Foreword
This Standard is corresponding to ISO 589.2003 "Hard Coal-Determination of Total
Moisture". The consistent degree between this Standard and ISO 589.2003 is not
equivalent. Their main differences are as follows.
— According to China's realities, the 11.2mm and 2.8mm particle sizes are
replaced by the similar 13mm and 3mm particle sizes;
— The determination of total moisture with coal sample of particle size smaller than
6mm, under certain conditions, is added;
— The determination of total moisture by microwave-drying is added;
— Lignite is added into the scope.
This Standard replaces GB/T 211-1996 "Determination of Total Moisture in Coal".
Compared with GB/T 211-1996, this Standard has the main changes as follows.
— The foreword is added;
— The structure is adjusted so that it is basically consistent with that of ISO
589.2003.
— The mass of coal sample with particle size smaller than 13mm is changed to
3kg, and that of coal sample with particle size smaller than 6mm is changed to
1.25kg (3.1 of the previous edition; 6.1 of this edition);
— The determination of inherent moisture under nitrogen is added in the two-stage
method (7.1.2 of this edition);
— The particle size of samples for the determination of inherent moisture by the
two-stage method is changed from smaller than 6mm to smaller than 3mm
(7.3.2.2 in the previous edition; 7.1.2.1 in this edition).
Appendix A of this Standard is normative.
This Standard was proposed by the China National Coal Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on
Coal Chemical Industry of Standardization Administration of China.

Determination of Total Moisture in Coal
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the reagent, apparatus, procedures, result calculation and
precision for the determination of total moisture in coal.
The methods of drying under nitrogen (Method A1 and B1) are applicable to all types
of coals; the method of drying in air (Method A2 and B2) are applicable to bitumite and
blind coal; and the method of drying by microwave is applicable to bitumite and lignite.
Method A1 shall be the arbitration method.
2 Normative References
The following normative documents contain the provisions which, through reference in
this Standard, constitute the provisions of this Standard. For the dated references, the
subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions of these publications
do not apply. However, the parties who reach an agreement according to this
Standard are encouraged to study whether the latest editions of these documents are
applicable. For the undated references, the latest edition referred to applies.

Preparation" (GB/T 19494.2-2004, ISO 13909-4.2001 NEQ)

3 Method Summary
3.1 Method A (two-stage method)
3.1.1 Method A1. drying under nitrogen
Coal sample of certain amount with particle size smaller than 13mm is dried in the
environment where the temperatures do not exceed 40°C, until the constant mass is
reached. Crush the sample into particle size lower than 3mm; dry them under nitrogen
at (105~110)°C, until the constant mass is reached. Calculate the total moisture from
the loss in mass at each of the two stages.
3.1.2 Method A2. drying in air
5.3 Tray. made of heat-and-corrosion-resistant material such as galvanized iron and
aluminum, able to accommodate 500g of coal samples, with unit area loading not
exceeding 1g/cm2.
5.4 Glass weighing bottle. with diameter of 70mm, height of (35~40)mm, a tight
grinded lid.
5.5 Analytical balance. with a sensitivity of 0.001g.
5.6 Industrial balance. with a sensitivity of 0.1g.
5.7 Dryer. which contains allochroic silica gel or granular anhydrous calcium
chloride.
5.8 Flow meter. with a measuring range of (100~1000)mL/min.
5.9 Drying tower. with a volume of 250ml and contains allochroic silica gel or
granular anhydrous calcium chloride.
6 Sample
6.1 Coal sample
Coal sample for determining total moisture with particle size smaller than 13mm shall
not be less than 3kg; sample with particle size smaller than 6mm shall not be less
than 1.25kg.
6.2 Preparation of coal sample
6.2.1 Coal sample for determining total moisture with particle size smaller than
13mm shall be prepared according to GB 474 or GB/T 19494.2.
6.2.2 Coal sample for determining total moisture with particle size smaller than 6mm is
prepared through one time of crushing by the machine which causes no obvious
moisture loss1. Use a riffle immediately to divide the coal samples; and put a part not
less than 1.25kg in a sealed container.
6.3 Sealing condition of the container shall be checked before determining the total
moisture in coal sample. After that, clean the surface; weigh the sample with an
industrial balance to the nearest 0.1% of its total mass; check the result with the total
mass indicated on the label. If the result is less than the value on the label (not
exceeding 1%) and it can be ascertained that there is no sample loss during
transportation, then the mass reduced shall be regarded as that of the lost moisture.
1 "Causes no obvious moisture loss" means that the determination result of total moisture in
crushed coal samples, through examination, shows no significant difference from that
before crushing or shows difference but with very-small confidence range.
7.2 Method B (single-stage method)
7.2.1 Method B1 (drying under nitrogen)
7.2.1.1 Use a weighing bottle to weigh and take quickly (10~12)g of coal sample
with particle size smaller than 6mm (accurate to 0.001g), which has been pre-dried
and weighed; spread evenly.
7.2.1.2 Unlid the bottle; put it into an oven (5.2) which has been aerated with dry
nitrogen and preheated at (105~110)°C. Dry the bitumite for 2h, and lignite and blind
coal for 3h.
7.2.1.3 Remove the weighing bottle; put the lid on immediately; place it in air for
about 5min. Put it in a dryer; cool it to ambient temperature (for about 20min); reweigh
the bottle (accurate to 0.001g).
7.2.1.4 Conduct drying inspections, with 30min for every one, until each mass
reduction in two continuous inspections is less than 0.01g or the mass increases. In
the latter case, the mass of the previous inspection shall be adopted as the reference
for calculation.
7.2.2 Method B2 (drying in air)
7.2.2.1 Determination of total moisture in coal sample with particle size smaller than
13mm
7.2.2.1.1 Use a tray to weigh and take quickly (500 ± 10)g (accurate to 0.1g) of coal
sample with particle size smaller than 13mm, which has been pre-dried and weighed;
spread evenly.
7.2.2.1.2 Put the tray in an air drying oven which has been preheated to
(105~110)°C; dry the bitumite for 2h, and blind coal for 3h while blasting.
7.2.2.1.3 Remove the tray and weigh it (accurate to 0.1g) while hot.
7.2.2.1.4 Conduct drying inspection, with 30min for every time, until each mass
reduction in two continuous inspections is less than 0.5g or the mass increases. In the
latter case, the mass of the previous inspection shall be adopted as the reference for
calculation.
7.2.2.2 Determination of total moisture in coal sample with particle size smaller than
6mm
Except that the nitrogen-flushed oven is replaced by the air drying oven, the
procedures are the same as that in 7.2.1.
7.2.3 Result calculation
Total moisture in coal shall be calculated according to Formula (4);
The test report shall include the following information.
a) Sample No.;
b) Standard applied;
c) Result calculation;
d) Deviation to the standard;
e) Observed abnormal phenomena in testing;
f) Date of test.
