Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB/T 2899-2008 "Barium sulphate precipitated for
industrial use". Compared with GB/T 2899-2008, the main technical changes
except for editorial changes are as follows.
- ADD the index and test method of sulfide content (see 4.2 and 5.11);
- ADJUST the requirements of barium sulfate, volatiles at 105 °C, iron,
whiteness, fineness index (see 4.2; 4.2 of the 2008 edition);
- MODIFY the particle size distribution to the median particle size and
ADJUST the index requirements (see 4.2; 4.2 of the 2008 edition).
This standard was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Federation.
This standard shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Chemical
Standardization Technical Committee Inorganic Chemical Sub-Committee
(SAC/TC 63/SC 1).

1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules,
markings, labels, packaging, transportation and storage of barium sulphate
precipitated for industrial use.
This standard applies to barium sulphate precipitated for industrial use. This
product is mainly used in coatings, inks, pigments, rubber, batteries, plastics
and coated paper, metal smelting and other industries.

4 Requirements
4.1 Appearance. White powder.
5 Test method
Warning - Persons using this standard shall have practical experience in
formal laboratory work. This standard does not point out all possible
safety issues.
5.1 General provisions
The reagents and water used in this standard refer to, unless otherwise
specified, analytically pure reagents and grade-3 water as specified in GB/T
6682-2008.The standard titration solutions, preparations and products used in
the test are prepared according to the provisions of HG/T 3696.1-2011 and
HG/T 3696.3 unless otherwise specified.
5.3 Determination of barium sulfate content
5.3.1 Principle
The specimen and the mixture of sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate
are melted at high temperature. The barium sulfate is converted into barium
carbonate. The barium carbonate is dissolved by hydrochloric acid solution to
produce barium chloride; then determined by the barium sulfate gravimetric
method.
5.3.2 Reagents or materials
5.3.4 Test procedure
Weigh about 1 g of the specimen which had been dried according to 5.4,
accurate to 0.0002 g. Place it in a platinum crucible into which 4 g of molten
mixture has been added. Mix it uniformly. Then cover another 4 g of molten
mixture above it and close the lid. Place the platinum crucible in a high-
temperature electric furnace. Melt it at 800 °C ± 20 °C for 40 min. Take it out to
cool it down.
5.4 Determination of volatile matter at 105 °C
Operate according to GB/T 5211.3.The calculation result is represented in two
decimal places.
5.5 Determination of water soluble content
Weigh about 10 g of specimen, accurate to 0.01 g. Operate according to GB/T
5211.2.The calculation result is represented in two decimal places.
5.6 Determination of iron content
5.6.1 Principle
Same as Chapter 3 of GB/T 3049-2006.
5.6.2 Reagents or materials
5.6.3 Instrument and equipment
Spectrophotometer, which is equipped with cuvette with optical path of 4 cm.
5.6.4 Test procedure

5.8.1 Reagents or materials
Same as Chapter 4 of GB/T 5211.15-2014.
5.8.2 Instrument and equipment
Same as Chapter 5 of GB/T 5211.15-2014.
5.9 Determination of pH
5.9.1 Reagents or materials
Same as Chapter 1 of GB/T 1717-1986.
5.9.2 Instrument and equipment
Same as Chapter 2 of GB/T 1717-1986.
5.9.3 Test procedure
Weigh 10 g ± 0.01 g of specimen. Place it in a glass container. Add 90 mL of
carbon dioxide-free water. Operate according to Chapter 3 of GB/T 1717-1986,
but change the shaking time from 1 min into 2 min and standing time from 5
min to 10 min.
5.10 Determination of fineness
6 Inspection rules
6.1 This standard uses type inspection and exit-factory inspection. Type
inspection and exit-factory inspection shall meet the following requirements.
6.2 The barium sulphate precipitated for industrial use of the same grade as
produced continuously (or by the same shift) by the manufacturer using the
same materials, basically the same production conditions form a batch. Each
batch of products does not exceed 120 t.
6.3 Determine the number of sampling units according to the provisions of GB/T
6678.When sampling, the sampler is inserted vertically from the center of the
packaging bag to sample at 3/4 of the depth of the material layer.
6.4 If an index of inspection results does not meet the requirements of this
standard, it shall take sample from twice the amount of packaging for re-
inspection. If an index of the re-inspection does not meet the requirements of
this standard, the entire batch of products is unqualified.
7 Markings and labels
7.1 There shall be a firm and clear mark on the packing bag of the barium sulfate
precipitated for industrial use. The content of marking includes manufacturer
name, factory address, product name, grade, net content, batch number (or
production date), this standard number, the markings of “Avoid sun exposure”
or “Avoid rain” as specified in GB/T 191-2008.
8 Packaging, transportation and storage
8.1 Barium sulphate precipitated for industrial use is packed in double layers.
The inner packaging uses polyethylene plastic film bags; the outer packaging
uses plastic woven bags.
