Foreword
This Standard is modified in relation to JIS G 3506.2004 “High Carbon Steel Wire Rod”
(English version).
This Standard is redrafted according to JIS G 3506.2004 and has the following major
technical differences compared with JIS G 3506.2004.
- The steel designation is different. ADOPT the steel designations in GB/T 699;
- ADD the requirements of rounding off of numerical values.
This Standard replaces GB/T 4354-1994 "Hot-rolled Quality Carbon Steel Wire Rods"
and has the following main modification compared with GB/T 4354-1994.
- CANCEL smelting in open-hearth furnace in "smelting process" of the original
standard;
- ADD the clause of order contents;
- CHANGE three groups of decarburized layer depth in "Technical Requirements"
of the original standard TO two groups;
- MODIFY dimension, shape and weight requirements in "Technical
Requirements";
- MODIFY the sampling quantity in "Test Methods";
- ADD the requirements of rounding off of numerical values.
This Standard is proposed by China Iron and Steel Association.
This Standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Iron
and Steel of Standardization Administration of China.

1 Scope
This Standard specifies the order contents, dimensions, shape, weight and
permissible tolerances, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules,
packing, marking and quality certificate of hot rolled quality carbon steel wire rods.
This Standard is applicable to hot rolled quality carbon steel wire rods for
manufacturing carbon spring steel wires, prestressed steel wires, high-strength
carbon constructional quality steel wires, coated steel wires, galvanized stranded
wires, steel wire ropes, etc.

3 Order contents
The order contract under this Standard shall cover the following contents.
a) Number of this Standard;
b) Product name;
c) Steel designation;
d) Specification and weight of wire rods;
e) Group of decarburized layer;
f) Other special requirements.
4 Dimensions, shape, weight and permissible tolerances
4.1 The dimensions, shape and permissible tolerances of wire rods shall be in
accordance with those specified in GB/T 14981, and the wire rods shall be regular.
4.2 The weight of each roll of wire rod shall not be less than 1000kg; 5% of the disc
number (2 discs are allowed for that less than 2 discs) may be allowed to be
composed of two roots of wire rods for each batch, but the weight of each root of wire
rod shall not be less than 300kg, and obvious marking shall be provided.
5 Technical requirements
5.1 Designation and chemical composition
5.1.1 The wire rods shall be manufactured by the steels of various designations in
GB/T 699, and their chemical composition shall be in accordance with those specified
in GB/T 699.
