1 Scope

This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, character, size, patterns, setting, use, maintenance, production of road traffic signs. This document applies to all kinds of road traffic signs on roads, urban roads, places under the jurisdiction of the organization but allowing social motor vehicles to pass, including squares, public parking lots and other places used for public passage.

4 General

4.1 Basic requirements 4.2 Classification 4.3 Color 4.4 Shape The shape of road traffic signs shall meet the following requirements. a) Regular octagon. Used for stop-to-give-way signs in prohibition signs; b) Inverted equilateral triangle. Used for the deceleration-to-give-way signs in the prohibition sign; c) Round. Used for prohibition signs and indication signs; d) Equilateral triangle. Used for warning signs; e) Cross. Used for the "cross symbol" warning sign; f) Rectangle. Used for guide signs, tourist attraction signs, notification signs, auxiliary signs, as well as some prohibition signs, indication signs, warning signs, etc. Note. Rectangle includes square and rectangle. 4.5 Characters 4.7 Patterns The use of graphic signs, other than those specified in this document, is a trial sign, which shall be implemented, in accordance with the procedures specified in GB 5768.1; meanwhile auxiliary signs shall be added, to explain the meaning. 4.8 Settings 4.9 Use and maintenance 4.9.1 From the date of implementation of this document, all newly installed (modified) traffic signs shall be implemented, in accordance with the provisions of this document; the traffic signs, that have been set up in accordance with the previous edition of this document, shall be gradually replaced, within their service life. 4.9.2 The setting (adjustment) of the traffic signs, for the newly constructed (modified or expanded) roads, shall be completed before the newly constructed (modified or expanded) roads are completed and opened to traffic; the signs related to the newly constructed (modified or expanded) roads, in the road network, shall also be adjust synchronously and set completely; the signs, that cannot be used any more, shall be removed. 4.9.3 When the road traffic conditions change, the setting of relevant signs shall be adjusted. 4.9.4 The road number signs and road name signs shall be used as far as possible, to enable road users to know their route and location. 4.9.5 The signs shall be cleaned and maintained regularly, to ensure visibility. Signs shall also avoid being blocked by trees; the visual recognition of signs shall not be influenced by road lighting. 4.9.6 The shape and color of the sign shall comply with the provisions of this document, during its service period. 4.9.7 The back of the sign board shall not be used for publicity or advertisement; it shall be gray, black or metallic primary color; meanwhile avoid glare. 4.9.8 When the sign is installed, the relevant information of sign management can be pasted on the back of the sign board OR on the column. The information, which is pasted on the back, shall not be colored or reflective; it can be the same color as the back of the sign board. If it is text, the height of the characters shall be so small, that it cannot be seen by the driver. 4.9.9 Unless otherwise specified, signs can be used alone OR in conjunction with markings. See Appendix D, for recommendations on the coordination of traffic signs and markings. 4.10 Fabrication 4.10.1 The patterns of road traffic signs shall be scaled up, according to the provisions of this document. See Appendix E, for an example of the fabrication of pattern of road traffic signs. 4.10.2 Combined with the layout of text or patterns, the sign board, which is installed on the support structure, can leave a gap of not more than 10 cm, as shown in Figure 9. However, it shall be noted that the gap should not be left on the text, pattern, etc. It shall avoid the visual recognition from being influenced by the backlight environment. Other measures, that are convenient for transportation and installation BUT do not affect the visual recognition of the signs, may also be adopted. Note. The two white horizontal lines, in the middle, are the gaps left, not the white borders. 4.10.3 The basic wind speed, in the design of the sign structure, shall be the maximum average wind speed of 10 min, at 10 m above the ground on the local open and flat ground, with a return period of 50 years, which shall not be less than 22 m/s. 4.10.4 Lightweight materials should be selected for the sign bottom plate and support structure; economical and applicable materials and structures should be adopted, according to local conditions. The connection, between the sign board and the column, can be selected in a variety of ways, according to the size of the board and the connection method. The connecting parts shall ensure easy installation, firm connection, flat surface. 4.11 Variable information signs 4.11.1 A variable information sign is a sign, that changes its display content, according to changes in traffic, road, weather conditions. Generally, it can be used as the display of speed control, lane control, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. Where there is no need to display variable information, according to changes in traffic, road, weather, etc., the display screen of the variable information sign shall be turned off. 4.11.2 Variable information signs shall not display information, which is not related to traffic. 4.11.3 There are various display methods for variable information signs, such as. high- brightness light-emitting diode (LED), flip-flop, etc. It can be selected, according to the functional requirements of the sign, display content, control method, environmental protection and energy saving, economy, etc. 4.11.4 The patterns, characters, shapes, etc. of the prohibition signs, indication signs, warning signs, etc., which are displayed by the variable information signs, shall comply with the provisions of this document. The fonts, height, spacing of the characters, which are displayed, are determined, according to the principles of clarity, easy to distinguish, safety. 4.11.5 The color of the LED variable information sign can be implemented, in Hexing Rd. 4.11.6 If one of the following conditions is met, it should set the variable information sign. a) Combined with the needs of road network traffic management, at suitable road segments before and after the entrance and exit of highways or urban expressways; b) Before the entrance of long tunnels and inside the tunnels; c) Before the starting segment of the tidal lane AND before the variable guidance lane enters the intersection; d) At the road segments where highways that are often congested in the direction of entering big cities; e) At road segments, which are affected by adverse weather conditions; f) At road segments, where there are other special requirements. 4.11.7 Variable information signs shall not interfere with signal lights. 4.11.8 If the variable information sign is close to the static sign, it should be set in front of the static sign AND shall not block the static sign. 4.11.9 When the ambient illumination is low at night, cloudy days, early morning, dusk, etc., the LED variable information sign shall reduce the illuminance, to avoid glare. 5 Prohibition signs 5.1 General provisions 5.1.1 The prohibition sign indicates the meaning of prohibition, restriction, corresponding release. The road users shall strictly abide by it. 5.1.2 When there are special requirements, such as time period and vehicle type, the auxiliary signs shall be used to explain. Unless otherwise specified, no patterns or text shall be added to the prohibition sign. When adding a pattern, the pattern position of the original prohibition sign remains unchanged. 5.1.3 When the prohibition signs, other than those specified in this document, need to be used, in addition to the procedures specified in GB 5768.1, it shall also follow the general principles below. a) Comply with the provisions of Chapter 4; b) The content of the sign shall be in pattern form as much as possible; the auxiliary sign shall be used to describe it, in texts; c) Prohibition signs, in text form, are white background, red circle, black text; the shape is circle or rectangle. 5.2 Stop-to-give-way sign (Prohibition 1) Indicates that the vehicle must stop completely, before entering the intersection; it can only pass, after confirming safety, as shown in Figure 10.The stop-to-give-way signs should be set up separately. The shape of the sign is a regular octagon; the color is white text on a red background. See Appendix F, for the setting of stop-to-give-way signs. The location of the stop-to-give-way sign should be close to the stop-to-give-way marking line. Where there is a crosswalk line at the intersection, the stop-to-give-way sign shall be set, in front of the crosswalk line, at 2 m ~ 3 m away from the edge of the crosswalk line; meanwhile it shall not obstruct the sight distance of the viewing triangle at the intersection. An example is as shown in Figure 11. 5.3 Deceleration-to-give-way sign (Prohibition 2) Indicates that the intersecting road has the priority to pass; vehicles shall slow down or stop, to observe the traffic situation on the intersecting road. It can only pass, after allowing the vehicles on the intersecting road to pass first and it is confirmed that it is safe, as shown in Figure 12.The deceleration-to-give-way sign should be set separately. The shape of the sign is an inverted equilateral triangle; the color is white background, red border, black characters. See Appendix F, for the setting conditions of the deceleration-to-give-way sign. Refer to Figure 13, for an example. 5.4 Give-way-to-oncoming-vehicle signs (Prohibition 3) Indicates that when vehicles meet, they shall stop and let the other vehicle go first, as shown in Figure 14.The shape of the sign is a circle; the color is a red circle on a white background, with two arrows in red and black. An example is as shown in Figure 15. In the following cases, except for the control of signal lights, it shall provide a give- way-to-oncoming-vehicle sign. a) One end of a narrow road segment, where it is difficult to pass vehicle; b) One end where the passing is restricted, in a two-way traffic roads, where only one lane can be opened for two-way traffic, due to some reason. 5.5 Passage prohibition sign (Prohibition 4) Indicates that all vehicles and pedestrians are prohibited from passing, as shown in Figure 16.It is located near the entrance of the road, where all vehicles and pedestrians are prohibited from passing. 5.6 No-entry sign (Prohibition 5) Indicates that all vehicles (including non-motor vehicles) are prohibited from entering, as shown in Figure 17.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where entry is prohibited. Its color is a white horizontal bar in the middle of a red background. The setting can be repeated as needed. The distance, between the two entry prohibition signs, is 60 m ~ 150 m, when the setting is repeated. See Figure 18, for an example. Figure 17 -- No-entry sign (Prohibition 5) Figure 18 -- Example of setting a no-entry sign at the entrance of the service area 5.7 Signs prohibiting entry of motor vehicles (Prohibition 6) Indicates that all types of motor vehicles are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 19.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where motor vehicles are prohibited from entry; see Figure 20 for an example. When there are prohibitions on time, vehicle type or other conditions, auxiliary signs shall be added to explain, as shown in Figure 5.8 Signs prohibiting large (or small) passenger car from entry (Prohibition 7, Prohibition 8) Indicates that large (or small) passenger cars are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 22 and Figure 23.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where large (or small) passenger cars are prohibited from entry. 5.9 Signs prohibiting the entry of trucks (Prohibition 9) Indicates that it is prohibited for the entry of truck (including the special operation vehicle), as shown in Figure 24.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where trucks and special operation vehicles are prohibited from entry. Where there are load- carrying mass restrictions or other restrictions, on the entry trucks and special-purpose trucks, it shall use the auxiliary signs for description. See Figure 25, for an example. 5.10 Signs prohibiting the entry of trailers and semi-trailers (Prohibition 10) 5.11 Signs prohibiting the entry of tractors (Prohibition 11) Indicates that all types of tractors are prohibited from entry, see Figure 28.It is located at the entrance of road segment, where all types of tractors are prohibited from entry. Figure 28 -- Prohibition of entry of tractor (Prohibition 11) 5.12 Signs prohibiting the entry of three-wheeled vehicles and low- speed trucks (Prohibition 12) Indicates that three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks are prohibited from entry, see Figure 29.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks are prohibited from entry. Figure 29 -- Prohibition of entry of three-wheeled vehicles and low-speed trucks (Prohibition 12) 5.13 Signs prohibiting the entry of motorcycles (Prohibition 13) Indicates that motorcycles are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 30.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where motorcycles are prohibited from entry. Figure 30 -- Prohibition of entry of motorcycles (Prohibition 13) 5.14 Signs prohibiting the entry of non-motor vehicles (Prohibition 14) Indicates that non-motor vehicles are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 31.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where non-motor vehicles are prohibited from entry. When a specific type of non-motorized vehicle is prohibited from entry, the auxiliary signs shall be used for description. Figure 31 -- Prohibition of entry of non-motor vehicles (Prohibition 14) 5.15 Signs prohibiting the entry of electric bicycles (Prohibition 15) Indicates that electric bicycles are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 32.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where electric bicycles are prohibited from entry. 5.16 Sign prohibiting the entry of animal-drawn carts (Prohibition 16) Indicates that animal-drawn carts are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 33.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where animal-drawn carts are prohibited from entry. 5.17 Sign prohibiting the entry of tricycles (Prohibition 17) Indicates that tricycles are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 34.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where tricycles are prohibited from entry. 5.18 Signs prohibiting the entry of manpower (passenger, cargo) tricycles (Prohibition 18, Prohibition 19) 5.19 Sign prohibiting the entry of rickshaw (Prohibition 20) Indicates that rickshaws are prohibited from entry, as shown in Figure 37.It is located at the entrance of the road segment, where rickshaws are prohibited from entry.
