Textiles - Testing and evaluation for heat insulation
Warning - The users of this standard shall carry out the test in a fume
hood or a well-ventilated place. They shall wear a mask, to avoid contact
with hot surfaces. When picking and placing specimens, they shall wear
protective mitts. Portable fire extinguishers shall be equipped near the
test device.
1 Scope
This standard specifies the testing and evaluation methods for the heat
insulation performance of heat insulation textiles when they contact high-
temperature solid surfaces for a short period of time.
This standard applies to contact-type kitchen insulation textile products, such
as heat insulating mitts and heat insulation pads.
This standard does not apply to heat insulation textiles which are exposed to
open flames.
2 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
2.1
Heat insulation
The material's ability to slow down and prevent heat conduction.
2.2
Heat insulating mitts
Gloves which are used to touch and move high-temperature tableware or
kitchen utensils in a short time, have certain heat insulation performance.
2.3
Heat insulating pads
Pads which are used to touch and move high-temperature tableware or
kitchen utensils in a short time, have certain heat insulation performance.
number of specimens according to actual needs. Take another one specimen
as a reference specimen, which is used for appearance evaluation. The
specimen shall be free of defects, such as damage, contamination, moisture,
that affect the heat insulation performance. The area of the specimen of heat
insulating mitts or the area of the specimen of heat insulating pad which had
been folded in half shall be larger than the bottom surface of the metal weight.
6 Test environment
The temperature is 15 °C ~ 30 °C; the relative humidity is 35% ~ 65%.
7 Test procedure
7.1 Place the aluminum foil paper (4.1.4) on the heating device (4.1.1). Replace
with a new aluminum foil paper for each test.
7.2 Turn on the heating device (4.1.1). If necessary, set the test temperature as
follows:
a) For the test of the specified insulation temperature, set the test
temperature according to the temperature indicated for the product, the
temperature specified by the product standard, or the temperature agreed
by the relevant parties;
b) For the test of the maximum heat insulation temperature, it may select one
specimen to perform pre-test at an appropriate temperature, which is
selected from 150 °C, 175 °C, 200 °C, 225 °C, 250 °C, 275 °C, 300 °C,
until it is determined the maximum test temperature that meets the
requirements of Table 1.
Table 1 -- Technical requirements for heat insulation performance
Test time Location of specimen Requirements
30 s Surface in contact with human skin Temperature ≤ 70 °C
3 min Surface in contact with aluminum foil paper No signs of scorching or melting
7.3 After the temperature of the heating device (4.1.1) reaches the set
temperature and is stable, use a thermocouple thermometer (4.1.2) to test the
temperature at the center of the surface of the aluminum foil paper (4.1.4),
which is laid on the hot surface of the heating device, until it reaches the set
temperature and is stable. Use this temperature as the test temperature. Then,
place the probe of another thermocouple thermometer (4.1.2) in the specified
part of the specimen. Place the specimen centered on the aluminum foil paper.
Make the use surface of specimen be in contact with the aluminum foil paper,
as shown in Figure 1.
For example, the maximum test temperature determined in the pre-test in 7.2
b) is 225 °C. Then, use 225 °C as the test temperature; perform the test
according to the provisions of 7.3 ~ 7.6. If the test results of the three specimens
meet the requirements of Table 1, it may be judged that the maximum insulation
temperature of the specimen is 225 °C. If one of the 3 specimens does not meet
the requirements of Table 1, then the test temperature is reduced to 200 °C;
take 3 new specimens to continue test according to 7.3 ~ 7.6. If the test results
meet the requirements of Table 1, it can be determined that the maximum
insulation temperature of the specimen is 200 °C.
8 Presentation of results
8.1 For the test of the specified heat insulation temperature, the temperature
(°C) of the specimen in contact with the human skin at the test time of 30 s and
the appearance change of the contacting aluminum foil surface after 3 min are
used as the test results. Take the worst result among the 3 specimens as the
final result of the test.
8.2 For the test of the maximum insulation temperature, the maximum test
temperature (°C) when all three specimens meet the technical requirements of
Table 1 is used as the test result.
8.3 The results are retained to integers.
9 Evaluations
When the test temperature of the use surface of the sample is ≥ 150 °C, the
heat insulation performance meets the technical requirements of Table 1, it can
be called a "heat insulation product".
For samples, whose heat insulation temperature is ≥ 150 °C, when the test
results of heat insulation performance under the stated or specified temperature
conditions meet the technical requirements of Table 1, the heat insulation
performance of the sample is judged to be "compliant"; otherwise it is "non-
compliant".
