Foreword
This Standard replaces GB/T 16632-1996 “Determination of scale inhibition
performance of water treatment agents - Calcium carbonate precipitation
method”.
Compared with GB/T 16632-1996, there is no technical difference.
This Standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Water Treatment Agent Branch
of National Chemistry Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC 63/SC 5).
The drafting organizations of this Standard. Qingyuan Jiyuan Industrial Co., Ltd.,
Tianjin Chemical Research & Design Institute, and Shandong Taihe Water
Treatment Co., Ltd.
Main drafters of this Standard. Wang Zhiqing, Zhu Chuanjun, Sun Baoji, Li Lin,
and Bai Ying.
This Standard was issued in 1996 for the first time.
Determination of scale inhibition performance of water
treatment agents - Calcium carbonate precipitation
method
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the determination method of scale inhibition
performance that similar water treatment agents inhibit the separation of
calcium carbonate, i.e., calcium carbonate precipitation method.
This Standard is applicable to the assessment of scale inhibition performance
that similar water treatment agents inhibit the separation of calcium carbonate.
2 Normative References
The following standards contain the provisions which, through reference in this
Standard, constitute the provisions of this Standard. For dated references,
subsequent amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to
this Standard. However, the parties who enter into agreement based on this
Standard are encouraged to investigate whether the latest versions of these
documents are applicable. For undated reference documents, the latest
versions apply to this Standard.

3 Method Summary
Use the prepared water that contains certain amount of calcium bicarbonate
and calcium ion AND water treatment agent to prepare the test solution. Under
heating conditions, it accelerates the calcium bicarbonate to decompose to
calcium carbonate. After equilibrium is reached, determine the calcium ion’s
per liter (mol/L);
V - the calcium chloride standard solution taken, in milliliter (mL);
M - the molar mass of calcium (Ca2+), in grams per mole (g/mol) (M=40.08).
4.9 Water treatment agent sample solution. 1.00 mL contains about 0.500 mg
of water treatment agent (calculated by dry basis).
5 Instrument & Apparatus
5.1 Thermostatic water bath. the temperature shall be controlled at (80±1)°C.
5.2 Conical flask. 500 mL, equipped with stopper of Φ5 mm~Φ10 mm, glass
tube of 300 mm long.
6 Preparation of Sample Solution
6.1 Preparation of test solution
Add 250 mL of water into 500 mL flask; use buret to add a certain volume of
standard solution of calcium chloride, so as to make the amount of calcium ions
to be 120 mg. Use suction pipette to add 5.0 mL of water treatment agent
sample solution; shake evenly. Then add 20 mL of borax buffer solution; shake
evenly. Use buret to slowly add a certain volume of standard solution of sodium
bicarbonate (shake while adding), so as to make the amount of bicarbonate
ions to be 366 mg; use water to dilute to scale; shake evenly.
6.2 Preparation of blank test solution
In another 500 mL flask, except that the sample solution is not added with water
treatment agent, follow Step 6.1 to operate.
7 Analysis Steps
Respectively place the test solution and the blank test solution in two clean
conical flasks; dip these two flasks into thermostatic water bath of (80±1) °C
(the test solution shall not exceed the level of the liquid in the water bath); place
in constant temperature for 10 h. After it is cooled to room temperature, use
medium speed quantitative filter paper to dry filter. Respectively pipette 25.00
mL of filtrate; place in 250 mL conical flasks; add water to 80 mL; add 5 mL of
potassium hydroxide solution and about 0.1 g of calcium - carboxylic acid
indicator. Use edetate disodium standard solution to titrate the solution till the
end point - it turns from purplish red to bright blue. Use equation (2) to
