petroleum-based or non-petroleum-based brake fluid
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the labelling to designate brake system and hydraulic
system brake fluid (petroleum-based, non-petroleum-based or silicon-based) of
road vehicles (including motorcycles and mopeds), and graphical symbols to
designate brake fluid.
This Standard applies to the labelling of containers for brake fluid products and
containers for brake fluid on vehicles (hereinafter referred to as “containers”).
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of
this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated
references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
amendments) applies.

MOD)
3 Terms and definitions
For the purpose of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
petroleum-based brake fluid
Brake fluid processed from a variety of hydrocarbons.
3.2
non-petroleum-based brake fluid
Brake fluid using synthetic fluid as base fluid and added with various additives.
3.3
4.4.2 The container used only for petroleum-based brake fluid shall also bear
the following safety warning:
“Petroleum-based brake fluid is not compatible with the rubber components of
brake systems and hydraulic systems designed for use with non-petroleum-
based brake fluid as specified by GB 12981.”
4.5 Placement and visibility
4.5.1 For containers for brake fluid products, the labelling shall be positioned
on the containers (excluding the container covers).
4.5.2 For containers for brake fluid on vehicles, the outer surface shall bear the
minimum and maximum fluid levels, and the remaining labelling may be
positioned on the cover of containers for brake fluid or within 100 mm from it.
4.5.3 The contents of the labelling shall be clearly and permanently marked on
the main surface easily visible on the container, and the height of the letter shall
not be less than 3.2 mm.
4.6 Additional information
4.6.1 The container shall bear storage conditions and recommended use
periods.
4.6.2 If necessary, the container shall bear information such as toxicity warnings
and flammability warnings, i.e. “Brake fluid is not a flammable dangerous
substance, but it has irritating effects on eyes and skin. Once contacted, it shall
be rinsed with water immediately. Brake fluid has an erosion effect on paint”, or
it may be supplemented by additional information.
