Microstructure and Defect Determination of Tungsten
Carbide Powder
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the scanning electron microscope detection method for
microstructure observation and defect analysis of tungsten carbide powder.
This Standard is applicable to the scanning electron microscope detection of the
microstructure and defect of tungsten carbide power with a particle size of 0.1 μm ~
0.5 μm.

4 Principle
Use a scanning electron microscope to observe the morphology of the prepared
tungsten carbide powder. From the morphology, distinguish the hard agglomeration of
tungsten carbide powder, the thick tungsten carbide powder, the aggregation of grain
inhibitors and the impurities. Through an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer,
determine the grain inhibitors and the impurities.
5 Instruments and Equipment
5.1 Scanning electron microscope.
5.2 X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer.
5.3 Ultrasonic disperser.
5.4 Sample stage: the sample stage shall be conductive; the end surface shall be
smooth, flat and clean.
and record the number and size of the thick tungsten carbide powder. See Figure A.3.
NOTE: the thick tungsten carbide powder is a single tungsten carbide particle with a size
greater than 5 times the average particle size of the powder. The average particle
size of the powder can be Fischer particle size, laser particle size or the average
particle size of the powder converted from specific surface area.
7.2.6 If a structure with significantly different color and shape from that of the matrix
tungsten carbide powder is found, then, use the X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer
to perform elemental analysis on the observed structure, so as to determine whether
it is an aggregation of grain inhibitor or impurity. See Figure A.4, Figure A.5, Figure A.6
and Figure A.7.
7.2.7 In order to ensure that the observed tungsten carbide powder is representative,
it is recommended to browse at least 20 fields of view.
8 Processing of Test Data
8.1 Microstructure
Provide a representative picture of the microstructure, see Figure A.1.
8.2 Defects
8.2.1 Provide the number and size of the hard agglomeration of tungsten carbide
powder.
8.2.2 Provide the number and size of the thick tungsten carbide powder.
8.2.3 Provide the category of the agglomeration of grain inhibitor or the impurity.
9 Test Report
The test report shall include the following contents:
a) Serial No. of this document;
b) Necessary instruction for sample identification;
c) Number of fields of view for detection;
d) Picture of the microstructure of tungsten carbide powder;
e) Type, size and number of defects;
f) Other operations not specified or optional in this document;
