Foreword
GB/T 3634 “Hydrogen” is divided into the following two parts
- Part 1. Industrial hydrogen;
- Part 2. Pure hydrogen, high pure hydrogen and ultrapure hydrogen.
This part is part 1 of GB/T 3634.
This part replaces GB/T 3634-1995 “Industrial hydrogen”.
As compared with GB/T 3634-1995, the main changes of this part are as
follows.
- In the Chapter of scope, ADD the hydrogen production methods and
industrial hydrogen application scopes (Chapter 1 of this version);
- ADD the relevant normative references (Chapter 2 of this version);
- IMPROVE the requirements for nitrogen content and argon content
(Chapter 3 of the 1995 version; Chapter 3 of this version);
- ADD the inspection rules for containerized products (SEE clause 4.1.1 and
4.1.2 of this version);
- MODIFY the test method; ADD the method of determining oxygen and
oxygen components (clause 4.3 of 1995 version; Appendix A of this
version);
- INCLUDE the chlorine and alkali measurement device schematics into the
normative appendix (Figure 2 of 1995 version; Appendix B of this version);
- INCLUDE the hydrogen volume calculation into the informative appendix
(clause 6.6 and Appendix A of 1995 version; Appendix C of this version).
Appendix A and Appendix B of this part are normative, AND Appendix C is an
informative appendix.
This part was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Association.
This part shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Gas Standardization
Technical Committee.

Hydrogen – Part 1. Industrial hydrogen
1 Scope
This part specifies the requirements, test methods, packaging and marking,
storage, transportation and safety requirements for industrial hydrogen.
This part is suitable for the hydrogen contained in cylinder, containerized, and
pipeline delivery which is made from chemical cracking, electrolysis,
adsorption, membrane separation, hydrogenation and other methods. It is
mainly used for such industries as the manufacturing, metal smelting, cutting,
and welding of petroleum, food, fine chemicals, glass and artificial gem.
Molecular formula. H2
Relative molecular mass. 2.01588 (in accordance with the 2001 International
Relative Atomic Scale)

on the oxygen contents as determined by the two methods, the method
specified in GB/T 6285 is used as the arbitration method.
4.5 Determination of chlorine and alkali
Determination of chlorine and alkali are as given in Appendix B.
5 Packaging, marking and storage
5.1 Hydrogen cylinders shall comply with the provisions of GB 5099, AND the
cylinder color mark shall comply with the provisions of GB 7144. When
transporting, the hydrogen cylinders shall be marked with the signs as
specified in GB 190.
5.2 The filling, marking and storage of hydrogen shall comply with the relevant
provisions of GB 14194 and the Gas cylinder safety supervision provisions.
5.3 The finished product pressure of the hydrogen contained in cylinder is
(13.5 ± 0.5) MPa at 20 °C. The accuracy of the pressure gauge for
measurement shall be not less than level 2.5.
5.4 The residual pressure of the hydrogen cylinder returned back to plant shall
not be less than 0.05 MPa. As for the gas cylinder having a residual pressure
failing to comply with requirements, the gas cylinder after hydraulic test, and
the new gas cylinder, before filling, it shall be heated, emptied and replaced as
specified.
5.5 Hydrogen shall be attached with a quality certificate during exit-factory,
which shall include at least.
- Product name, manufacturer name;
- Production date or batch number, finished product pressure, main
components and content;
- Standard number of this part, product level, and inspector number.
5.6 Calculation of hydrogen volume
SEE Appendix C for the calculation of hydrogen volume.
6 Safety requirements
6.1 The production, use and storage of hydrogen shall comply with the relevant
provisions of GB 4962, Provisions on safety management of hazardous
chemicals, and Special equipment safety supervision provisions.
6.2 Hydrogen is colorless, tasteless, flammable and explosive gas. The
hydrogen mixed with chlorine, oxygen, carbon monoxide, and air has a risk of

A.1.3 Determination conditions
A.1.3.1 Carrier gas. hydrogen having a volume fraction of not less than 99.99 ×
10-2, at a flow rate of about 40 mL/min.
A.1.3.2 Column. A stainless steel tube with a length of about 2 m and an inner
diameter of 3 mm, containing a 13X molecular sieve of 0.25 mm ~ 0.40 mm; or
other equivalent column. The column is hydrogenated for activation at 180 ° C
~ 220 ° C for about 3 h at a flow rate of 60 mL/min ~ 80 mL/min. The column is
used at room temperature.
A.1.3.3 Deoxygenated column. stainless steel tube with a length of 3 m and an
inner diameter of 3 mm, fitted with a 401 deoxidizer of 0.4 mm ~ 0.8 mm. The
use and activation of the deoxidizer is carried out in accordance with its
instructions.
A.1.4 Gas standard samples
The certified gas standard sample having a component content similar with the
corresponding component content in the sample gas, AND its balancing gas is
hydrogen.
A.1.5 Determination
After the instrument is stable, MAKE determination in accordance with the
instrument manual. MAKE parallel determination of the gas standard sample
and sample gas for at least two times; RECORD the peak area (or peak
height), until the relative deviation of the adjacent two measurements is not
more than 5 × 10-2; TAKE the average.
A.1.6 Result processing
USE the peak area (or peak height) for quantification; USE the external
standard method to calculate the results.
The volume fraction of oxygen (argon) and nitrogen volume is calculated
through the external standard method in accordance with the formula (A.1).
