Technical Permission of Welding Materials for
Pressure Equipment - Section 6: Bare Aluminum and
Aluminum-alloy Welding Electrodes and Rods
1 Scope
This Section of NB/T 47018 specifies the designation preparation, technical
requirements, test methods and inspection rules of the titanium and titanium-
alloy welding electrodes and rods.
This Section is applicable to titanium and titanium-alloy welding electrodes and
rods used for the gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding and plasma
arc welding of pressure equipment.
2 Normative References
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of
this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated
references, the latest edition of the normative document (including any
amendments) applies.

3 Designation
3.1 The designation of welding electrodes and rods is classified according to
chemical composition and use occasion.
3.2 Designation preparation
4.3.3 If the chemical composition is retested through sampling from the
finished welding electrodes and rods, the analytic permissible deviation is
detailed in Table 3.
Table 3 -- The Permissible Deviation of the Chemical Component
Analysis of the Finished of the Titanium and Titanium-alloy Welding
Electrodes and Rods
4.4 Metallographic inspection (macroscopic)
The result of horizontal metallographic inspection (macroscopic) of the welding
electrodes and rods shall be free from crack, fold, pore, lamination, shrinkage,
metal or non-metallic inclusion and other defects that affect use.
4.5 Surface and macro quality
The surface of the welding electrodes and the surface shall be clean, smooth
and free from burr, pit, scratch, oxide skin, fold and other defects that influence
use. It shall also not be contaminated by the lubricant and other foreign matters.
4.6 Longitudinal bending performance of the deposited metal
Where the bending sample of the deposited metal is bended to the specified
angle, the deposited metal on its stretching plane shall be free from opening
defect with single length longer than 3mm in any direction; the opening defect
on the corner angle of deposited metal on sample shall be ignored. However,
the length of opening defect on corner angle caused by the incomplete fusion,
slag inclusion or other internal imperfection shall be counted.
6.2.2 Where the horizontal metallographic inspection (macroscopic) is carried
out, 2 reels (sticks) of welding electrodes and rods shall be taken from each
batch and 1 sample shall be taken at each end of the welding electrode and
rod.
6.2.3 The dimension, surface and macro quality of welding electrodes and
rods shall be inspected per stick (reel).
7 Winding of Welding Electrodes
7.1 The welding electrodes shall be supplied in reels or coils with internal
support while the rods shall be supplied in strips.
The supply form of welding electrodes shall be determined through negotiation
between the supplier and the purchaser; other form may also be adopted.
7.2 The welding electrodes and rods shall ensure the continuous feeding for
automatic or semi-automatic welding equipment.
7.3 The welding electrodes of each reel or coil shall be of the same furnace
number and continuous length; the winding of welding electrodes shall be free
from sharp bend, knot, wrinkle, insertion, overlap and shall be unreeled free.
The outer end of welding electrodes shall be fixed and marked to be easy for
searching.
7.4 The welding electrodes shall be properly processed where joint is
available. Thus the effect on the uniform and continuous feeding of welding
electrodes in welding equipment is avoided.
8 Packaging
8.1 The internal packaging of welding electrodes and rods shall be dry and
free from environmental pollution and rust.
8.2 The external packaging of welding electrodes and rods shall be free from
damage during transportation and storage.
9 Identification
9.1 The internal and external packaging, instruction and quality certificate of
welding electrodes and rods prepared according to the requirements of this
Section shall be marked with font style of "Titanium and Titanium-alloy Welding
Electrodes (Rods) for Pressure Equipment" and product identification of "NB/T
47018". The product identification shall also be marked on the label of internal
packaging.
9.2 The designation and product identification shall be marked the end of
each strip rod in permanent marking.
