Industrial valves - Pressure testing
Warning: This document does not include all safety matters during the test.
Personnel using this document shall be familiar with the test procedures AND have
the responsibility to take appropriate safety and health measures and comply with
national laws and regulations, especially during high-pressure gas tests.
1 Scope
This document specifies pressure test additional conditions, pressure test requirements,
test methods, test acceptance criteria for industrial valves.
This document applies to pressure testing of metal valves.
Note: The use of this document is specified by the valve product standard.
Valves made of other materials can be implemented with reference to this standard.
2 Normative references
This document has no normative references.
3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
Shell test
Test the valve shell according to the specified test fluid and test pressure.
Note: Including the opening and closing drive mechanism, which is affected by the medium
pressure of the valve itself and connected to the internal components of the valve.
3.2
Closure test
The test on the tightness of the valve opening and closing part’s sealing pair,
according to the specified test fluid and test pressure.
3.3
Back seal test
3.9
Double block-and-bleed valve
A valve with two independent sealing pairs. When the valve is in the closed position,
the medium, which is contained in the cavity between the two sealing pairs, can be
cut off and sealed by the two sealing pairs, when the pressure in the cavity is relived.
3.10
Visually detectable leakage
During valve pressure testing, leakage through the pressure boundary and seal pair,
which can be observed by normal visual inspection.
4 Additional conditions for pressure test
4.1 Buyer inspection
Where there is a requirement, in the order contract, to witness the inspection and testing
of the valve in the manufacturing plant, the buyer's representative may enter the
manufacturing plant for inspection. The valve manufacturer shall notify the buyer's
representative 5 working days in advance OR as specified in the contract, based on the
required test items.
4.2 Witness test
If the buyer performs a pressure test on a stock valve, the stock valve may be tested,
without removing paint or coating from the shell surface.
4.3 Test selection items
When the order contract requires it, the test of the "optional" items in Table 1 can be
carried out.
5 Pressure test requirements
5.1 Safety tips
The pressure test, which is conducted in accordance with this document, requires an
assessment of the safety of the pressure test of the gas or liquid medium, which is used
for the test.
5.2 Test location
The pressure test shall be carried out in the valve manufacturer OR at a test site, as
witnessed by the valve manufacturer's personnel.
5.3 Test equipment
The pressure test equipment shall not exert external forces, that would affect the valve
test results. If an end pair clamping test device is used, the valve manufacturer shall be
able to ensure that the test device does not affect the test results of the sealing
performance of the valve being tested.
5.4 Pressure measuring equipment
The accuracy of the measuring equipment, which is used to test pressure, shall not be
lower than level 1.6; meanwhile it shall be calibrated and within the valid calibration
verification period.
5.5 Valve shell surface
5.5.1 Before the shell pressure test, it is not allowed to paint the valve surface OR use
other coatings that can prevent leakage. Pressure test is allowed, when the chemical
anti-corrosion treatment without sealing effect AND when the lining of the lining valve
exists. Lining materials or spray coatings that constitute the internal structure of the
valve, such as plastic lining, thermal spray wear-resistant coating, spray epoxy resin
coating.
5.5.2 When the buyer requires another pressure test, for valves that have been painted
or used other coatings, it may not remove the lining material or spray coating. After the
shell is anti-rust painted, it is allowed to perform pressure test, without removing the
paint.
5.6 Test fluid
5.6.1 The liquid medium can be water (rust inhibitors are allowed to be added), kerosene
or non-corrosive liquids, which have a viscosity no higher than water. When testing
valves made of austenitic stainless steel, the chloride ion content in the water used shall
not exceed 100 mg/L.
6.1.4 When testing the gas medium shell, drain the liquid in the body cavity. Seal the
inlet and outlet of the valve. Partially open the valve. Fill the valve shell with the gas
test medium. Gradually pressurize it to the test pressure specified in 5.7.1. Maintain the
test pressure, according to the requirements of Table 2. Immerse the entire valve shell
in the water, to make the upper surface of shell not more than 50 mm from the water
surface. Observe whether there are continuous bubbles escaping from the water. It may
also be observed by the method of spraying leak detection liquid on the outer surface
of the shell.
6.2 Back closure test
6.2.1 For valves with an upper sealing structure, close the inlet and outlet of the valve.
Fill the valve shell with liquid test medium. Drain the air in the valve body cavity. Use
the valve operating mechanism, to open the valve to the fully open position. Loosen the
packing gland bolts.
6.2.2 Gradually pressurize to the test pressure specified in 5.7.2. Maintain the test
pressure, according to the requirements of Table 2. Observe the leakage at the valve
stem packing.
6.3 Sealing test
6.3.1 General requirements
6.3.1.1 During the test, except for plug valves with oil seal structures, the sealing
surfaces of valves with other structures shall be clean.
6.3.1.2 For valves with two sealing pairs and a middle cavity structure in the valve body
and bonnet (such as gate valves, ball valves, plug valves, etc.), during the test, the
middle cavity shall be filled with the medium at test pressure.
6.3.1.3 Except for check valves, for valves with specified medium flow direction marks,
the test pressure shall be applied in the direction of the specified flow direction mark.
6.3.1.4 The test pressure shall be as specified in 5.7.3.
6.3.2 Closure test inspection
The test methods and inspections of the main types of valves are as specified in Table
3.
