1 Scope
This standard specifies the designation of metallic coating and chemical
treatment.
This standard applies to the designation for the electroplating, chemical plating,
and chemical treatment for metallic and non-metallic parts.
As for the designation for aluminum and aluminum alloy surface chemical
treatment, it may make reference to the general designation methods as
specified in this standard.
Note. when there is requirements for the metallic coating and chemical
treatment which are not covered in this standard, it is allowed to make
description in relevant technical documents.
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard
through reference in this Standard. For the dated references, the subsequent
amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to this Standard;
however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are
encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies.

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions established in GB/T 3138 apply to this standard.
4 Designation for metallic coating and chemical
treatment
4.1 The designation for metallic coating and chemical treatment is generally
composed of four parts.
Part 1 includes the coating method, which is an essential element to constitute
the designation;
5 Examples of designation for typical coatings
5.1 Designation of nickel + chromium and copper + nickel + chromium
electroplating on metallic base
As for the designation of the nickel + chromium and copper + nickel +
chromium electroplated layer on the metallic base, SEE the provisions of GB/T
9797 on designations; as for the designation of coating characteristics, SEE
Table 3; the example of typical designation is as below; as for the non-typical
designation, SEE GB/T 9797.
5.2 Nickel + chromium coating on plastic
As for the designations of nickel + chromium, copper + nickel + chromium
coating layer on plastics, SEE the provisions on designation in GB/T 12600; as
for the coating characteristic designation, SEE Table 3.The example and
description of designation are as follows.
5.4 Designation of zinc coating layer and cadmium coating layer on iron
and steel
As for the designations of zinc coating layer and cadmium coating layer on iron
and steel, SEE the provisions on designation in GB/T 9799 and GB/T 13346;
as for the chemical treatment and classification symbols related to
electro-galvanizing and cadmium plating layer, SEE Table 4.The example and
description of designation are as follows.
5.5 Designation of chromium electroplating for engineering purposes
As for the designation for the chromium electroplated layer for engineering
purposes, SEE the provisions in GB/T 11379.As for the characteristic symbols
of the chromium coating for engineering purposes in the designation, SEE
Table 5.In order to ensure good adhesion between the coating and the base
metal, the chromium for engineering purposes shall, before and after
electroplating, be subjected to heat treatment sometimes.
5.6 Designation of nickel electroplating for engineering purposes
As for the designation for the nickel electroplating for engineering purposes,
SEE the provisions of GB/T 12332.As for the engineering nickel coating type,
sulfur content and ductility symbol in the designation, SEE Table 7.In order to
ensure good adhesion between the coating and the base metal, the nickel for
engineering purposes shall, before and after electroplating, be subjected to
heat treatment sometimes. As for the characteristic symbols for the coating
heat treatment, SEE Table 6.The example and description of designation are
as follows.
5.8 Designation of silver and silver alloy electroplating for engineering
purposes
As for the designations for the silver and silver alloy electroplating for
engineering purposes, SEE the provisions in ISO 4521.As for the commonly
used thickness of precious metal electroplating, SEE Table 8.The example of
typical designation is as follows, AND the non-typical designation is as shown
in ISO 4521.
