railways; compared with GB 146.2-1983, the main technical changes, except
editorial changes, are as follows:
-- Modify the name of the railway structure gauge to v ≤ 160 km/h passenger
and freight railway structure gauge (see Chapter 4; Chapter 4 of version
1983);
-- Modify the platform gauge height in the basic structure gauge (see Chapter
4; 4.1.1 of version 1983);
-- For tunnel gauge-1 and tunnel gauge-2, add the lower contour line of
newly-built tunnel at the lower gauge of 25 mm ~ 1 210 mm above the rail
surface (see 4.2.1, 4.2.2; 4.2.1, 4.2.2 of version 1983);
-- Delete tunnel gauge-1B, tunnel gauge 02B, bridge gauge-1B, bridge
gauge-2B (see 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.1, and 4.3.2 of version 1983);
-- Add v > 160 km/h passenger and freight railway structure gauge (see
Chapter 5);
-- Add the passenger dedicated line structure gauge (see Chapter 6);
-- Delete the reference diagram of the pantograph position of electrified
railway (see Appendix A of version 1983);
-- Delete the reference diagram of the off-gauge goods loading gauge (see
Appendix B of version 1983).
This Part shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Railway Administration

Gauge for standard gauge railways - Part 2: Structure
gauge
1 Scope
This Part of GB 146 specifies the basic structure gauge, tunnel structure gauge,
bridge structure gauge and bridge and tunnel structure gauge of 1 435 mm
standard gauge railway tracks.
This Part applies to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the
following standard gauge railway tracks:
-- v ≤ 160 km/h passenger and freight railway;
-- v > 160 km/h passenger and freight railway;
-- Passenger dedicated railway.
2 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document.
2.1 Structure gauge
The limit cross-sectional contour perpendicular to the center line of the track.
Within this contour, except for rolling stock and the equipment interacting with
rolling stock and related equipment (such as vehicle reducer, contact wire,
hanging string, locator), other equipment or structures shall not be invaded.
2.2 Design speed
The designed maximum travel speed of the train for the track.
Note: The designed speed is expressed in kilometers per hour.
3 General
3.1 Whether it is a new rail or an old rail (including the long-term replacement
of heavy rail thickened track beds), the structure gauge dimension that is
calculated from the rail surface shall meet the requirements.
3.2 The dimensions on each structure gauge drawing of this Part are based on
the track on the horizontal straight road.
3.3 The center distance of adjacent tracks in the curve part and the expanded
distance from the center line of track to the structure shall be calculated
according to the prescribed curve widening formula.
3.4 Due to the superelevation of the outer rail in the curve part, the vertical
height of the structure gauge shall be calculated from the straight line that is
formed by the highest points of the inner and outer rails; the horizontal
dimension shall be calculated from the center line of the track.
4 v≤160 km/h passenger and freight railway structure
gauge
4.1 Basic structure gauge
4.1.1 Structure gauge-1
4.1.1.1 The structure gauge-1 is the basic structure gauge of the v ≤ 160 km/h
passenger and freight railway, as shown in Figure 1.
Bridge structure gauge. The maximum height is calculated and
determined according to the height of the overhead line system
structure; the minimum shall not be less than 6 550 mm.
Basic structure gauge.
Lighting, communication, warning signals and color light signals can be
installed between the basic structure gauge and the bridge structure gauge.
Figure 6 -- Bridge gauge-2
4.3.3 Calculation of the widening amount of bridge structure gauge on the
curve
See 4.1.1.3 for the calculation method of the widening amount of bridge
structure gauge on the curve.
5 v>160 km/h passenger and freight railway structure
gauge
5.1 Basic structure gauge
5.1.1 Structure gauge-3 is the basic structure gauge of the v > 160 km/h
passenger and freight railway, as shown in Figure 7.

Structure gauge for standard gauge railways
1 Scope
This Gauge is applicable to 1435 mm standard gauge railways.
2 Definition
Structure gauge is the limit cross-sectional contour that is perpendicular to the
center line. Within this contour, in addition to railway vehicle and the device
(vehicle reducer, tablet exchanger, contact wire, etc.) that interact with the
railway vehicle, other equipment or building must not invade.
3 Instructions
3.1 Whether it uses new rail or old rail (including long-term replacement of thick
heavy rail track bed), the size of structure gauge, counting from the rail surface,
shall comply with the provisions.
3.2 The size of structure gauge figure is specified for horizontal straight-line.
3.3 The expanded distance of center distance between adjacent lines in the
curved part as well as the one from the line’s midline to the building shall be
calculated according to the specified equation.
3.4 In the curved part, due to the ultra-height of outer rail, the vertical height of
structure gauge shall be counted from the straight-line that is formed by the
highest points of the inner rail and the outer rail. The horizontal size shall be
counted from the widened line center.
3.5 The distance of adjacent line’s centerline of railway station and interval AND
the size of other secondary gauge are specified in technical design
specifications or standards of Ministry of Railways.
4 Basic size
4.1 Basic structure gauge
4.1.1 Structure gauge-1
4.1.1.1.2 Technical reformation of business railway.
a. During the construction of complex line, at least one line must comply with
structure gauge-1.
b. Railway that is designated for technical reformation by Ministry of Railways.
4.1.1.1.3 Loading gauge is 4450×5300 freight train. Cargo loading size can
refer to Appendix B. When each level of out-of-gauge freight train is running on
the single line or complex line, it shall be handled according to the transport
method for out-of-gauge cargo.
4.1.1.2 Widening method for structure gauge on curve.
Inward curve widening, mm,
Outward curve widening, mm,
Total widening of inward curve and outward curves, mm,
Where,
Ri - curve radius, m;
H – height counting from rail surface, mm;
h - ultra-height of outer rail, mm.
ଵହ·h value can be obtained by using inward rail top as axis, rotating the
relevant gauge at θ angle.
Reference table for the minimum size of catenary to rail surface at the
maximum laxity
Sequence ① Catenary installation location
Loading height of freight
train mm
4800 ③ 5300
1 In-Station 6000 ② 6000 ②
2 Interval 5500 5750
3 Over bridge in-station or near-station, under overpass 5500 5700
4 Within bridge structure gauge and tunnel structure gauge 5200 5700
Note.
① Catenary voltage is 25~35 KV.
② The maximum hanging height from rail surface of catenary is 6500 mm. For operators
without shunting in small station, the hanging height of intracontinental catenary is same
with the one of interval’s.
③ The basic loading height of freight train when this railway gauge is not applicable, for
electrification railways.
