1 Scope
This Standard specifies the determination method and test report of the volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) content in ink and similar products.
This Standard is applicable to various types of ink and similar products.
2 Normative References
The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. In
terms of references with a specified date, only versions with a specified date are
applicable to this document. In terms of references without a specified date, the latest

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document.
3.1 Ink
Ink refers to a dispersion system composed of colorants, binders and auxiliary agents;
a coloring substance that is transferred to the substrate during the printing process.

3.2 Volatile Organic Compounds; VOCs
Volatile organic compounds refer to any organic compounds whose initial boiling point
is lower than or equal to 250 °C under the standard pressure of 101.3 kPa.
4 Determination Method
4.1 This Standard assumes that the volatile matters are water and organic compounds.
When the expected VOCs content (mass fraction) in the ink is greater than 5%, the
content of volatile organic compounds in the product is determined through the
difference method.
4.2 This Standard assumes that the volatile matters are water and organic compounds.
When the expected VOCs content (mass fraction) in the ink is smaller than or equal to
15%, the content of volatile organic compounds in the product is determined through
the gas chromatography. The method shall comply with Appendix B.
5 Test Report
The test report shall at least include the following content.

Determination Method of VOCs Content in Ink - Difference Method
A.1 Principle
Weigh-take a certain amount of ink; at a prescribed or agreed temperature, heat it up
to a constant weight. After deducting the moisture content, the lost mass is the content
of volatile organic compounds.
A.2 Equipment
A.2.1 Utensils. aluminum foil box 40 mm 40 mm 10 mm, or, select other suitable
utensils in accordance with the demands.
A.2.2 Blast constant-temperature oven. constant-temperature fluctuation. ± 2 °C. In
order to guarantee the safety of the test, a forced convection oven shall be selected,
and the test shall be performed under secure conditions.
Warning---in order to prevent explosion or fire, samples containing flammable
and volatile substances shall be handled with care and implemented in
accordance with GB/T 32710.10-2016.
A.3 Test Methods
A.3.1 Sampling
Sampling shall be performed in accordance with the method specified in GB/T 3186-
2006.
A.3.2 Determination of non-volatile matter content
In the oven, dry the used utensils and paper clips, then, cool them down to room
temperature. Weigh-take a utensil with paper clips, accurate to 0.1 mg. Then, with the
same precision, weigh-take and add around (1.5 ± 0.1) g (or take an appropriate mass
as required) of sample. In addition, disperse the sample as evenly as possible in the
container (in terms of high-viscosity or crust samples, a paper clip may be used to
flatten the sample in the container).
A.3.3 Determination of moisture content
In accordance with the method provide in GB/T 6283-2008, determine the moisture
content, which shall be expressed in mass fraction. Choose Karl Fischer reagents that
would not be interfered by compounds contained in the sample. If the compounds are
unknown, the method provided in B.5.2 may be used for qualitative identification.
A.3.4 Calculation
The content of non-volatile matters in the ink sample shall be calculated in accordance
with Formula (A.1).
