Foreword
According to the requirements of original Document Jian Biao (2003] No. 102 issued by
the Ministry of Construction-"Notice on Printing the Development and Revision Plan of
National Engineering Construction Standards in 2002 and 2003", China Academy of Building
Research jointly made a revision for the national standard "General Code for Construction and
Acceptance of Mechanical Equipment Installation Engineering" GB 50231-98 in conjunction
with the departments concerned.
During the process of revision, the revision group carried out extensive investigation and
research, summarized the practical experiences on mechanical equipment installation for the
last years, carried out monographic studues, made reference to a great deal documents and
engineering data, broadly solicited the the depa1tments concerned and experts for suggestions,
and revised, perfected and finalized this code through repeated discussions.
The revision contents cover.
1. Adjustment of chapter structures makes the division of chapters and section and the
mechanical product types in the revised code are uniform to the classification criteria for the
type spectrum of mechanical product series, the names are consistent with provision contents,
and the connection and cooperation among working procedures be more reasonable.
2. Such new varieties and new technologies as shock pad, sealant, mould seam, tight
joint sleeve, safety coupling, sprag clutch, and new-style water-base alkaline cleaner and acidic
cleaner are added. The technical contents in such provisions as high-tensile bolt and the
welding as well as pressure test and trial run of hydraulic pressure, pneumatic and lubrication
pipings are enriched.
The provisions 111 bold in this code are compulsory provisions and must be enforced
strictly.
Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Develepment is in charge of the administration of
this code and the explanation of the compulsory provisions, China Machinery Industry Federation
is responsible for the current management and China Cmiic Engineering & Construction
Corporation is responsible for the explanation of the compulsory provisions of the specific
technical contents. All relevant organizations are kindly requested to carefully sum up your
experiences combining with the engineering practice during the process of implementing this
code. The relevant opinions and advice on the points that need to be revised or supplemented,
whenever discovered, can be posted or passed on to the State Mechanical Industry Installation

1 General Provisions
1.0.1 This code was formulated in order to improve the construction level of mechanical
equipment installation engineering, promote technical progress, ensure the construction
quality and safety and improve the economic benefit.
1.0.2 This code is applicable to the general parts in the construction and acceptance of
various mechanical equipment installation engineerings.
1.0.3 The mechanical equipment installation engineering shall be started from the unpacking
of equipments to the construction and acceptance of the equipments in zero load test run, and
the mechanical equipments that shall have the test run with load, it shall be end until to the
load test run.
1.0.4 The construction of mechanical equipment installation engineering shall be carried out
according to the engineering design, the engineering design is prohibited to being revised
arbitrarily, corresponding opinions and advices shall be offered timely if any mistakes are
discovered in the design documents and drawings, besides, the construction shall be carried
out according to the engineering design modified by the original design organization.
1.0.5 The installed mechanical equipments, spare parts and primary materials must be
in accordance with those specified in the engineering design and the relevant product
standards and shall also be with the conformity certificates.
1.0.6 The various measuring instruments, detectors, instruments, apparatus and equi-
pments adopted in the mechanical equipment installation engineering must meet those
specified in the current relevant national standards; their precision class shall meet the
accuracy req uirement of the test item.
1.0.7 In the construction of mechanical equ ipment installation engineering, the construction
quality shall be inspected and recorded. As for the concealed engineering, it shall be inspected
and recorded before the engineering is concealed, and the equipments shall be continued to be
installed after the inspection is qualified. Tn the engineering acceptance, the acceptance check
and necessary random inspection work are carried out based on the related records.
1.0.8 The construction and acceptance of mechanical equipment installation engineering
shall not only comply with this code, but also shall comply with those specified in the in the
current relevant national standards.
3 Setting out Perch a nd Cen ter ing Leveling
3.0.1 Before the mechanical equipment are in place, the reference line of installation shall
be marked out according to the construction drawing and the axial line, edge line and
elevation line of relevant buildings.
3.0.2 The mechanical equipments that are mutually connected or with arrangemenf relation
shall be marked out with common installation datum line and shall be buried with center
reference plate or reference point according to the specific requirements of equipments. The
