Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB/T 11951-1989 “Textiles - Natural fiber - Terminology”.
The main differences between this standard and GB/T 11951-1989 are.
- MODIFY the standard name;
- MODIFY the scope of the standard;
- In “animal fibers”, ADD the classification of “fibers secreted by some
molluscs” (see 2.2 and 3.1.2);
- ADD 7 terms (see 3.1.1.3, 3.2.2.13, 3.2.2.14, 3.2.3.10 ~ 3.2.3.13);

- MODIFY the English generic names of the two plants (see 3.2.2.12 and
3.2.3.9; 3.2.2.8 and 3.2.3.4 of the 1989 version);
- CHANGE “wool” into “sheep wool”, ADD the corresponding notes (see
3.1.3.1; 3.1.2.1 of the 1989 version);
- CHANGE “Alpaca hair” into “Alpaca wool”, “Guanaco hair” into “Guanaco
wool”, “Llama hair” into “Llama wool”, “Vicuna hair” into “Vicuna wool” (see
3.1.3.2, 3.1.3.6, 3.1.3.7, 3.1.3.9; 3.1.2.2, 3.1.2.6, 3.1.2.7, 3.1.2.9 of the
1989 version);
- DELETE the term “Zhongwei goat wool” (3.1.2.12 of the 1989 version);

- ADD notes on cannabis (see 3.2.2.1);
- In “bast fibers”, ADD the note on “Jute and similar fibers” (see footnote c of
3.2.2);
- DELETE the Chinese index from original Appendix A and English index from
Appendix B, ADD informative Appendix “Fiber terms, English generic name
and common name index table” (see Appendix A).
This standard uses the redrafting method to modify and adopt ISO 6938.2012
“Textiles - Natural fibers - Generic names and definitions”.
The technical differences between this standard and ISO 6938.2012 are as
follows.
Natural fibers - Terminology
1 Scope
This standard defines the terms and definitions of the main natural fibers used
for textiles based on the source or composition of the fibers, and provides the
corresponding English generic names and common names.
This standard applies to textile natural fibers.
Note. The English generic name for various natural fibers defined in this
standard is shown in Appendix A.
2 Natural fiber classification

by source.

the lepidopter order, in the form of two filaments of fibroin cemented
together by sericin.
- Fibers secreted by molluscs. fibres secreted by some molluscs.
- Fiber from hair follicles. with a multicellular structure, composed of keratin,
forming the animal hair follicles.
