Foreword
This Standard is modified on the basis of adopting the Japanese industrial
standard JISK 1423.1970 (1991) “Aluminum Sulfate” (Japanese version).
This Standard was redrafted in accordance with the Japanese industrial
standard JISK 1423.1970 (1991) “Aluminum Sulfate” (Japanese version).
Considering China's national conditions, when adopting JISK 1423.1970
(1991) “Aluminum Sulfate”, this Standard made some modifications. Some
technical differences have been written in the text that are marked with
vertical single lines in the margins of the clauses that they involve. See Annex
A, Annex B for those technical differences and structural differences as well
as reasons, as for reference.
This Standard replaces HG/T 2225-2001 Aluminum sulfate for industrial use.
Main technical differences between this Standard and HG/T 2225-2001.
- this Standard classified the products into two categories, each category
into solid and liquid (Clause 3 of Edition 2001, Clause 4 of this Edition);
- modified the indicators for iron content and water insoluble matter
content (Sub-clause 4.2 of Edition 2001, Sub-clause 5.2 of this Edition);
- modified the determination method for water insoluble matter
(Sub-clause 5.3 of Edition 2001, Sub-clause 6.6 of this Edition).
Annex A, Annex B of this Standard are informative.
This Standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee on Inorganic
Chemicals National Technical Committee on Chemicals of Standardization
Administration of China (SAC/TC63/SC1).

Aluminum sulfate for industrial use
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the classification requirements, test methods,
inspection rules, marks, labels, packaging, transport and storage.
This Standard is applicable to aluminum sulfate for industrial use. The
product is mainly used in papermaking, printing and dyeing, tanning and iron
powder post-treatment. It is also used for the productions of fire protection
material, timber protective agent, catalyst carrier, and for domestic sewage,
industrial wastewater treatment.

4 Classification
The aluminum sulfate for industrial use is divided into two categories, each
type of product is divided into solid and liquid.
Class I are low-iron products, mainly used for post-processing of ferrous
powder, production of high-grade paper and catalyst carrier, etc.
Class II are general industrial products, mainly used in the papermaking,
tanning, wood preservative, fire protection materials, industrial wastewater
and sewage treatment.
5 Requirements
5.1 Appearance
Class I products are solid white flakes or lumps; liquid is colorless and
transparent.
Class II products may be solid light grayish green or light-yellow flakes, blocks
or granular; liquid is light green or light yellow.
5.2 The aluminum sulfate for industrial use shall comply with the
requirements of Table 1.

6 Test method
6.1 Safety warning
Some of the reagents used in this test method are corrosive and must
be handled with care. If splashed on the skin it shall immediately wash
with water. Seek medical treatment immediately if it is serious.
6.2 General
Reagents and water used in this Standard shall, in the absence of other
requirements specified, refer to the analytical reagents and Grade 3 water
specified in GB/T 6682-2008 or of equivalent water quality. Standard titration
solution used in the test, impurity standard solution, preparation and products
shall, in the absence of other requirements specified, be prepared according
to HG/T 3696.1, HG/T 3696.2 and HG/T 3696.3.
6.3 Appearance inspection
Under natural light, use the visual method to determine the appearance.
6.4 Determination of alumina content
6.4.1 Method summary
The aluminum in the sample reacts with the disodium
ethylenediaminetetraacetate of known excess to form a complex. At a pH of
about 6, xylenol orange is used as an indicator and zinc standard titration
solution is used to titrate the excessed disodium
ethylenediaminetetraacetate.
6.4.2 Reagents
6.4.2.1 Hydrochloric acid solution. 1+1;
6.4.2.2 Sodium acetate solution. 189 g/L (prepared with anhydrous sodium
acetate);
6.4.2.3 Zinc chloride standard titration solution. c(ZnCl2) ≈ 0.025 mol/L;
6.4.2.4 Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) standard titration
solution. c(EDTA) ≈ 0.05 mol/L;
6.4.2.5 Xylenol orange indicator solution. 2 g/L.
6.4.3 Analytical steps
6.4.3.1 Preparation of testing solution
Weigh about 5 g of solid sample or about 13 g of liquid sample, to the nearest
0.0002 g. Place in a 250-mL beaker. Add into 100 mL of water or 2 mL of
hydrochloric acid solution. Heat to dissolve and boil for 5 min after boiling
(filter if necessary). After cooling, transfer all to a 500-mL flask. Use water to
dilute to scale. Well shake. This solution shall be testing solution A used for
the determinations of alumina and iron content.
6.4.3.2 Add 100 mL of water and 2 mL of hydrochloric acid solution into a
250-mL beaker. Heat and boil for 5 min after boiling. After cooling, transfer all
to a 500-mL flask. Use water to dilute to scale. Well mix.
6.4.3.3 Determination
Pipette 20 mL of testing solution A (6.4.3.1) into a 300-mL conical flask.
Pipette 20 mL of EDTA solution into it and boil for 1 min after boiling. After
cooling, add 5 mL of ...
