Foreword

This Standard is same as national standard GB 5938-1986 Corrosion-Resistant Testing Method of the Metal Deposits and Conversion Coatings for the Light Industry Products – Natural Salt Spraying Test (NSS), of which the standard number was transferred into GB/T 3826-1999 through the publication of GQX (1999) No.112 Document; while the content of which remained unchanged. This Standard was proposed by the Industry Management Division of State Bureau of Light Industry. This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Center for Standardization of Daily Hardware. Drafting organizations of this Standard. Shanghai Research Institute of Daily Hardware Industry, and Shanghai Light Industry Research Institute. Chief drafting staffs of this Standard. He Changlin, Zhang Fulin, Dong Zicheng, and Jiang Haizhu. Corrosion-Resistant Testing Method of the Metal Deposits and Conversion Coatings for the Light Industry Products – Natural Salt Spraying Test (NSS) This Standard is applicable to inspect the corrosion-resistant performance of metal deposits and conversion coatings. This Standard refers to ISO 3768-1976 Metal Coatings - Natural Salt Spraying Test (NSS Test).

1 Equipment

1.1 The test equipment consists of salt spray chamber, saltwater container, compressed air supplying (including purifying) system, nozzle, sample frame, heating and other necessary controlled manners. If the obtained conditions can satisfy the requirements of this Method, the dimension and structure of the equipment shall not be confined. 1.2 The structural materials of the test equipment shall not only influence the corrosion performance of the salt mist; but also is corrosion-resistant. 1.3 No condensed droplets on the top of the salt spray chamber are allowed to drop onto the sample. 1.4 Baffle is equipped in the salt spray chamber, which prevent the salt mist to jet onto the sample. 1.5 Minimum two collectors used for cleaning are placed in the exposed area of the salt spray chamber. One collector is close to the nozzle; while the other shall be placed at the farthest place away from the nozzle. The placing positions of the collectors are required in condition that only salt mist rather than the liquid dropped from the sample or chamber shall be collected. A suitable collector indicates the 10cm-dimameter funnel or crystal cup inserting into the graduate flask; while the collecting area is 80cm2. 1.6 If the equipment has been tested by a different solution not stipulated in this test, it must be adequately cleaned before use.

2 Test Solution

2.1 Dissolve 50±5 g of chemically pure sodium chloride in the distilled water, and form 1 liter of solution. 2.2 The pH value of the solution can be adjusted by chemically pure hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide within the range of 6~7; measure it by pH meter. Precise pH test paper through calibration can also be used for the routine inspection; to remove the dissolved carbon dioxide in water, firstly boil the distilled water for 30s during the preparation period; use after cooling off. 2.3 In order to remove any substance that clogs the nozzle of the spray equipment, the solution must be filtered before storing into the reservoir. 2.4 The solution dropped from the specimen can’t be used as salt mist as more.

3 Test Conditions

3.1 The temperature within the chamber shall be 35±2°C; the humidity is greater than 95%. 3.2 Precipitation amount of salt mist shall be judged as per the average value for 8h continuous spraying; it shall be 1~2 mL/80cm2•h.

4 Test Methods

4.1 Salt spray mode. continuous salt spray, which shall not be interrupted within the specified test time. 4.2 Salt spray cycle. calculated as per hour; the specific requirements depend on the demands of the products; it is stipulated to be 2h, 4h, 6h, 8h, 12h, 18h, 24h, 30h, 36h, 42h, 48h, 72h, 96h, 120h, and etc. 4.4 The specimen surface shall not be damaged during the testing period, check and record any observable changes; the required chamber-opening time shall be as short as possible.

5 Specimen

5.1 Specimen preparation. the specimen must be adequately cleaned. The applied cleaning method depends on the specimen surface conditions and the nature of the contamination; for instance, the ethanol, acetone, and etc.; however, any grinding materials and solvents that may erode the specimen surface are forbidden to be used. Pay attention not to touch the specimen after cleaning, so that avoid being contaminated any more. 5.3 Precautions during the testing period. specimens shall not touch each other; neither shall contact with other metal, water absorbent materials, or chamber wall; the specimen shall keep 50mm away from the chamber wall. 5.4 The specimen cutting edges or placed making marks on the specimen shall take corrosion-resistant coatings (such as paint, paraffin or adhesive tapes, and etc.) with appropriate materials. 5.5 Only when the temperature in the chamber reaches the test temperature, can the specimen be put into.

6 Specimen Cleaning and Inspection

After the completion of the test, carefully take out the specimen from the salt spray chamber; gently wash with flowing cold water (lower than 35°C) or use sponge to remove the salt deposits from the specimen surface; after that immediately dry for 30 min at 80~100°C (if it can be determined without drying, expect for the inspector); and timely inspect the corrosion degree and other defects. Most of the routine test records need consider the following aspects.

7 Assessment of Test Results

7.1 The corrosion degree of metal deposits and conversion coatings after the salt spraying test shall be assessed as per the provisions of GB 5944-86 Evaluation of the Corrosion Test Results of the Metal Deposits for the Light Industrial Products.

8 Test Report

8.1 The contents of the test report are mainly required as follows. 8.2 Test report must report the results as per the stipulated assessment standard.
