Foreword
This Standard replaces GB13432—2004 "General Standard for the Labeling of
Pre-packaged Food of Special Diet".
Compared with GB13432—2004, the major changes of this Standard are as
follow.
— MODIFY the Standard name;
— MODIFY the definition of foods for special dietary uses, and DEFINE
the food classifications contained in this Standard (scope);
— MODIFY the basic requirements;
— MODIFY the part of mandatory labeling requirements;
— COMBINE the allowed labeling
information with recommended labeling contents, which is modified as
the optional labeling information;
— MODIFY the content claim requirements of energy and nutrients;
— DELETE the comparative claims of energy and nutrients;
— MODIFY the language of functional claims of energy and nutrients;
— DELETE Appendix A of pervious Standard;
— ADD Appendix A -- Classification of food for special dietary use.

Food Labeling of Prepackaged Special Diet
1 Scope
This Standard applies to food labeling of prepackaged special diet (including
nutrition labeling).
2 Terms and Definition
Those defined in GB7718 and the following terms and definitions apply to this
Standard.
2.1 Food of Special Diet
The food which is processed or formulated to meet special physical or
physiological condition and (or) to meet the special dietary needs of state of
diseases or disorders.
2.2 Nutrients
The substances in food, with specific physiological effects, which can maintain
the body's growth; development; activity; reproduction and normal metabolic
needs, including protein; fat; carbohydrates; minerals and vitamins.
2.3 Nutrient Components
The nutrients in food and other food ingredients with nutrients
(or) physiological functions.
3 Basic Requirements
The labels of pre-packaged foods for special dietary uses shall comply with the
content of the provisions of basic requirements of GB7718, and shall also
comply with the following requirements.
4 Mandatory Labeling Content
4.1 Basic Requirements
The labeling content of labels of pre-packaged foods for special dietary uses
shall comply with the provisions of relevant items of GB7718.
4.2 Name of Food
Only the food meeting the definition of 2.1 can use the name of "Food of
special diet" or relevant name to describe the product speciality.
4.3 Labeling of Energy and Nutrients
4.3.1 Shall LABEL energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium in form of
"box table"; and other nutrients and contents required by the appropriate
product standards. Box can be in any size; shall be perpendicular to packaging
baseline; and table title shall be “nutrient component table”. If the product adds
optional ingredients or reinforcing certain substances, according to relevant
regulations or standards, it shall also label these ingredients and their
contents.
4.4 Edible Methods and the Applicable People
4.4.1 Shall LABEL edible methods and daily or meal consumption of the
pre-packaged foods for special dietary uses, when necessary shall LABEL
deployment method or reconstitution method.
4.4.2 Shall LABEL suitable people of pre-packaged foods for special dietary
uses. For infant formula food of special medical purposes and formula food of
special medical purposes [non-infant], the applicable people shall be labeled
according to the requirements of product standards.
4.5 Storage Condition
4.5.1 Shall MARK storage condition of the pre-packaged foods for special
dietary uses in labels, when necessary, shall MARK storage condition after
opening.
4.6 Exemption from Labeling Content
When the largest surface area of the pre-packaged foods for special dietary
uses of packaging or containers is less than 10 cm2, it may only label the
product name, net weight, the name and address of manufacturer (or
distributor), date of production and shelf life.
5 Optional Labeling Contents
5.1 Energy and Nutrients Account for the Mass Percentage of the
Recommended Intake or Adequate Intake
At the same time of labeling the energy value and nutrient content, according
to applicable people, LABEL every 100g (gram) and (or) per 100 mL (milliliter)
and (or) energy and nutrient content of each food accounting for the mass
percentage of the recommended intake (RNI) or adequate intake (AI) of
"Dietary Nutrient Reference Intakes of Chinese Residences".
5.2 Energy and Nutrient Content Claims
5.2.1 When energy or nutrients in the content of the product reaches the
minimum value of appropriate product standards or the minimum amount of
permissible reinforcement, it may make content claims.
5.3 Functional Claims of Energy and Nutrients
5.3.1 The pre-packaged foods for special dietary uses complying with the
requirements of content claims can make functional claims to energy and
nutrient components. Terms of functional claims shall use the standard terms
of functional claims as specified in GB 28050.
