This standard applies to compacted strand steel wire ropes (hereinafter referred to as
"wire ropes") for equipment such as mine hoisting, blast furnace hoisting, large casting,
oil drilling, large hoisting, ships, offshore facilities, aerial ropeways, construction
machinery, lifting machinery.

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 8706, as well as the following terms and
definitions, apply to this document.
3.1
Compacted strand
The strand where the shape and size of the steel wire are changed after deformation
processing such as die drawing, rolling or forging, while the metal cross-sectional
area of the steel wire remains basically unchanged.
Note. Cited from GB/T 8706-2017.
3.2
Rope lay length
The distance -- between the corresponding two points of the outer strand of the steel
rope that rotates one circle (or one spiral) around the axis of the steel rope and is
parallel to the axis of the steel rope (see Figure 1).
3.3
Lay direction of rope
The direction in which the outer strands are laid along the axis of the wire rope, i.e.
right-hand lay (Z) or left-hand lay (S) (see Figure 2).
3.5
Lang lay (zZ sS)
A lay method in which the lay direction of the steel wire in the outer strand is the
same as the lay direction of the outer strand in the wire rope (see Figure 4).
4 Classification and marking
4.1 Classification
Wire ropes are classified according to the principles of GB/T 8706 and are divided into
single-layer strand wire ropes, anti-rotation wire ropes, parallel-lay compact wire ropes,
as shown in Table 1.
4.2 Marking
Wire ropes are marked in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 8706.
See Figure 5 for an example of wire rope marking.
5 Ordering content
The contract for ordering according to this standard shall include the following main
contents.
6 Materials
6.1 Steel wire for rope making
6.1.1 Steel wire for rope making (including center wire, filling wire, steel core wire)
shall comply with the provisions of important uses in YB/T 5343.The coating weight
shall comply with the provisions of general uses in YB/T 5343.The surface state and
nominal tensile strength grade of steel wire shall comply with the provisions of Table
2.
6.1.2 The tensile strength grade range of steel wire for rope making shall comply with
the provisions of Table 3.All steel wires of the same diameter in the same wire layer
shall have the same tensile strength grade and coating grade.
6.2 Rope core
The steel wire rope core shall be one of the following types, usually a fiber core or a
steel core;
a) Fiber core. Made of natural fiber (NFC) sisal or synthetic fiber (SFC) and other
7 Technical requirements
7.1 Lay of strands
The steel wires in the strands shall be laid evenly and tightly; it shall not have
manufacturing defects specified in GB/T 21965.
7.2 Lay of wire ropes
7.2.1 The wire rope shall be laid evenly, tightly and not loose (except for anti-rotation
wire ropes, parallel-lay wire ropes, wire ropes with a nominal diameter greater than 80
mm); the wire rope shall not be wavy when unfolded and unloaded.
7.3 Wire joints
The number of joints of the wires in the wire rope shall be minimized. When the wires
in the wire rope need to be jointed, butt welding shall be used (steel wires with a
nominal diameter of less than 0.5 mm are allowed to be spliced).
7.5 Surface quality of wire rope
The surface of the wire rope shall not have manufacturing defects in GB/T 21965.
7.7 Grade of wire rope
The grade of wire rope shall comply with the provisions of Appendix A. Other grades
of wire rope that meet the requirements may also be used, after consultation between
the supplier and the buyer.
7.8 Surface state of wire rope
The surface state of the wire rope may be smooth or coated. Steel wire ropes made of
coated steel wires can use Grade A, Grade AB, Grade B coated steel wires in YB/T
5343; however, the coating levels of steel wires of the same diameter in the same layer
shall be the same. All steel wires in the coated steel wire rope shall be coated. The
coating level of the steel wire rope is determined by the coating level of the outer steel
wire in the outer strand.
7.10 Nominal diameter
The nominal diameter is the nominal diameter of the wire rope and shall be determined
by the supplier and the buyer when signing the contract. The nominal diameters of the
wire ropes listed in Appendix A are typical nominal diameters. The nominal diameters
of the wire ropes not listed are agreed upon by the supplier and the buyer and are
implemented in accordance with this standard.
8 Test method
8.1 Diameter
8.1.1 The diameter of the steel wire rope shall be measured with a vernier caliper with
wide jaws. The width of the jaws shall be sufficient to span two adjacent strands, see
Figure 6.
8.1.2 The ratio -- of the difference between the maximum diameter and the minimum
diameter on the same section of the wire rope TO the nominal diameter -- is the out-of-
roundness, which shall comply with the provisions of 7.11.
8.2 Length
The length of the wire rope shall be measured under no-load conditions. When a special
method is required to measure the length, the measurement method shall be determined
by negotiation between the supplier and the buyer. The length of the wire rope shall be
measured in meters.
8.3 Weight
The total weight of the wire rope includes the weight of the wire rope, reel, and
packaging material, which shall be measured by a scale and expressed in kg.
8.4 Rope core of the wire rope
The compliance of the rope core shall be verified visually.
8.5 Greasing of wire rope
Verify the compliance of greasing by visual inspection.
8.8 Surface quality of wire rope

nominal diameter, the same rope grade, the same lay type, the same surface condition.
9.1.2 Method 2 - Testing one by one
9.1.2.1 Samples of wire ropes are taken one by one for partial strand split test. The
number of wire ropes for partial strand split test shall be as specified in Table 11.If the
purchaser requires 100% strand split test, it shall be stated in the contract.
9.1.2.2 Coated wire ropes shall also be tested for wire coating weight. The number of
9.1.3 The choice of the above two inspection methods shall be selected by negotiation
between the supplier and the buyer. If not specified in the order contract, it shall be
decided by the supplier.
9.2 Performance assessment of wire ropes
9.2.1 According to the breaking tensile force or the total breaking tensile force of the

When the supplier and the buyer have disputes over the test results, arbitration tests
shall be conducted at a testing agency recognized by both parties with wire rope
inspection qualifications. The arbitration test shall be in accordance with 9.1.1 of this
standard and the order contract. If the test results meet the standard requirements, the
wire rope is considered qualified.
9.5 Numerical rounding and judgment
Numerical rounding and judgment shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions
of YB/T 081.
