Part 1: General
1 Scope
1.1 GB/T 20801 specifies the basic requirements for the design, fabrication, assembly,
inspection, testing and safeguarding of industrial metal pressure piping.
1.2 This Part of GB/T 20801 specifies the basic requirements for pressure piping, such
as: the scope of application and the classification of piping.
1.3 In this Part, industrial metal pressure piping (hereinafter referred to as “pressure
piping”) includes pressure piping for process equipment, auxiliary equipment and
public works within the boundary.
This Part is applicable to piping under the following conditions:
a) Pressure piping: the maximum working pressure is greater than or equal to
0.1 MPa (gauge pressure); the medium is gas, liquefied gas, steam, or
combustible, explosive, toxic and corrosive liquid whose maximum working
temperature is higher than or equal to the standard boiling point; the nominal
diameter is greater than or equal to 50 mm. Except for piping whose nominal
diameter is less than 150 mm, the maximum working pressure is less than 1.6
MPa (gauge pressure), and transports non-toxic, non-flammable, non-
corrosive gases and piping that belongs to the equipment body.
b) Pressure piping other than those listed in 1.5.
1.4 This Part does not include the following scopes:
a) Special requirements for the renovation, examination, inspection, testing,
maintenance and repair of in-service pressure piping;
b) Piping whose nominal pressure is above PN420;
c) Non-metallic piping or its lining layer.
1.5 The inapplicable scope of this Part is as follows:
a) Piping for military equipment and nuclear facilities;
b) Piping for exploration and mining equipment of petroleum, natural gas and

What is defined in GB/T 20801.2, GB/T 20801.3, GB/T 20801.4, GB/T 20801.5 and
GB/T 20801.6, and the following terms and definitions are applicable to this document.
3.1 Piping
Piping refers to a system that is assembled from piping components, and used for
conveying, distributing, mixing, separating, discharging, metering or cutting off fluid
flow.
NOTE: in addition to piping components, it also includes pipe-supporting elements, but
does not include supporting structures, such as: building frames, pipe racks, pipe
galleries and bases (pipe piers or foundations), etc.
3.2 Nominal Pressure; PN
Nominal pressure refers to a parameter consisting of the letters PN and a
dimensionless integer number, which represents the pressure level of the piping
component.
3.3 Nominal Diameter; DN
Nominal diameter refers to a parameter consisting of the letters DN and a
dimensionless integer number, which represents the specification of the piping
component.
3.4 Pipe; Tube
Pipe (tube) refers to a sealed hollow continuum used to convey fluids or transfer fluid
pressure.
3.5 Piping Component
Piping component refers to a mechanical component used to connect or assemble into
a piping system with sealed pressure.
NOTE: it includes pressure piping components (pipe, pipe fitting, valve, flange,
compensator, sealing component, special component), safety accessories (safety
valve, bursting disc device, emergency cut-off valve), as well as fasteners, flame
arresters, expansion joints, flexible joints, pressure hoses, filters, instruments (for
example, orifice plate) in pipelines and separators, etc.
3.6 Pipe-supporting Element
Pipe-supporting element refers to an element that is used to transfer piping load,
including the weight of piping, the weight of conveying fluid, the load caused by
hydrocarbons); classified in accordance with the flash point and boiling point. See
Appendix A for details.
3.12 Gas
In addition to the definition in 3.10, the “gas” involved in the scope of GB/T 20801 also
includes steam, liquefied gas, liquids whose maximum working temperature is higher
than or equal to the standard boiling point, as well as two-phase or multi-phase fluid
media, including the gas phase.
4 Classification of Pressure Piping
4.1 In accordance with the extent of hazards and the safety level, the “pressure piping”
listed in 1.3 a) is divided into Level-GC1 and Level-GC2:
a) Pressure piping that complies with one of the following conditions shall be
divided as Level-GC1:
1) Pressure piping that conveys Acute Toxicity Category 1 medium, Acute
Toxicity Category 2 gas medium, and Acute Toxicity Category 2 liquid
medium whose working temperature is higher than its standard boiling
point, as specified in the “Catalog of Hazardous Chemicals (version
2015)”.
2) Pressure piping that conveys fire hazard First-Class and Second-Class
flammable gas, or First-Class flammable liquid (including liquefied
hydrocarbon) as specified in GB 50160-2008 and GB 50016-2014, and
with the design pressure greater than or equal to 4.0 MPa.
3) Pressure piping that conveys fluids other than the first two media, and
with the design pressure greater than or equal to 10.0 MPa, or, with the
design pressure greater than or equal to 4.0 MPa, and the design
temperature greater than or equal to 400 °C.
b) Pressure piping that complies with the following condition shall be divided as
Level-GC2:
Pressure piping whose medium toxicity or flammability hazard and extent of
hazards, design pressure and design temperature are lower than the
stipulations of 4.1 a) (Level-GC1).
4.2 Pressure piping that is listed in 1.3 b) and complies with the following condition
shall be divided as Level-GC3:
Pressure piping that conveys non-toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive liquid media,
and with the design pressure of less than or equal to 1.0 MPa, and design temperature

Classification of Medium Toxicity and Flammability in Pressure
Piping
A.1 General Regulations
A.1.1 The hazards, the extent of hazards, the classification principle and definition of
media in pressure piping are determined on the basis of the stipulations of GB 50160-
2008, GB 50016-2014, “Catalog of Hazardous Chemicals (version 2015)” and GB
30000.
A.1.2 The hazard of media refers to the extent of health hazard and safety hazard
caused by the contact between the media and the human body due to accidental
leakage during the production and storage process. It is expressed by the toxicity and
flammability of the media. The division of the extent of hazards and dangers shall be
respectively determined in accordance with the stipulations of A.2 and A.3.
A.1.3 A chemical medium might have multiple types of hazards and dangers, which
shall be respectively evaluated in accordance with GB 30000.2 ~ GB 30000.29, so as
to determine the extent of hazards and dangers (the higher one shall be subject to).
A.1.4 The hazardous chemicals listed in A.2 and A.3, and their mixtures shall be
considered as toxic and flammable hazardous media.
A.2 Flammability
A.2.1 Flammable gas
In accordance with the stipulations of GB 50160-2008 and GB 50016-2014, the
classification of flammable gases involved in pressure piping is shown in Table A.1.

Part 1. General
1 Scope
1.1 GB/T 20801 "Pressure Piping Code-Industrial Piping" specifies basic requirements on
design, fabrication, installation, examinations, tests and safety protection of industrial metallic
pressure piping.
1.2 This part specifies basic requirements on application scope of pressure piping and
classifying of piping.
1.3 The industrial metallic pressure piping (refer to as "pressure piping") mentioned in this
part includes pressure piping for process devices, auxiliary devices and those for utilities
within battery limit.
1.3.1 This part is applicable to design and fabrication of "pressure piping" specified in
Safety Supervision regulations for Special Equipment". The "pressure piping" specified in
that regulation means piping that the maximum operation pressure is larger than or equal to
O.lMPa, with gas, liquefied gas, vapor medium or inflammable, explosive, poisonous, corrosive
and liquid medium that maximum operation temperature is higher than or equal to standard
boiling point, and nominal diameter is larger than 25mm.
1.3.2 This part is also applicable to design and fabrication of "pressure piping" that the
nominal diameter is less or equal to 25mm, maximum operation pressure is lower than O.lMPa,
or with vacuum, non-inflammable, none-poisonous, none-corrosive liquid medium.
1.4 This part is not applicable to the following scopes.
a) Piping that nominal pressure is above PN 420;
b) Piping for military facilities and nuclear facilities;
c) Piping for exploration and excavation devices for petroleum, natural gas and
geothermy etc.;
d) Piping for offshore facilities and coal pits;
e) Piping specially for electrical and telecommunication;
f) Pressure piping on mobilizable equipment such as railway trammers, automobiles,
ships and aerospace vehicles;
g) Piping in utilities for civil facilities;
h) Long-distance (petroleum or gas) delivery piping or gathering/delivery piping in
petroleum/gas field;
i) Internal piping and pipe orifice of equipment external connection for finalized
columns, beams and framing of steel structure or reinforced concrete structure, and can be
divided into single layer and multi layers, traffic-allowable or traffic-unallowable etc
according to its types.
3.10 Toxic medium
A general name of up-most, high or intermediate hazard medium according to definition
in GB 5044.
3.11 Combustible medium and flammable medium
A general name of grade A, grade B and fluid that operating temperature is above flash
point according to definition in GB 50160.
4 Classifying of Pressure Piping
Pressure piping can be divided into three grades, GC 1, GC2 and GC3 according to
hazard degree and safety rating.
4.1 Any pressure piping which meet any of following conditions can be regarded as grade
GCl.
4.1.1 Pressure piping which transmit following toxic medium.
a) Up-most hazard medium;
b) High hazard gas medium;
c) High hazard liquid medium that operating temperature is above standard boiling
point.
4.1.2 Pressure piping which transmit the following combustible medium and flammable
medium, and design pressure is higher than or equal to 4. OMPa.
a) Grade A and grade B flammable gas;
b) Liquefied hydrocarbon;
c) Grade A-B flammable liquid.
4.1.3 Pressure piping that design pressure is higher than or equal to 10.0MPa, or design
pressure is higher than or equal to 4.0MPa while design temperature is higher than or equal to
400°C.
4.2 Any pressure piping which meet any of following conditions can be regarded as grade
GC2.
Pressure piping that toxic degree of medium, fire hazardous (flammability), design
pressure or design temperature is lower than that for grade GCl pressure piping specified in
4.1, and is exclusive in 4.3 for grade GC3 pressure piping.
4.3 Any pressure piping which meet any of following conditions can be regarded as grade
GC3.
