Foreword
This Standard gives three levels of guaranteed reagent, analytically pure and
chemically pure. The guaranteed reagent inequivalently adopts R11 “Ethanol” in ISO
6353-2:1983 Reagents for Chemical Analysis – Part 2: Specifications – First Series.
Their differences are as follows:
--- Specification: Compared with ISO standard, the guaranteed reagent of this
Standard adds three items including water mixing test, iron and zinc; reduces
one item of high-carbon alcohol. Six indicators of guaranteed reagents of
methanol, isopropanol, evaporation residue, acidity, alkalinity, and reduction of
potassium permanganate are stricter than ISO standard.
--- Test: Except for the test of mixing with water, all other items have adopted the
general test method standards for chemical reagents that have been formulated
in China.
This Standard was revised on the basis of GB/T 678-1990 Chemical Reagent –
Ethanol. Compared with the previous edition, the items and indicators are not changed.
This Standard replaced GB/T 678-1990 since the implementation date.
This Standard was proposed by China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee on Chemical Reagent
of National Technical Committee for Standardization of Chemical.
Drafting organization of this Standard: Beijing Beihua Fine Chemicals Co., Ltd.
Chief drafting staffs of this Standard: Sun Jisheng, and Li Li.
This Standard was first-time published in 1965; revised in 1978 and 1990, respectively.
Chemical Reagent – Ethanol
Rational formula: CH3CH2OH
Relative molecular mass: 46.07 (according to the international relative molecular mass
in 1997)
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules,
packaging and marking of chemical reagent – ethanol (anhydrous ethanol).
2 Normative References

5 Test
Unless otherwise specified in this Clause, all used standard titration solutions,
standard solutions, reagents and products shall be prepared in accordance with GB/T
601, GB/T 602, and GB/T 603. The water used in laboratory shall conform to the
specification of Class-III water in GB/T 6682-1992; samples shall be taken accurate to
0.1mL.
5.1 Mass fraction of ethanol
It shall be measured according to the provisions of GB/T 9722.
5.1.1 Measurement conditions
Detector: flame ionization detector;
Carrier gas and flow rate: nitrogen, 9 cm/s;
Column length (stainless-steel column): 3m;
Inner diameter of column: 3mm;
Stationary phase: 401 organic carrier washed by acetone [0.18mm~0.25mm (60 mesh
~ 80mesh)], aging for 4h above at 180°C;
Column temperature: 120°C;
Vaporization chamber temperature: 150°C;
Detecting chamber temperature: 150°C;
Sample-injection volume: no less than 0.4µL;
Effective board height of chromatographic column: Heff ≤ 3mm;
Asymmetry factor: f ≤ 3.4;
Relative retention value of components against the subject: r methanol, ethanol = 0.47; r
isopropanol, ethanol = 2.37.
5.1.2 Quantitative method
According to the provision of 8.2 in GB/T 9722-1988, mass correction factor of
component methanol against ethanol, f methanol/ethanol = 2.2 is required to be corrected.
5.2 Density
Pipette 0.63mL (0.5g) of sample; measure according to the provisions of GB/T 9733.
The solution turns dark-red, but shall be no darker than standard comparison solution.
The preparation of standard comparison solution shall take the standard solution
containing the following amount of carbonyl compounds.
Treat at the same time as the sample.
5.11 Carbonizable substances
It shall be measured according to the provisions of GB/T 9737. Thereof, pipette 10mL
of sulfuric acid (guaranteed reagent with mass fraction of 95% ± 0.5%); cool off to 10°C;
add 10mL (the solution temperature shall be no greater than 20°C at the same time)
of sample dropwise under shaking condition; stand for 5min. The solution color shall
be no darker than the following standard color:
5.12 Iron
Pipette 25mL (20g) of the sample; place it in an evaporation dish; add 0.5 mL of sulfuric
acid solution (with mass fraction of 10%); evaporate to near dryness under an infrared
lamp or a water bath at about 75°C; dilute to 15 mL; and use ammonia aqueous
solution (with mass fraction of 10%) to adjust the pH of the solution to 2; then measure
it according to the provisions of GB/T 9739. The solution color shall be no darker than
the standard comparison solution.
The standard comparison solution is prepared by taking a standard solution containing
0.002 mg of iron (Fe); add 0.5 mL of sulfuric acid solution (with mass fraction of 10%).
Dilute to 15 mL and treat the same volume of test solution at the same time.
5.13 Zinc
It shall be measured according to the provisions of GB/T 9723.
