This Part belongs to Part 5 of GB/T 3098. This Part was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2009. This Part replaced GB/T 3098.5-2000 Mechanical Properties of Fasteners - Tapping Screws; compared with GB/T 3098.5-2000, the major technical changes are as follows. --- Increase Thread Specification ST 9.5 (Chapter 1); --- Reduce the maximum hardness of the core from 390HV to 370HV (4.1.3); --- Add “use the calibrated torque-measuring device according to provision of 3.2.2 in GB/T 3098.13” (6.2.2). This Part adopts the re-drafting method to modify and use ISO 2702. 2011 Heat- Treated Steel Tapping Screws – Mechanical Properties (English Edition). The technical differences and causes between this Part and ISO 2702. 2011 are as follows. --- In the Normative References, use national standards to replace international standards (Chapter 2); add the reference of GB/T 5280 (Chapter 1), so that conform to basic China fastener standard. This Part also makes the following editorial changes. --- Modify the standard name; --- Delete the bibliography of ISO 2702. This Part was proposed by China Machinery Industry Federation. This Part shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee for Standardization of Fasteners (SAC/TC 85). Drafting organization of this Part. China Productivity Center for Machinery. Participating drafting organizations of this Part. Machinery Industry General Product Mechanical Properties of Fasteners - Tapping Screws 1 Scope This Part of GB/T 3098 specifies the materials, technical requirements and test methods of tapping screws. This Part is applicable to the tapping screws manufactured by carburizing carbon steel, thread specification of ST2.2~ST9.5; and thread conforms to the provisions of GB/T 5280. 2 Normative References The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the amendments) are applicable to this standard. GB/T 3098.13-1996 Mechanical Properties of Fasteners - Torsional Test and Minimum Torques for Bolts and Screws with Nominal Diameters 1mm to 10mm (idt ISO 898-7.1992) GB/T 4340.1 Metallic Materials - Vickers Hardness Test - Part 1. Test Method (GB/T 4340.1-2009, ISO 6507-1.2005, MOD) GB/T 5280 Tapping Screws Thread (GB/T 5280-2002, idt ISO 1478.1999) 3 Materials The tapping screws shall be manufactured by the cold heading and carburizing carbon steel. 4 Technical Requirements 4.1 Metallic phase 4.1.1 Surface hardness The surface hardness of tapping screws after heat treatment shall be ≥450HV0.3 (see 5 Acceptance The conventional acceptance test can only include screw-in performance, breakaway torque and core hardness test; however, for the arbitration, all technical requirements specified in Chapter 4 shall be met. 6 Test Methods 6.1 Metallic phase test 6.1.1 Surface hardness test The Vickers-hardness test shall conform to the provisions of GB/T 4340.1. The surface hardness test shall be performed on the plane, and preferentially on the head of the tapping screw. 6.1.2 Carburized layer depth – metallic phase method The carburized layer depth test shall be performed on the side of the thread, the measuring point shall be at the 1/2 distance between tooth top and tooth bottom. For the tapping screw with thread specification≤ST3.9, it shall be measured on the tooth bottom. The arbitration test shall be performed on the thread profile by the test force with micro Vickers hardness of 300g. The carburized layer depth shall be calculated since the point with core hardness of 30 HV. 6.1.3 Core Hardness test The core hardness test shall conform to the provisions of GB/T 4340.1, and perform on the 1/2 cross section of the sufficient distance (with complete minor diameter of thread) away from the tapping screw end. 6.1.4 Microstructure test The microstructure test shall be performed as per the metallic phase test standard. 6.2 Mechanical property test 6.2.1 Screw-in property test Screw-in the tapping screw specimen (during acceptance period, with or without coatings) into the test plate, till a complete thread totally passes through the test plate. ......
