Foreword
This Standard was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaced GB/T 8942-2002 Paper – Determination of Softness.
Compared with GB/T 8942-2002, this Standard has the major changes as follows.
--- Increase the principle of softness measurement;
--- Add the description of the sample placement when measuring the softness in the
longitudinal and lateral directions; and the converting method and examples of
the softness when the sample size is less than 100mm×100mm;
--- Adjust the length of the plate-shaped probe from the original 240mm to no less
than 120.0mm;
--- Delete the terms of softness;
--- Delete the Appendix A.

Paper – Determination of Softness
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the method of using the hand-feeling softness tester to
determine the softness of paper.
This Standard is applicable to various wrinkle toilet paper, tissue paper and its
derivatives, as well as other papers that require softness.
2 Normative References
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the
dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this
document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the
amendments) are applicable to this document.

3 Principle
Under the specified conditions, when the plate-shaped probe presses the sample
into the slit to a certain depth (about 8mm), the instrument records the sum BETWEEN
bending resistance force of the sample itself AND the maximum vector of the friction
force of sample and the slit, which is called the softness of the sample; the smaller the
instrument indication value is, the softer the sample.
4 Apparatus
4.1 Instrument structure
The structural schematic diagram of the hand-feeling softness tester can refer to Figure
1.
4.2 Instrument parameters
4.2.1 Slit width
The slit width of the instrument shall be divided into 4 grades of 5.00mm, 6.35mm,
10.00mm, and 20.00mm; the width deviation shall not exceed ±0.05mm.
4.2.2 Size of the plate-shaped probe
Length is no less than 120.0mm; thickness is 2.0mm; while the radium of measuring
orifice arc is 1.0mm.
4.2.3 Average running speed and total stroke of the probe
The probe’s average running speed is (1.2±0.24) mm/s; while the total stroke is
(12±0.5) mm.
4.2.4 Pressing depth of the sample
Pressing depth of the sample is 8.0 +0.5 0 mm.
4.3 Instrument indication value error
The instrument indication value error shall be ±1.0%.
4.4 Instrument indication value repeatability
The instrument indication value repeatability shall be no greater than 1.0%.
4.5 Precautions
The instrument shall be installed on the flat and stable bench.
5 Sample Preparation
5.1 The sample shall be taken as per GB/T 450; it shall be subjected to the temperature
and humidity treatment as per GB/T 10739.
5.2 According to the actual number of layers of the product, cut the sample into the
size of 100mm×100mm. If the sample size is less than 100mm×100mm, try to cut he
maximum size; the size deviation shall not exceed ±0.5mm.
6 Test Procedures
6.1 Start and preheat the instrument; then calibrate the instrument as per the
instrument manual.
6.2 Place the sample on the middle of the test bench; and make it as symmetrical as
possible to the slit.
6.3 Test the remaining samples as per 6.2; separately test 10 effective data in the
longitudinal and lateral directions. The samples shall be tests 5 facing up and 5 facing
down in each direction.
7 Calculation of Results
The results shall be expressed by the arithmetic mean of the test results in the
longitudinal and lateral directions, in millinewtons, and rounded off to integers.
