Diesel engines - Selective catalytic reduction (SCR)
systems - Part 1: General requirements
1 Scope
This part of JB/T 11880 specifies the technical conditions, test methods and
approval rules of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.
This part applies to SCR systems for diesel engines and vehicles. SCR systems
for other purposes can also be implemented by reference.
2 Normative references
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For
the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable
to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including
all the amendments) are applicable to this standard.

A type of catalytic reduction device that does not differ in the following main
aspects:
a) The number, structure and material of the coated carrier;
b) Type of catalytic activity (selective catalytic reduction, oxidation, three-
way ...);
c) The carrier volume, the ratio of front-end area to length;
d) The catalyst coating content;
e) Hole density;
f) Size and shape;
g) Thermal protection.
3.8
Vehicle type
Vehicles of the same category that have the same equivalent inertia
corresponding to the reference mass as well as the main characteristics of
the engine and vehicles.
3.9
Approval of a catalytic reduction system
The approval of the catalytic reduction system for one or more models or
vehicles, to limit pollutant emissions, noise levels and impact on vehicle
performance and applicable on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems.
3.10
Deteriorated catalytic reduction system
After actual vehicle aging or rapid aging treatment, the catalytic reduction
system whose engine or vehicle emission level does not exceed the
specified requirements.
3.11
Conversion efficiency

When the test engine or vehicle runs at specified working conditions, the rate

4.3 The approval applicant shall provide the following to the testing organization
responsible for approval testing:
a) Heavy-duty vehicle engines or light-duty vehicles equipped with new
original catalytic reduction systems and approved according to emission
regulations. The selected vehicle or engine shall be agreed upon by the
applicant and the testing agency in accordance with the requirements of
emission regulations. The engine or vehicle to be tested shall be in good
mechanical condition. Before the test, the heavy-duty vehicle engine has
been fit-in running for at least 40 hours; the light-duty vehicle has been in
fit-in running for at least 3000 km. The engine or vehicle shall be free from
the defects of the emission control system. The original parts that are
excessively worn or the emission control failure shall be repaired or
replaced. Before the emission test, the engine or vehicle shall be correctly
adjusted to the technical specifications specified by the manufacturer.
b) A sample of approval catalytic reduction system. The sample shall be
clearly and persistently marked with the approval applicant’s factory name,
trademark and trade name.
c) In addition, a certified catalytic reduction system sample shall be added
for use in vehicles equipped with an on-board diagnostic (OBD) system.
The sample shall be clearly and persistently marked with the applicant’s
factory name, trademark and trade name. The sample must be degraded
in accordance with 3.10.
5 Approval
5.1 If the catalytic reduction system submitted for approval in accordance with
the provisions of this part meets the requirements of Chapter 6, the approval of
the type of catalytic reduction system is permitted.
5.2 If the original catalytic reduction system used for approval is of the type
covered by Appendix A and is used for the engine or vehicle involved in the
relevant type approval documents, it shall only meet the following requirements
and no longer need to be certified according to the provisions of this part:
a) The original catalytic reduction system used for approval shall have at
least the following signs:
1) The name or trademark of the engine or vehicle manufacturer;
2) For the brand and part identification number of the original approval
catalytic reduction system, see the information listed in 5.3.
5.5 If the requesting party for type approval can prove to the type approval
management department or testing organization that the catalytic reduction
system is of the type listed in Appendix A, then the type approval certificate may
be approved, without requiring verification in accordance with the requirements
as specified in Chapter 6.
5.6 Refer to the sample form stipulated in Appendix C, to send a notice on the
type approval, approval extension or approval rejection of a certain type of
catalytic reduction system according to the provisions of this part to the
contracting parties adopting the provisions of this part .
5.7 If the approval catalytic reduction system conforms to a certain type of
catalytic reduction system certified in accordance with the provisions of this part,
the approval mark consisting of the following patterns shall be marked in the
specified position of the approval form:
a) In a circle, write the letter E and the identification number of the country
where the approval is made, which is consistent with the international
identification number1) (if required);
b) Note the standard number of this part and a dash and approval number
on the side of the abovementioned circle.
5.8 If the approval catalytic reduction system conforms to the type of catalytic
reduction system as approved according to the other standards as attached to
the agreement at the country where the approval of this part is performed, there
is no need to repeat the symbols described in 5.7. At this time, the standard
number and approval number, as well as the additional symbols of all standards
used in the approval of the country where this part of the approval is located,
shall be marked on the right side of the symbol in 5.7 along the line.
5.9 If the approval catalytic reduction system is installed under the vehicle, the
approval mark shall be durable and easy to identify.
5.10 See Appendix D for an example of the arrangement of approval marks.
6 Requirements
6.1 General requirements
6.1.1 The product mark of the catalytic reduction system shall be represented
by the following numbers and letters:

6.1.4 The approval catalytic reduction system shall be installed in the same
position of the original catalytic reduction system; it shall not change the position
of the nitrogen oxide sensor and other applicable sensors on the exhaust pipe.
6.1.5 If the original catalytic reduction system adopts thermal protection
measures, the approval catalytic reduction system shall also have equivalent
protection facilities.
6.1.6 The approval catalytic reduction system shall be durable; its design,
manufacture and installation shall be such that the vehicle can be protected
from corrosion and oxidation under the conditions of use.
6.1.7 Before the test, the approval catalytic reduction system shall be pre-
conditioned for 5 h under the condition that the inlet temperature of the sample
is 500 °C ± 25 °C, the space velocity is (40000 ± 400) h-1, or in accordance with
the provisions of Table BA.1 in GB 17691-2005 at the engine speed A and 100%
load.
6.2 Emission-related requirements
6.2.1 General
Install on engine or vehicle that meets the requirements of 4.3 a) with a catalytic
reduction system that requires approval. Compare the performance with the
original catalytic reduction system according to the following procedures.
6.2.2 Determination of comparison basis
After the engine or vehicle is equipped with a new original catalytic reduction
system [see 4.3 a)] for trial operation, the heavy-duty vehicle engine shall follow
the cold start test conditions of ESC, ETC and related WHTC 2) as specified in
GB 17691, the light-duty vehicle shall follow the type I test conditions as
specified in GB 18352.3 to perform the emission test.
6.2.3 Emission test with approval catalytic reduction system
After the original catalytic reduction system installed on the test engine or
vehicle is replaced with an approval catalytic reduction system [see 4.3 b)] for
trial operation, the heavy-duty vehicle engine shall follow the cold start test
conditions of ESC, ETC and related WHTC as specified in GB 17691, the light-
duty vehicle shall follow the type I test conditions as specified in GB 18352.3 to
perform the emission test.
6.2.4 Assessment of exhaust pollutant emissions from vehicles or engines

6.3 Requirements on noise and vehicle performance
The approval catalytic reduction system shall meet the requirements of related
noise standards such as GB 14097 or GB 1495. The maximum power of the
engine can be measured on the test bench according to the provisions of GB/T
6072.3, or the performance of the vehicle can be verified by measuring the
maximum absorbed power of the engine at the maximum power speed on the
chassis dynamometer. When the approval catalytic reduction system is
installed, under the reference atmospheric conditions of atmospheric
temperature T0 = 298 K (25 °C) and dry air pressure ps0 = 99 kPa, the actual
measured power shall not be 5% lower than when the original catalytic
reduction system installed.
6.4 Durability requirements of the bench
6.4.1 Before the durability test of the bench, under the conditions that the space
velocity is (40000 ± 400) h-1 and the molar ratio of ammonia nitrogen (NH3/NOx)
is 1, the catalytic reduction system is subject to the performance test and it
reaches:
a) When the inlet temperature is 250 °C, its conversion efficiency shall not
be less than 50% (recommended value is 60%);
b) When the inlet temperature is 450 °C, the conversion efficiency shall not
be lower than 80%.
6.4.2 For the approval catalytic reduction system for heavy-duty vehicles,
perform a 200-hour rapid aging test on the engine test bench according to Table
3. Then determine the performance of the catalytic reduction system according
to the provisions of 6.4.1; its NOx conversion efficiency shall not be lower than
the specified values of 6.4.1 a) and 6.4.1 b) by 10% (that is, not less than 45%
and 72% respectively). Then carry out ESC and ETC tests according to GB
17691; carry out WHTC cold start test according to relevant regulations. The
test is repeated 3 times; take the average value. The emission level shall meet
the emission limits as specified in Table 4 and Table 6.
6.4.3 For the approval catalytic reduction system for light-duty vehicles, first
perform a 200-hour rapid aging test on the engine test bench according to Table
3. Then determine the performance of the catalytic reduction system according
to the provisions of 6.4.1; its conversion efficiency to NOx shall not be 10%
lower than the values specified in 6.4.1 a) and 6.4.1 b) (that is, not less than
45% and 72% respectively). Then install it on the test vehicle; carry out the type
I test according to GB 18352.3. The test is repeated 3 times and take the
average value. The emission level shall meet the emission limit requirements
6.5 Requirements on compatibility of on-board diagnostics
(OBD) systems [Only for approval catalytic reduction systems
for vehicles equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD)
systems]
6.5.1 For the compatibility of the approval catalytic reduction system and the
on-board diagnostic (OBD) system, heavy-duty vehicles shall be tested in
accordance with the provisions of Appendix B in HJ 437-2008; light-duty
vehicles shall be tested in accordance with the provisions of Annex IA in GB
18352.3-2005.
6.5.2 The provisions in Annex IA of GB 18352.3-2005 and Appendix B of HJ
437-2008 on the parts other than catalytic converters are not covered by the
testing.
6.5.3 After-sales parts manufacturers can use the pretreatment and test
procedures used in prototype approval. At this time, the approval authority shall
provide the information related to the type approval specified in Appendix B
without discrimination as required, including the number and type of
pretreatment cycles, as well as the type of test cycles used by the original
equipment manufacturer for the test of on-board diagnostic (OBD) of the
catalytic reduction system.
6.5.4 In order to verify whether all other components monitored by the on-board
diagnostic (OBD) system are installed correctly and function normally, the on-
board diagnostic (OBD) system shall neither display failure codes nor store
failure codes before installing any approval catalytic reduction system. For this
reason, at the end of the test, it may follow the provisions of 6.2.2 to evaluate
the status of the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system.
6.5.5 When the vehicle is running in accordance with the requirements specified
in 6.2.3, the fault indicator shall not display a fault.
7 Type change and approval extension of approval
catalytic reduction system
Each type change of the approval catalytic reduction system shall be notified to
the administrative department that originally approved the catalytic reduction
system.
10 Production suspension
If the approval sponsor completely suspends the production of a certain type of
catalytic reduction system certified according to this part, it shall notify the
approval authority. After receiving the relevant notice, the approval authority
may refer to the form in Appendix C to notify other parties that adopt the
provisions of this part.
11 Necessary information
11.1 Each newly approved catalytic reduction system shall be accompanied by
the following information:
a) The name or trademark of the catalyst manufacturer;
b) The vehicle equipped with the approval catalytic reduction system (year
of manufacture), including the mark used to identify whether the approval
catalytic reduction system is suitable for vehicles equipped with on-board
diagnostics (OBD) system (if applicable):
c) Installed instrument (if necessary).
11.2 Information shall be provided in any of the following ways:
a) Attach a booklet to the system that has been approved;
b) Print on the outer packaging of the approved catalytic reduction system
on sale;
c) Any other applicable methods.
In short, the products distributed at the point of sale of the manufacturing plant
must provide the above information.
Appendix B
(Informative)
Type approval application materials for approval catalytic reduction
systems
The submitted drawings shall explain the listed contents in detail in appropriate
proportions; the format size is A4 or folded to this specification. If there are
photos, they shall fully show the details.
If electronic control devices are used in the system, components or independent
technical assembly, it shall provide relevant performance data.

B.1.3 The name and address of the manufacturer.
B.1.4 If it is a component or an independent technical assembly, the location
and method of adding the approval mark shall be explained.

features referred to in B.2.3.1 and B.2.3.2.
B.2.3 Description of the vehicle model to be installed with the approval catalytic
reduction system.
B.2.3.1 Numbers and/or symbols representing engine and vehicle types.
B.2.3.2 Whether the approval catalytic reduction system is required to be
compatible with the on-board diagnostic system: yes/no (cross out those that
are not applicable).
