This Part is the Part 1 of GB/T 2406. This Part is equivalent to adopt international standard ISO 4589-1:1996 "Plastics - Determination of burning behavior by oxygen index - Part 1: Guidance" (English version). This Part is equivalent to translate ISO 4589-1:1996. They are identical in the technical contents. To facilitate the use, to ISO 4589-1:1996, this Part makes the following editorial changes: - Change the "this Part of ISO 4589" to be "this Part of GB/T 2406" or "this Part"; - Delete the Foreword of ISO 4589-1:1996; - Add the Foreword of this Part of the national standard. This Part replaces GB/T 2406-1993 "Plastics – Determination of flammability by oxygen index". Compared with GB/T 2406-1993, the main differences are as follows: - Modify the standard name. Add the Foreword, Introduction and Appendix A; - On the Chapters "Scope", "Apparatus" and "Operation", the contents have been expanded and supplemented; - Add Chapters "Principle", "Applicability of the test", "Operating conditions" and "Conclusions"; - On the ISO 4589’s "Room-temperature test", "High-temperature test" and "Thin-film sample preparation methods", general introduction is made. Appendix A of this Part is informative. This Part was proposed by the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. This Part shall be centralized by the National Plastic Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC 15). The responsible drafting organization of this Part: National Quality Supervision and Inspection Center of Synthetic Resin. Participating drafting organizations of this Part: Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Resin Institute, National Plastic Products Quality Inspection Center (Fuzhou), National Chemical Building Materials Testing Center (Materials Testing Division), Jiangning District analytical instrument factory, Shanghai Fire Research Institute of Ministry of Public Security, Guangzhou Blonde Technology Co., Ltd. and Shandong Longkou Dawn Group Dawn Engineering Plastic Co., Ltd. The previous standards replaced by this Standard are: - GB 2406-1980, GB/T 2406-1993. Plastics - Determination of burning behaviour by oxygen index – Part 1: Guidance1 Scope1.1 This Part of GB/T 2406 constitutes a guidance document for the OI test. It provides information to guide the reader in the use of the test procedures described in Parts 2 and 3. 1.2 ISO 4589-2 describes a method for determining the minimum concentration of oxygen by percentage volume in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen introduced at 23 °C ± 2 °C that will just support combustion of a material under specified test conditions. The results are defined as OI values. For comparative purposes, a procedure is also provided for determining whether or not the OI value of a material lies above some specified minimum value, which is particularly important for quality control purposes. There is also a procedure for the testing of thin films between 20 µm and 100 µm thickness. 1.3 ISO 4589-3 describes methods of carrying out the same determination over a range of temperatures typically between 25 °C and 150 °C (up to 400 °C may be used). The results are defined as OI value at test temperature. ISO 4589-3 also describes a method for determining the temperature at which the OI of the small vertical test specimens is 20.9. The result is defined as the flammability temperature. ISO 4589-3 is not applicable to materials having an OI value of less than 20.9 at 23 °C.2 Normative ReferencesThe provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Part of GB/T 2406 through the reference in this Part.
