commercial vehicles.
This standard applies to Categories N2 and N3 vehicles.
This standard doesn’t apply to.
- Category G vehicles specified in GB/T 15089;
- The vehicles which are designed and manufactured for special purposes and not intended to be fitted with
front underrun protection structurally.

3 TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this standard, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 15089 and the followings apply.
3.1
Front Underrun Protection (FUP)
"Front underrun protection" means either a special FUPD, or the body work, chassis parts or other components,
which can fulfill the function of front underrun protection by virtue of their shape and characteristics.
3.2
Front Underrun Protection Devices (FUPD)
“Front Underrun Protection Devices” means the device, usually consisting of cross members, is intended to be
installed on or linked with the chassis or other structural members.
4 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR FUPD
4.1 The FUPD shall offer adequate resistance to forces applied parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle
and also satisfy certain dimensional requirements. These shall be demonstrated in accordance with the test
conditions and procedure specified in Annex A.
4.2 The section height of the FUPD cross-member shall not be less than 100 mm for category N2 vehicles and
120 mm for vehicles of category N3.
4.3 The lateral extremities of the cross-member shall not bend to the front or have a sharp outer edge; the lateral
extremities of the cross-member shall be rounded on the outside and have a radius of curvature of not less than
2.5 mm.
4.4 The outer surfaces of the FUPD shall be smooth. The height of the heads of bolts or rivets which protrude
4
beyond the surface shall not exceed 10 mm.
4.5 The FUPD may be so designed that its position at the front of the vehicle can be varied. In this event, there
shall be a guaranteed method of securing it in the service position so that any unintentional change of position is
precluded. The force to be applied to vary the position of the device shall not exceed 400N.
5 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE FUPD
SATISFIED WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF CLAUSE 4
5.1 The maximum ground clearance with respect to the underside of the FUPD shall be no more than 400 mm,
under the conditions specified in A.2, between the two points P1.
5.2 Outboard of two P1 points this height may be greater than 400 mm, but the underside shall be below the
Plane M, which is a plane passing through the underside of the FUPD directly below the point P1 and forming a
slope at 15 degrees above the horizontal (see figure 3).
5.3 The maximum width of the FUPD shall not exceed the outer width of the fenders covering the front wheels.
The transverse horizontal distance measured from the outermost edge at any point of FUPD to the outermost end
plane of the front wheel tyres of the same side, excluding the deflection of the tyres, shall not be more than 100
mm, or to the outermost point of access steps to the driver's cabin shall not be more than 200 mm (see figure l).
5.4 Test shall be carried out under the conditions set out in Annex A, during the test process and after the test
completes, the horizontal distance measured from the foremost part of the vehicle to each testing point on front
end plane of the FUPD shall not exceed 400 mm (see figure 2).
5.5 Test shall be carried out under the conditions set out in Annex A, during the test process and after the test
completes, the maximum ground clearance with respect to the underside of the FUPD between the two points P1
shall be no more than 450 mm (see figure 2).
5.6 In measuring the distances as specified in 5.4, any part of the vehicle which is more than 2 m above the
ground shall be excluded.
6 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FRONT UNDERRUN
PROTECTION FUNCTION
6.1 The FUP shall offer adequate resistance to forces applied parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and
also satisfy certain dimensional requirements. These shall be demonstrated in accordance with the test conditions
and procedure specified in Annex A.
6.2 The section height of the cross-member with FUP function shall not be less than 100 mm for category N2
vehicles and 120 mm for vehicles of category N3.
6.3 The FUP may be so designed that its position at the front of the vehicle can be varied. In this event, there
shall be a guaranteed method of securing it in the service position so that any unintentional change of position is
precluded. The force to be applied to vary the position of the device shall not exceed 400N.
6.4 The maximum ground clearance with respect to the underside of the FUP shall be no more than 400 mm,
under the conditions specified in A.2, between the two points P1.
6.5 Outboard of two P1 points this height may be greater than 400 mm, but the underside shall be below the
Plane M, which is a plane passing through the underside of the FUP directly below the point P1 and forming a
slope at 15 degrees above the horizontal (see figure 3).
6.6 The maximum width of the FUP shall not exceed the outer width of the fenders covering the front wheels.
The transverse horizontal distance measured from the outermost edge at any point of FUP to the outermost end
plane of the front wheel tyres of the same side, excluding the deflection of the tyres, shall not be more than 100
mm, or to the outermost point of access steps to the driver's cabin shall not be more than 200 mm (see figure l).
6.7 Test shall be carried out under the conditions set out in Annex A, during the test process and after the test

(Normative)
Test Conditions and Procedures
A.1 TEST CONDITIONS FOR FUPDs
A.1.1 The test may be conducted either.
a) On a vehicle;
b) On a part of the chassis of the vehicle; or
c) On a rigid test bench.
A.1.2 When testing in accordance with paragraphs A.1.1b) or c), the parts used to connect the FUPD to part of
the vehicle chassis or to the rigid test bench shall be equivalent to those which are used to secure the FUPD
when it is installed on the vehicle.
