Foreword
This Document was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2020 Directives for
Standardization – Part 1: Rules for the Structure and Drafting of Standardizing Documents.
This Document is Part 6 of NB/T 47018 Technical Permission of Welding Materials for
Pressure Equipment. NB/T 47018 consists of the following parts:

This Document replaced NB/T 47018.6-2011 Technical Permission of Welding Materials for
Pressure Equipment - Part 6: Bare Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Welding Electrodes and
Rods. Compared with NB/T 47018.6-2011, the major technical changes of this Document are
as follows besides the structural adjustments and editorial modifications:
a) Deleted the relevant contents on model classification and model compilation method (see
Clause 3 of the 2011 Edition);
b) Modify the model representation method of aluminum welding wire and filler wire
according to GB/T 10858; delete the uncommon aluminum alloy welding wires SA14009,
SA14011, SA14010, SA14145, SA14643, SA15654; and add SA15087 (see Table 1 of
this Edition; Table 1 of the 2011 Edition);
c) Delete the table of chemical composition requirements for aluminum welding wire and
filler wire; and implemented it according to GB/T 10858 (see 3.2.1 of this Edition; 4.2.1
and Table 2 of the 2011 Edition);
d) Add barreled welding wire and specific requirements (see 3.3.2 of this Edition);
e) Add relaxation diameter and warpage and specific inspection requirements (see 3.5 of this
Edition);
f) Change the designation of the parent materials used for the test (see Table 3 of this Edition;

1 Scope
This Document specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules and product
identification of aluminum and aluminum alloy welding wires and filler wires.
This Document is applicable to aluminum and aluminum alloy welding wires and filler wires
for gas welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding and plasma arc welding of
pressure equipment.

through reference in this Document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates
indicated are applicable to this Document; for the undated documents, only the latest version
(including all the amendments) is applicable to this Document.

3 Technical Requirements
3.1 General requirements
Aluminum and aluminum alloy welding wires and filler wires for pressure equipment shall, in
addition to complying with the provisions of GB/T 10858, also comply with the provisions of
NB/T 47018.1 and this Document.
3.2 Inspection items and requirements
3.2.1 The physical and chemical inspection items of welding wire and filler wire shall be carried
out in accordance with the provisions of Table 1.
3.2.2 The chemical composition of welding wire and filler wire shall comply with the
provisions of GB/T 10858.
3.2.3 The radiographic test of welding wire deposited metal shall be carried out in accordance
with NB/T 47013.2-2015. The technical level of radiographic test shall be no lower than Level-
AB, and the quality level shall be Level-I.
3.2.4 The filler wire shall be inspected for flat plate overlaying weld bead, requiring good
molten pool fluidity and no spatter. The weld bead shape is regular, the width and height are
uniform, the surface is smooth, and there are no cracks or pores.
3.2.5 The deposited metal of welding wire and the overlaying weld metal of filler wire shall be
subjected to bending test. After the bending specimen is bent to the specified angle, there shall
be no single opening defect with a length greater than 3 mm in any direction in the deposited
metal on the tensile surface. The corner opening defect of the deposited metal of the specimen
can be ignored; but the length of the corner opening defect caused by un-fusion, inclusions or
other internal defects shall be included.
3.3 Surface quality and uniformity of welding wire and filler wire
3.3.1 The surface of welding wire and filler wire shall be bright and smooth. It can be observed
visually and with a 20× magnifying glass. There shall be no burrs, pits, scratches, oxide scale,
cracks, folds or inclusions. The welding wire shall not have knots, waves, bends and other
defects that affect continuous wire feeding. There shall be no obvious difference in the color of
the welding wire; and it should be performed polishing treatment.
3.3.2 Coiled welding wire and barreled welding wire shall be continuous. The coiled welding
wire layer shall be well-wound, neatly and tightly arranged, without pressed wire, without wire
clamping, and without joints on the surface. The barreled welding wire manufacturer shall
match the appropriate auxiliary wire feeding device. All welding wires shall be able to ensure

NB/T 47018-2011 "Technical Permission of Welding Materials for Pressure
Equipment” is divided into 2 Sections [Translator note: should be 7 Sections]:
- Section 6: Bare Aluminum and Aluminum-alloy Welding Electrodes and
Rods;
- Section 7: Titanium and Titanium-alloy Welding Electrodes and Rods.
This is the Section 6 of NB/T 47018.

Pressure Equipment - Section 6: Bare Aluminum and
Aluminum-Alloy Welding Electrodes and Rods
1 Scope
This Section of NB/T 47018 specifies the model preparation, technical
requirements, test methods and inspection rules of bare aluminum and
aluminum-alloy welding electrodes and rods.
This Section is applicable to the bare aluminum and aluminum-alloy welding
electrodes and rods used for the gas welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas
metal arc welding and plasma arc welding of pressure equipment.

3 Model
3.1 Model division
The model of welding electrodes and rods is divided according to the chemical
composition and use occasions.
4.2.2 The deposited metal radiographic testing for welding electrodes shall be
carried out according to JB/T 4730.2; the radiographic testing technology shall
not be lower than Grade AB and the quality grade of deposited metal is Grade
I.
4.2.3 Flat piled weld inspection shall be carried out for rods; the weld pool
shall be in good flowability and free from splash; the weld bead shape shall be
regular and uniform in width and height; the surface shall be smooth and free
from crack and pore.
4.2.4 Bend test shall be carried out for the deposited metal of welding
electrodes as well as the piled metal of rods. Where the bending sample is
bended to the specified angle, the deposited metal on its stretching plane shall
be free from opening defect with single length longer than 3mm in any direction;
the opening defect on the corner angle of deposited metal on sample shall be
ignored. However, the length of opening defect on corner angle caused by the
incomplete fusion, slag inclusion or other internal imperfection shall be counted.
4.3 Surface quality and uniformity of welding electrodes and rods
4.3.1 The surface of welding electrodes and rods shall be lustrous, smooth
and free from burr, pit, scratch, oxide skin, crack, fold and inclusion. Polished
finish should be carried out.
4.3.2 The reeled welding electrodes shall be continuous and shall ensure the
uniform and continuous feeding for equipment of machine welding, semi-
automatic welding and automatic welding.
4.4 Welding electrodes in accordance with the inspection requirements may
be used as rods without flat deposited weld inspection; the welding electrodes
in accordance with the inspection requirements may only be used as welding
electrodes after passing the deposited metal radiographic testing.
5 Test Methods and Inspection Rules
5.1 Chemical analysis
5.1.1 The chemical composition analysis of welding electrodes and rods shall
be carried out according to batches.
5.1.2 The chemical composition of electrodes or rods in each batch shall meet
the requirements of Table 2. Where other element is found during routine
analysis, further analysis shall be carried out to determine whether its gross
amount exceeds the value specified in Table 2.

5.2.4 Where there is no agreement reached between the parties, the gas
metal arc welding used for test piece shall be carried out according to the
welding process documents provided by the welding material manufacturer.
5.2.5 During the initial welding and welding, the temperature of test piece shall
not be lower than 16℃ while the arcing and inter-pass temperature shall not be
greater than 60℃.
5.3 Flat piled weld inspection for rods
5.3.1 The rods shall be inspected according to batches.
5.3.2 See Table 3 for the base material used in test. As for the dimension of
test piece, the width shall be greater than or equal to 150mm, the length shall
be greater than or equal to 300mm, and the thickness shall meet the
requirements of Article 5.2.3.
5.3.3 Argon tungsten-arc welding shall be adopted for test piece and the AC
power supply shall be weld in flat welding position. Where there is no
agreement reached between the parties, such welding shall be carried out
according to the welding process documents provided by the welding material
manufacturer.
5.3.4 The adopted rods which pass the argon tungsten-arc welding inspection
are also applicable to gas welding and plasma arc welding.
5.4 Bend test
5.4.1 Bend test shall be carried out for welding electrodes and rods according
to batches.
5.4.2 Longitudinal bending sample shall be taken from test pieces of
deposited metal radiographic testing or flat piled weld inspection for rods at the
positions as shown in Figure 2. 1 face-bend sample and 1 back-bend sample
shall be taken from the test piece of deposited metal radiographic testing while
2 face-bend samples shall be taken from the test piece of flat piled welding.
5.4.3 Longitudinal bending sample
5.4.3.1 Cold processing method shall be adopted for sampling. Where hot
processing method is adopted for sampling, the heat affected zone shall be
removed.
5.4.3.2 Welding defect and imperfection may be avoided during sample
preparation.
5.4.3.3 Sample processing:
a) the excess weld metal and base plates shall be removed through cold
processing method;
b) the stretching plane of the sample shall be processed flush and free from
scratch and damage.
5.4.3.4 Sample form:
a) see Figure 3 for the longitudinal bending sample.
