1 Scope

This standard specifies the principle, analysis steps and results of the determination of dissolved methane (CH4) in seawater by headspace equilibrium-gas chromatography. Calculation. This standard is applicable to the determination of dissolved CH4 concentration in seawater of offshore waters and estuaries. The measurement range is 2nmol·L-1~ 500 nmol·L-1.

2 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document. 2.1 Dissolved methane dissolvedmethane The amount of CH4 gas dissolved per liter of seawater. Note. 3 Principle of the method

Based on Dalton's gas partial pressure law and Henry's law, at room temperature, a gas composed of seawater samples and gases that do not affect the measurement results are formed - The liquid-tight system is allowed to stand after shaking, so that the dissolved CH4 in seawater reaches the distribution equilibrium between the gas-liquid two phases, and then determined by gas chromatography. The concentration of CH4 in the headspace gas, and the concentration of dissolved CH4 in the seawater sample is calculated based on the gas-liquid two-phase volume.
