Term for motorcycles and mopeds – Part 1: Types of
vehicles
1 Scope
This part of GB/T 5359 gives the terms and definitions of the vehicle types of
motorcycles and mopeds.
This Part applies to motorcycles and mopeds.
2 Type terms
2.1
motorcycle
Two-wheeled or three-wheeled motor-driven vehicle, with a maximum design speed
not exceeding 50 km/h, or it meet one of the following criteria:
-- if the driving motor is a thermic engine, its displacement must not exceed 50 mL;
-- if the driving motor is electric, its motor’s maximum continuous rated power is
greater than 4 kW.
But not including the following types:
Motor-driven wheelchair specially for the disabled people, whose maximum design
vehicle speed, complete vehicle unladen mass, overall dimensions, etc. comply with
relevant national standards and regulations.
2.1.1
electric motorcycle
Motor-driven motorcycle, including electric two-wheeled motorcycle and electric three
wheel motorcycle.
NOTE: For electric three-wheeled motorcycle, the complete vehicle unladen mass does not
include the mass of power storage batteries.
2.1.2
dual-purpose bike
Two-wheeled motorcycle which adopts a ride-one frame and off-road wheels, which
are mainly used on roads and which can also be used on rough roads.
2.1.3.4
off-road bike
Two wheeled motorcycle which adopts a ride-on frame and off-road wheels and which
are mainly used on rough roads.
2.1.3.5
general racer bike
Two-wheeled which is used on specific tracks for racing.
2.1.3.6
road racer bike
Two-wheeled motorcycle which is used on closed roads for racing.
2.1.3.7
motor-crosser racer bike
Two-wheeled motorcycle which is used on rough roads for racing.
2.1.3.8
trial bike
Two-wheeled motorcycle which is used to compete for driver endurance and vehicle
performance.

motorcycle with two wheels for specific purpose
motorcycle with two wheels for specific purpose
2.1.4
motorcycle with sidecar (L4)
Motorcycle for which sidecar is installed on the right side of two-wheeled motorcycle.
-- if the driving motor is electric, its motor’s maximum continuous rated power is
greater than 4 kW.
But not including the following types:
a) motor-driven wheelchair specially for the disabled people, whose maximum
design vehicle speed, complete vehicle unladen mass, overall dimensions, etc.
comply with relevant national standards and regulations;
b) vehicle complying with electric bicycle national standard.
2.2.1
electric moped
Electrical-driven moped, including electrical-driven two-wheeled moped and electrical-
driven three-wheeled moped.
Note: For electric three-wheeled motorcycles, the complete vehicle unladen mass does not
include the mass of power storage batteries.
2.2.2
hybrid electric moped
Moped which comply with the definitions of moped and electrical-driven moped and
are capable of obtaining power from the following two kinds of vehicle-mounted stored
energy at least:
-- consumable fuel;
-- rechargeable/energy storage device.
2.2.2.1
plug-in hybrid electric moped
Hybrid moped which has the plug-in charging function and a certain endurance range
in the pure electrical-driven mode, including extended-range hybrid moped.
2.2.2.2
extended-range hybrid electric moped
Hybrid moped for which auxiliary generation device can provide electric energy for
power system to extend endurance mileage, when vehicle-mounted rechargeable
battery cannot satisfy the endurance mileage requirements; and there is no
transmission shaft between vehicle-mounted auxiliary generation device and power
