Test Method for Granular Activated Carbon from Coal -
Determination of Hardness
1 Scope
This Part specifies the contents such as determination principle, determination
procedure and result calculation of the granular activated carbon from coal.
This Part is applicable to the determination of hardness of granular activated carbon
from coal (hereinafter referred to as activated carbon).
2 Principle
Under specified conditions, the sample is placed in a roller with a number of stainless

conditions of the particle size of worn sample. Use the percentage OF the sample
mass retained on the test sieve TO the original sample mass AS the sample
hardness.

Foreword
This Standard is a revision of GB 7702.3-87 based on the American Society for Testing
and Materials standard ASTM D 3802-79 (certified in 1994) "Standard Test Method for
Ball-Pan Hardness of Activated Carbon". The main technical contents are equivalent to
the standard contents of ASTM D 3802-79 (certified in 1994). The strength
determination method is changed from the ball milling method of GB 7702.3-87 to the
ball-disk method of this Standard.
After the release and implementation of this Standard, it will be used in conjunction
with the national standard "Granular activated carbon from coal" (GB/T
7701.1~7701.7-1997).
This Standard will replace GB 7702.3-87 from the date of entry into force. The
transition period for the implementation of this Standard is one year.
This Standard was proposed by China North Industries Group Corporation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of China Ordnance Industry
Standardization Institute.
The drafting organizations of this Standard: Shanxi Xinhua Chemical Plant.
Main drafters of this Standard: Wang Yueyi, Zhang Xu, Zhang Zhongjie, Wang
JIanguang, Zhang Lirong, Yuan Zhi.
This Standard was first published in April 1987.
Shanxi Xinhua Chemical Plant is entrusted with the interpretation of this Standard.
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the instruments required for the determination of the strength
of granular activated carbon from coal, the determination steps, and the processing of
the determination results.
This Standard applies to the determination of the strength of granular activated carbon
from coal (hereinafter referred to as activated carbon).
2 Normative references
The provisions contained in the following standards constitute the provisions of this
Standard through reference in this Standard. When this Standard is published, the
versions shown are valid. All standards will be revised, and the parties using this
Standard should explore the possibility of using the latest versions of the following
standards.
GB/T 7702.1-1997, Standard test method for granular activated carbon from coal.
Determination of moisture content
3 Method summary
The specimen is placed in a special plate with a certain number of stainless-steel balls
and subjected to a combination of timed rotation and beating. During the movement,
the skeleton and surface of the activated carbon are destroyed at the same time. The
particle size change of the destroyed activated carbon is measured. The percentage of
the specimen retained on the strength test sieve is used as the strength of the specimen.
4 Instruments and devices
4.1 Vibrating screen machine: speed 280~320 r/min; knocking 140~160 beats/min.
Standard test method for granular
activated carbon from coal --
Determination of hardness
Replacing GB 7702.3-87
6 Determination steps
6.1 Take 200 mL of the specimen and place it in an electric constant temperature drying
oven. Dry it at (150 ± 5)°C for 2 h. If the moisture content is less than 1%, drying is not
necessary.
6.2 Sieve for 60 s on a vibrating sieve using the same bottom sieve used to determine
the particle size of the product. Remove dust.
6.3 Use a measuring cylinder to take 100 mL of the screened specimen. Weigh its mass
on a balance to an accuracy of 0.1 g.
6.4 Pour the weighed specimen into the strength test pan and then add the steel balls.
6.5 Fix the strength test pan to the sieve vibrator.
6.6 Start the sieve vibrator. Simultaneously start the timer (or stopwatch). Vibrate the
sieve for 30 min.
6.7 Stop vibrating the sieve. Remove the steel ball from the strength test pan.
6.8 Place the required strength test sieve (see Table 1) on the sieve vibrator chassis.
Transfer the specimen in the strength test pan into the sieve. Fix it to the sieve vibrator.
6.9 Start the sieve vibrator and start the timer at the same time. Vibrate the sieve for 10
min.
6.10 After the sieve shaking is completed, pour the remaining specimen in the strength
test sieve into a porcelain dish. Weigh it to an accuracy of 0.1 g.
6.11 Pour the specimen from the bottom plate of the sieve vibrator into another
porcelain plate. Weigh it to an accuracy of 0.1 g.
6.12 Repeat steps 6.1 to 6.11 to prepare another specimen.
7 Processing of determination results
7.1 The strength mass fraction is calculated according to formula (1):
Where,
H - strength mass fraction, %;
