Foreword

This Standard is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009. This Standard replaces GB/T 4649-2008 “Ethylene glycol for industrial use - Specification”. Compared with GB/T 4649-2008, the main changes of this Standard are as follows. - Delete the description of production process of ethylene glycol (see Clause 1; Clause 1 of the 2008 edition); - Delete the technical requirements for qualified products (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE “Superior product” to “Polyester grade” and “First-class product” to “Industrial grade” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE the appearance requirement of polyester grade and industrial grade products from “Colorless and transparent without mechanical impurities” to “Transparent liquid, without mechanical impurities” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE the content index of polyester grade ethylene glycol from “≥99.8%” to “≥99.9%”, and the content index of diethylene glycol from “≤0.10%” to “≤0.050%”. CHANGE the diethylene glycol content of industrial grade ethylene glycol from “≤0.80%” to “≤0.600%”, and the water content index from “≤0.10%” to “≤0.08%” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - ADD 1,2-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and vinyl carbonate items with the index “Report” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - ADD 250 nm for the polyester grade ultraviolet transmittance with the index “Report” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - For polyester grade, ADD chloride ion item and test method, with the index “≤0.5 mg/kg” (see Table 1 and 4.14; 5.7 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE the unit of measurement for items such as acidity, iron, ash content, aldehyde content from “%” to “mg/kg” (see Table 1; Table 1 of the 2008 edition); - Modify the gravimetric test requirements for the dispute of appearance visual determination results (see 4.3; 4.1 of the 2008 edition); - Modify the determination method of ethylene glycol content. Delete the previous formula 1.ADD the determination method of 1,2-butanediol, 1,4- butanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and vinyl carbonate content (see 4.4; 4.2, 4.10 of the 2008 edition); - For color determination, ADD GB/T 6324.6; USE GB/T 3143 as the arbitration method; MOVE the relevant content into Appendix A (see 4.5, Appendix A; 4.3 of the 2008 edition); - For density determination, ADD U-shaped vibrograph method of GB/T 2013-2010; delete the temperature correction in test by the density bottle method. USE GB/T 4472 density bottle method as the arbitration method. MOVE the relevant content into Appendix B (see 4.6, Appendix B; 4.4 of the 2008 edition); - For determination of boiling range, ADD 104C-75 thermometer meeting GB/T 7534-2008 (see 4.7); - For determination of water content, ADD SH/T 1055 and use this method as the arbitration method (see 4.8; 4.6 of the 2008 edition); - For acidity determination, ADD the provision that manual method is used as the arbitration method (see 4.9; 4.7 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE the sampling amount for determination of iron content from “80 g” to “70 g” (see 4.10; 4.8 of the 2008 edition); - Modify the analytical balance and constant weight requirements for determination of ash content. CHANGE the sensitivity from “0.1 mg” to “0.01 mg”; CHANGE “porcelain crucible” to “platinum crucible”; MOVE the relevant content into Appendix C (see 4.11, Appendix C; 4.9 of the 2008 edition); - Modify the starting conditions of type inspection (see 5.1; 5.1 of the 2008 edition); - CHANGE the judgement method for the inspection result from “full value comparison method” to “rounded-off value comparison method” (see 5.3); - Delete Clause “Safety” and move the relevant content into the informative appendix (see Appendix E; Clause 7 of the 2008 edition). 1 Scope

This Standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marks, labels, and accompanying documents, packaging, transportation, and storage of ethylene glycol for industrial use. This Standard applies to ethylene glycol used as monomers for the production of polyesters and alkyds and as electrolytes, antifreezes, plasticizers, solvents, etc. for electrolytic capacitors.

3 Technical requirements

The technical requirements for ethylene glycol for industrial use are shown in Table 1.

4 Test methods

4.1 Sampling Sampling shall be carried out in accordance with GB/T 3723, GB/T 6678, and GB/T 6680.After thoroughly mixing the samples taken, they are sub-packaged into 2 clean, dry, and sealable glass bottles and labeled with the manufacturer name, product name, lot number, sampling date, and sampling location. One bottle is for inspection and analysis. The other bottle is used as reserved sampled for future reference. 4.2 General provision Unless otherwise stated, only reagents confirmed as analytically pure and Grade 3 water meeting GB/T 6682 are used in the analysis. 4.3 Determination of appearance TAKE 50 mL~60 mL of the sample of ethylene glycol for industrial use; PLACE it in a clean and dry 100 mL colorimetric tube; under the transmission of sunlight or fluorescent lamp, visually inspect it directly. 4.5 Determination of color According to the provisions of Appendix A, carry out the determination. 4.6 Determination of density According to the provisions of Appendix B, carry out the determination. 4.8 Determination of water content It shall be carried out according to the provisions of SH/T 1055.It may also be measured by the provisions of GB/T 6283.When the result is controversial, SH/T 1055 is used as the arbitration method. 4.9 Determination of acidity It shall be carried out according to the provisions of GB/T 14571.1.When the result is controversial, manual titration is used as the arbitration method. 4.10 Determination of iron content It shall be carried out according to the provisions of GB/T 3049.When drawing a standard curve and measuring the sample, it is necessary to use a 100 mL volumetric flask or a 100 mL colorimetric tube and use a 3 cm (or 5 cm) cuvette. The sampling amount is 70 g±0.5 g. 4.11 Determination of ash content According to the provisions of Appendix C, carry out the determination. 4.12 Determination of aldehyde content According to the provisions of GB/T 14571.3, carry out the determination. 4.13 Determination of ultraviolet transmittance According to the provisions of GB/T 14571.4, carry out the determination.

5 Inspection rules

5.1 Inspection classification All index items in Table 1 are type inspection items and are exit-factory inspection items except for boiling range, density, iron content, ash content, and chloride ion. When one of the following conditions is encountered, it shall carry out the type inspection. 5.2 Lot grouping rules The same-quality and uniform products are one lot. According to the production cycle, production shift, or product storage tank, lot grouping may be carried out. 5.3 Judgement rules It shall be carried out according to the rounded-off value comparison method of GB/T 8170-2008.If the inspection results all meet the technical requirements of Table 1 of this Standard, this lot of products is judged as qualified.

6 Marks, labels, and accompanying documents

6.1 Packaging containers of ethylene glycol products for industrial use shall have a strong mark, indicating manufacturer name, product name, this Standard number, lot number or production date, net content. 6.2 Ethylene glycol is not a hazardous chemical, but it has certain toxicity and danger. For related safety requirements, see Appendix E.

7 Packaging, transportation, and storage

7.1 Packaging Ethylene glycol for industrial use shall be packaged in galvanized iron drums; or packaged in rail tank cars or cabins of aluminum or stainless steel containers (Aluminum rail tank cars shall meet the requirements of GB/T 10479). It shall keep the container sealed. 7.3 Storage Ethylene glycol for industrial use is a water-absorbing substance; shall be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse. KEEP away from fire and heat source. Protect from direct sunlight. During storage, it shall maintain the airtightness of packaging container. It shall be stored separately from oxidants and acid substances. ......
