1 Scope

This document describes a gas chromatographic method for the determination of nicotine, propylene glycol and glycerol in e-cigarette liquids. This document applies to the determination of nicotine, propylene glycol and glycerol in e-cigarette liquid.

4 Principles

E-cigarette liquid was diluted with isopropanol solution containing internal standard, and gas chromatograph with hydrogen flame ionization detector (GC-FID) was used. At the same time, the nicotine, propylene glycol and glycerol in the diluent were determined, and the internal standard method was used for quantification.

5 Reagents and materials

5.1 Carrier gas. helium, nitrogen, high purity. 5.2 Auxiliary gas. air and hydrogen, high purity, used for hydrogen flame ionization detector. 5.3 Isopropyl alcohol. the purity should not be less than 99%. 5.4 Internal standard. 2-methylquinoline, 1,3-butanediol, the purity should not be less than 99%. In the determination of purity, it meets the requirements and is not diluted with e-cigarette liquid. In the case of simultaneous elution of other components in the release solution, n-heptadecane (CAS number. 629-78-7), n-octadecane (CAS No.. 629-78-7) can also be selected. No. 593-45-3), Anethole (CAS No. 104-46-1), Carvone (CAS No. 99-49-0), 1,4-Butanediol (CAS No. 104-46-1) 110-63-4) or other substances used as internal standards. 5.5 Internal standard solution. isopropanol solution containing mass concentration of 0.2 mg/mL 2-methylquinoline and 1.0 mg/mL 1,3-butanediol. Inside The standard solution should be stored at 2 ℃ ~ 8 ℃, the validity period is 3 months, and should be equilibrated to room temperature before use. 5.6 Nicotine. the purity should not be less than 98%. Nicotine salt of salicylic acid can also be used, and the purity should not be less than 98%. 5.7 Propylene glycol. the purity should be no less than 99% and should be stored in a desiccator. 5.8 Glycerol. The purity should not be less than 99%, and it should be stored in a desiccator. 5.9 The preparation method of the standard working solution is. dissolve nicotine (5.6), propylene glycol (5.7) and glycerol (5.8) in the internal standard solution (5.5) , prepare at least 5 standard working solutions whose concentration range should cover the concentration expected to be detected in the sample (usually the mass concentration of nicotine is 0.005mg/mL~1.5mg/mL, propylene glycol mass concentration 0.12mg/mL~10.0mg/mL, glycerol mass concentration 0.12mg/mL~ 10.0 mg/mL). The standard working solution should be stored in the dark at 2℃~8℃, and the shelf life is 3 months. It should be equilibrated to room temperature before use.
