3 of this Part).
— MODIFY the product marking method. DELETE the marking method of
composite expansion rubber (SEE Section 4.2.1 of this Part, Section
3.3.1 of 2002 edition).
— MODIFY the schematic diagram for the section structure of hydrophilic
expansion rubber, and the dimensional tolerances of the product-type
hydrophilic expansion rubber (SEE Section 5.1 of this Part, Section 4.1
of 2002 edition).
— MODIFY the requirements for the appearance quality of the product-type
hydrophilic expansion rubber (SEE Section 5.2 of this Part, Section 4.2
of 2002 edition).
— ADJUST the physical property indicators of the product-type hydrophilic
expansion rubber compound (SEE Section 5.3 of this Part, Section 4.3 of
2002 edition).
Polymer water-proof materials - Part 3.
Hydrophilic expansion rubber
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 18173 specifies the terms and definitions, classification and
product markings, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, symbols,
packaging, transportation and storage for the hydrophilic expansion rubber of
polymer water-proof materials.
This Part is applicable to the hydrophilic expansion water-proof rubber made
of absorbent materials, such as water-soluble polyurethane prepolymer, sodium
acrylate polymer absorbent resin, etc., and natural or chloroprene rubber. This
kind of rubber is mainly applied to the seams and water-proof sealing of the
underground and foundation works, such as tunnels, pipe jacking, civil air
defense, etc., and the water-proof sealing of the industrial equipment, such as
vessels, locomotives, etc.
2 Normative references
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For
dated references, only the editions with the dates indicated are applicable to
this document. For undated references, only the latest editions (including all the
amendments) are applicable to this document.
GB/T 528 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of tensile
stress-strain properties

indentation hardness - Part 1. Duromerer method (Shore hardness)

pieces for physical test methods
3 Term and definition
The following term and definition are applicable to this document.
3.1 Volume expansion ratio
6.3 Physical properties
6.3.1 Test piece preparation
Standard product-type test pieces shall be prepared along the calendering
direction under the vulcanization condition equivalent to the products. CUT an
enough length of product passing the specification and appearance quality
inspections as required by the test for finished product testing. CONDUCT the
test piece preparation according to the provisions of GB/T 2941. PLACE the
test pieces at a constant temperature of (70 ± 2) °C for 8h. PLACE them in
standard status for 4h afterwards. CONDUCT the test according to the
requirements of Table 2. The putty-type test pieces are directly taken from the
products. CARRY out the test piece preparation according to the dimensions
specified in the test method.
6.3.2 Hardness
The hardness determination shall be carried out according to the provisions of
GB/T 531.1.
6.3.3 Tensile strength and elongation at break
The determination of tensile strength and elongation at break shall be carried
out according to the provisions of GB/T 528. USE Type II test pieces.
6.3.4 Volume expansion ratio
The determination of volume expansion ratio shall be carried out according to
the provisions of Annex A. After immersion, it is not allowed to use weighing
method for test piece inspection. The inspection shall be carried out according
to the provisions of Annex B.
6.3.5 Repeated water immersion test
IMMERSE test pieces in the distilled water at a room temperature of (23 ± 5) °C
for 16h. After taking them out, DRY at (70 ± 2) °C for 8h. IMMERSE test pieces
in water for 16h again. DRY for 8h afterwards... After 4 cycles of repeated water
immersion and drying, MEASURE the tensile strength and elongation at break,
and TEST the volume expansion ratio according to the provisions of Section
6.3.4.
6.3.6 Low-temperature bending
CUT test pieces into 20mm × 100mm × 2mm cuboids according to the
provisions of Annex C.
6.3.7 High-temperature flow
c) After official production, when there are major changes in structure, design,
process, materials, manufacturing equipment and management of the
products;
d) When resuming production after stopping production for more than six
months;
e) When there are major differences between the exit-factory inspection results
and the last type inspection results;
f) When the national quality supervision and inspection agency requires the
type inspection.
7.1.3 Periodic inspection
Under normal circumstance, CONDUCT the repeated water immersion test and
low-temperature bending properties inspection to the product-type hydrophilic
expansion rubber, and CONDUCT the high-temperature flow test and low-
temperature test to the putty-type hydrophilic expansion rubber once every six
months.
7.2 Determination rules
7.2.1 If the dimensional tolerances, appearance quality and various indicators
of the physical properties comply with the technical requirements, the products
will be determined as conforming.
7.2.2 If the dimensional tolerances or appearance quality does not comply
with the requirements, TAKE another 100m of the test piece for re-inspection.
If some of the re-inspection results are still unqualified, CONDUCT 100%
inspection to this batch of products. Furthermore, REJECT the non-conforming
products.
7.2.3 If any one of the indicators of physical properties fails to comply with the
technical requirements, DOUBLE the test pieces for re-inspection. If the re-
inspection results are still unqualified, DETERMINE this batch of products as
non-conforming.
8 Symbols, packaging, transportation and storage
8.1 USE plastic bags for sealed packaging of hydrophilic expansion rubber.
USE woven bags or cartons for packaging afterwards.
8.2 Each packaging shall have a product certificate, and shall be indicated
with product name, product marking, trademark, manufacturing plant’s name
and address, production date, etc.
Annex B
(Normative)
Test method II of volume expansion ratio
B.1 Test piece preparation
B.1.1 The laboratory temperature shall conform to the provisions of GB/T
2941.
B.1.2 USE a balance with a accuracy of not less than 0.001g and a 50mL
measuring cylinder as test apparatuses.
B.1.3 TAKE 2.5g of test pieces. MADE them into three cylinders with the
diameter of 12mm and the height of 12mm. REMOVE the surface layers when
using finished products as test pieces.
B.2 Test procedures
B.2.1 USE a balance with a accuracy of 0.001g to weigh the masses of the
prepared test pieces in air. WEIGH the masses of the test pieces when hanging
them in distilled water afterwards (USE hair or other particularly light filaments
to hang the test pieces).
B.2.2 ADD about 20mL of distilled water at (23 ± 5) °C in the measuring
cylinder. PUT th...
