GB/T 34682-2017 GB NATIONAL STANDARD OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA ICS 87.040 G 50 Determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in reactive diluent containing coatings ISSUED ON: NOVEMBER 01, 2017 IMPLEMENTED ON: MAY 01, 2018 Issued by: General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine; Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China. Table of Contents Foreword ... 3  1 Scope ... 4  2 Normative references ... 4  3 Terms and definitions ... 5  4 Principle ... 5  5 Instruments and equipment... 5  6 Sample ... 7  7 Test steps ... 7  8 Test data processing ... 8  Determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in reactive diluent containing coatings 1 Scope This Standard specifies terms and definitions, principle, instruments and equipment, sample, test steps as well as test data processing for determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in reactive diluent containing coatings. This Standard is applicable to the determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in reactive diluent containing coatings. It is inapplicable to determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in radiation curing coating. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB/T 3186, Paints varnishes and raw materials for paints and varnishes - Sampling GB/T 5206-2015, Paints and varnishes - Terms and definitions GB/T 6750, Paints and varnishes - Determination of density - Pycnometer method GB/T 6753.4-1998, Paints and varnishes - Determination of flow time by use of flow cups GB/T 9278, Temperatures and humidity for conditioning and testing of paint specimens GB 18582-2008, Indoor decorating and refurbishing materials - Limit of harmful substances of interior architectural coatings GB/T 20777, Paints and varnishes - Examination and preparation of samples for testing The diameter is (75±5)mm, and the edge height is 5mm or it can ensure that the sample does not overflow. The plates of different diameters can also be used. At this time, formula (1) is used to calculate the mass of the sample used for the test, m, in grams (g): Where, mstandard - Numerical value of the mass of the test standard sample, in grams (g); d - Numerical value of the diameter of the bottom of the plate, in millimeters (mm); 75 - Numerical value of the standard diameter of the plate, in millimeters (mm). NOTE: For viscous coating, it can also use approximately 0.1mm thick aluminum foil to cut into a rectangle with a size of (100±10)mm × (300±10)mm that can be folded in half. Spread the viscous liquid completely by gently squeezing the two parts folded in half. 5.2 Syringe Disposable syringe with a capacity of 10mL. 5.3 Oven WARNING - In order to prevent explosion or fire, samples containing volatile substances shall be handled carefully and implemented in accordance with relevant national regulations. To ensure the safety of the test, a forced convection oven shall be used, which can be kept within ±2°C of the specified or agreed temperature and equipped with horizontally placed partitions. It can also use a natural convection oven that a metal partition with holes is installed at 1/3 of the height of the studio. 5.4 Dryer Packed with a suitable desiccant, such as dry silica gel impregnated with cobalt chloride. 5.5 Balance Accuracy is 1mg. m = mstandard 6 Sample Conduct sampling according to GB/T 3186 or the agreed method. Sampling amount is determined according to inspection needs. Check and prepare samples according to GB/T 20777. 7 Test steps 7.1 Non-volatile content 7.1.1 Conduct two tests in parallel. 7.1.2 Degrease and clean the metal flat-bottom plate (see 5.1). In order to improve the precision, it is recommended to put the plate (see 5.1) in the oven (see 5.3) at (105±2)°C for 30min. Then place in the dryer (see 5.4) until use. 7.1.3 Prepare the sample according to the specified ratio and dilution ratio of the product. Mix well. If the amount of diluent used is within a certain range, it shall be determined after mixing according to the maximum dilution ratio specified in the recommended product construction ratio. 7.1.4 Weigh the mass of the metal flat-bottomed plate (see 5.1) m0, to the nearest of 1mg. Weigh (3±0.1)g of the sample to be tested (see 7.1.3) into the plate (see 5.1), to the nearest of 1mg. Record the mass m1 (at this time, m1 is the sum of m0 and the mass of the sample). For high-viscosity samples (according to GB/T6753.4-1998, use No. 6 outflow cup to measure the outflow time t≥74s) or easy-crusting samples, use a weighed wire (such as an unpainted curved paperclip) to flatten the sample (at this time, m0 is the sum of the mass of the wire and the plate). If necessary, add (3±1)mL of volatile suitable solvent (such as acetone, ethanol) that can dilute the sample. After mixing, spread the sample on the bottom of the plate. NOTE 1: For volatile samples, it is recommended to put the fully mixed sample into a bottle with stopper or into a weighable pipette or a 10mL syringe without needle (see 5.2). Use reduction method to weigh (3±0.1)g of the sample to be tested (to the nearest of 1mg) into the plate (see 5.1) (at this time, m1 is the sum of the mass of the sample and m0). Spread flat on the plate bottom. NOTE 2: If the sample to be tested is not completely spread at the plate bottom (see 5.1), incomplete curing due to local paint film being too thick may make the results of the non- volatile content test larger. 7.1.5 After weighing, place the metal flat-bottomed plate with the sample under the conditions of [temperature is (23±2)°C and relative humidity is (50±5)%] ......
