Foreword
GB/T 14454, Fragrance/Flavor substances, consists of the following parts:
-- Part 1: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Preparation of test samples;
-- Part 2: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Method for valuation of odour;
-- Part 4: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Determination of refractive index;
-- Part 5: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Determination of optical rotation;
-- Part 6: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Quantitative evaluation of residue
on evaporation;
-- Part 7: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Determination of freezing point;
-- Part 11: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Determination of content of
phenols;
-- Part 12: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Method for determination of trace
chlorinated compounds;
-- Part 13: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Determination of carbonyl value
and carbonyl compounds content;
-- Part 14: Fragrance/Flavor substances - Preparation of standard solution,
test solution and indicator solution;
-- Part 15: Oil of sassafras - Determination of safrole and isosafrole content
- Gas chromatographic method on packed columns.
This Part is Part 6 of GB/T 14454.
This Part modifies and adopts ISO 4715:1978, Essential oils - Quantitative
evaluation of residue on evaporation. Compared with ISO 4715:1978, the main
technical differences are as follows:
-- Remove the sampling method of ISO 4715:1978;
-- Add the evaluation of residue on evaporation for isolated and synthetic
fragrance.
This Part is a revision of GB/T 14454.6-1993, Fragrance/Flavor substances -
Quantitative evaluation of residue on evaporation. Compared with GB/T
14454.6-1993, this Part mainly adds relevant contents of the test report.
This Part was proposed by China National Light Industry Council.
Fragrance/Flavor substances -
Quantitative evaluation of residue on evaporation
1 Scope
This part of GB/T 14454 specifies the evaluation method for the residue on
evaporation of fragrance.
This section applies to essential oils, isolated and synthetic fragrances that
contain residues on evaporation.
2. Normative references
The terms in the following documents become the terms of this Part by
reference to this Part of GB/T 14454. For dated references, all subsequent
amendments (not including errata content) or revisions do not apply to this Part.
However, the parties who agree on this Part are encouraged to study whether
the latest versions of these documents can be used. For undated references,
the latest edition applies to this Part.

(GB/T 14454.1-2008, ISO 356:1996, MOD)
3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this part of GB/T 14454.
3.1
residue on evaporation
The sample to be tested is placed onto the boiling water bath for heating,
according to the time specified in the relevant product standards; obtain the
residue after evaporating off the volatile part, expressed in mass fraction.
4 Principle
4.1 Essential oil: Evaporate the volatile parts, on a boiling water bath; weigh the
mass of residue.
4.2 Isolated and synthetic fragrances: evaporate the volatile parts, on a boiling
water bath; dry to a constant-mass; then weigh the mass of residue.
5 Instruments
Commonly used instruments in the laboratory, especially the following
instruments:
5.1 Boiling water bath: There are some circular-holes with a diameter of about
55mm on the lid. The water level of the water bath shall be maintained
unchanged throughout the test, that is, about 50mm below the lid.
5.2 Evaporation dish: Corrosion-resistant glass, diameter is about 60mm, dish
height is about 30mm.
5.3 Desiccator: Containing desiccant silica gel inside.
5.4 Oven: It can control the temperature at 105°C ± 2°C.
5.5 Analytical balance.
6. Operating procedures
6.1 Essential oil
6.1.1 Preparation of sample
According to the provisions of GB/T 144.54.1.
