Foreword
The Code is revised by China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation jointly
with the organizations concerned according to “Notice on the Issuance of ‘Engineering
Construction National Standard Formulation and Revision Plan in 2004’” (Jian Biao
[2004] No. 67).
Main revision contents of the Code include general provisions, explosive gas
atmosphere, classification of hazardous areas, selection of equipment, etc. The main
revisions are as follows.
1. Revision on name of the Code, i.e. CHANGE “Code for Design of Electrical
Installations in Explosive and Fire Atmospheres” TO “Code for Design of Electrical
Installations in Explosive Atmospheres”.
2. CHANGE “Glossary” TO “Terms”; MAKE some revision and including in the main
body;
3. DELETE Chapter IV “Fire Hazard”;
4. DELETE example drawing from the main body of the original Code; changing to
annex and increasing some content;
5. ADD the provisions on use of increased-safety equipment in area 1;
6. Classification of explosive dust hazardous area is changed from original two kinds
of areas of “area 10 and area 11” to three kinds of areas of “area 20, area 21 and area
22”;
7. ADD grouping of explosive dust. group III A, III B and III C;
8.MERGE “Electrical Installations in Explosive Gas Atmosphere” and “Electrical
Installations Explosive in Dust Atmosphere” INTO chapter 5 “Electrical Installations in
Explosive Atmosphere”.
9. ADD the concept of “Equipment Protection Level”;
10. ADD types of optical radiation equipment and transmission system explosion-proof
structure.
In the revision process, The Code group has conducted extensive research, seriously
summed up the experiences since implementation of the Code, used relevant national
standards and relevant standards in developed industrial countries for reference,
extensively asked for opinions of relevant units all over the country, discussed and
coordinated the major issues for many times and finalized it by review. The Code
deletes the contents on environment of fire risk in the original code, implements other
1 General provisions
1.0.1 In order to standardize the design of electrical instillations in explosive
atmosphere, make electrical installations in explosive atmosphere follow the policies
of prevention first, guarantee the personal and property safety and take preventive
measures according to circumstances, this Code is hereby developed.
1.0.2 This Code applies to the classification of explosive hazardous areas of new,
expanded and reconstructed projects where explosive hazardous environment
emerges or may emerge during production, processing, handling, transshipment and
storage process as well as design of electrical installations.
The Code dos not apply to the following environments.
1 Underground mine;
2 Environments of manufacturing, using or storing gunpowder, dynamite and
producing detonating powder, fuses, initiating explosive devices, etc.;
3 Areas of electrolysis, electroplating and other electrical installations where electric
energy is used for production and directly associated with technological process
of production;
4 Environment where strong oxidant is used or fire breaks out voluntarily without
external ignition source;
5 Water, land and air transportation means and marine and land oil well platforms;
6 Pipeline system that is used for heating, air conditioning, cooking and laundry with
flavored natural gas as fuel or similar pipeline system;
7 Inside medical room;
8 Catastrophic accidents.
1.0.3 This Code does not consider the effect of indirect harm on classification of
explosive hazardous areas and design of related electrical installations.
1.0.4 Classification of explosive hazardous areas shall be negotiated to complete
jointly by professional personnel who are in charge of production technology
processing media properties, equipment and processing properties and engineering
technical personnel who are in charge of safety and electrical engineering.
1.0.5 Besides conforming to the Code, design of electrical installations in explosive
atmosphere shall also comply with the provisions of existing related national standards.
2 Terms
2.0.1 Flash point
Minimum liquid temperature that the amount of making liquid become vapor can form
flammable gas or air mixture under standard conditions.
2.0.2 Ignition temperature
Minimum temperature that mixture of flammable gas or vapor is ignited by hot surface
under specified conditions.
2.0.3 Ambient temperature
Referring to the average maximum temperature of the hottest months over years in
designated area.
2.0.4 Flammable material
Referring to that the material itself is flammable and can produce flammable gas, vapor
or mist.
2.0.5 Flammable gas or vapor
Gas or vapor that will form an explosive gas atmosphere after mixing with air at a
certain percentage.
2.0.6 Flammable liquid
Liquid that can produce flammable vapor or mist under the foreseeable conditions of
use.
2.0.7 Flammable mist
Flammable liquid droplets that form an explosive atmosphere by volatile in the air.
2.0.8 Explosive gas mixture
Under atmospheric conditions, combustion will spread over the whole scope after
mixture of gas, vapor or mist-like flammable material and air is ignited.
2.0.9 Highly volatile liquid
Highly volatile liquid refers to the liquid that absolute vapor pressure exceeds 276 kPa
at a temperature of 37.8 °C. These liquids include butane, ethane, ethylene, propane,
propylene, liquefied natural gas, natural gas liquids and their mixture.
mixture with fresh air.
2.0.18 Normal operation
Refer to the operating conditions of equipment within the range of design parameters.
2.0.19 Dust
Small solid particles that can precipitate relying on the own weight or are suspended
in the air for some time, including fiber and flying as well as dust and fine particles
defined in current standards “Technical Requirements for Bag Filter” GB/T 6719.
2.0.20 Combustible dust
Dust, fibers or flying that can burn in the air or burn flameless and can form explosive
mixture with air in normal temperature.
2.0.21 Combustible flying
Solid particles incl...
