Foreword
This Standard revised GB 5453-85 according to the international standard ISO 9237.1995. The revised text is equivalent to the international standard in terms of main technical contents; meanwhile, adds the content suitable for existing domestic instruments.
Compared with the original standard (GB 5453-85), this Standard has the major changes in the following aspects.
1.
The air permeability index is changed from air permeability capacity to air permeability rate;
2.
Add the requirements for the test area;
3.
The original pressure drop on both sides of the specimen is specified as 13mmH2O (127Pa); now it is changed into 50Pa, 100Pa, 200Pa, 500Pa according to the fabric types;
4.
The test results were added calculation of coefficient of variation CV (%) and 95% confidence interval.
This Standard shall replace GB 5453-85 since the effective date.
The Appendix A, Appendix B of this Standard are informative.
This Standard was proposed by Science and Technology Development Department of China National Textile Council.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Standardization Research Institute of China National Textile Council.
Drafting organizations of this Standard. Shanghai Textile Science Research Institute, and National Cotton Textile Quality Supervision and Inspection Center.
Chief drafting staffs of this Standard. Li Xiaowen, Mai Jiajun, Wang Baojun, and Yan Meihua.
Textiles – Determination of
the Permeability of Fabrics to Air
1 Scope
This Standard describes a method for measuring the permeability of fabrics to air and is applicable to most types of fabrics, including industrial fabrics, nonwovens and other textile articles that are permeable to air.
2 Normative References
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this Standard, constitute provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated are valid. All standards are subject to revision. The parties who are using this Standard shall explore the possibility of using the latest version of the following standards.
GB 6031-85 Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic – Determination of Hardness (30~85IRHD)
GB 6529-86 Standard Atmospheres for Textiles Conditioning and Testing

3 Definitions
This Standard adopts the following definition.
Air permeability
The property of air to penetrating the fabrics. Velocity of an air flow passing perpendicularly through a test specimen under specified conditions of test area, pressure drop and time.
4 Principle
Under specified pressure difference condition, measure the air flow perpendicularly passing through the given specimen area within certain time period, and calculate the
