Foreword

This Standard identically adopts ISO 1520.2006 "Paints and varnishes -- Cupping test" (English version). This Standard replaces GB/T 9753-1988 "Paints and varnishes -- Cupping test". The main technical differences between this Standard and the previous version GB/T 9753-1988 are. - The previous version is equivalent to ISO 1520.1973; - Added precision data; - Improved the evaluation accuracy of the results. This document was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. This document shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on Paints and Pigments of Standardization Administration of China. The drafting organizations of this document. China National Chemical Engineering Corporation Changzhou Coatings Chemical Research Institute. Main drafters of this document. Chen Gang. This Standard was first issued in 1988.This is the first revision. 1 Scope

This Standard specifies an empirical test procedure to evaluate the resistance of coatings of paints, varnishes and related products to cracking or separation from the metal substrate after gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions. This Standard is applicable to single coating or composite coating system. For composite coating system, each coating can be tested separately or the whole system can be tested. The test method may be as follows. - Test to specified indentation depth and assess "pass/fail" based on compliance with specific requirements; - The indentation depth is gradually increased to determine the minimum depth at which the coating just begins to crack or separate from the substrate.
