This standard specifies the design, operation, performance and acceptance tests of electric, hydraulic, diesel or steam driven ocean-going tow winches.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions defined by ISO 3828 apply to this document.

Nominal speed
The maximum rope speed that the winch can maintain when the winch is subjected to the drum load.

Release load renderingload
The prime mover is set at a defined torque, and when the reel is wound with a single layer of wire rope, when the reel is opposite to the applied drive torque
The maximum rope tension measured at the reel of the reel when the direction is first turned.
