Test Method for Building Sealants - Part 9: Determination of Adhesion / Cohesion Properties after Immersion in Water 1 Scope This Part of GB/T 13477 specifies the method for the determination of adhesion / cohesion properties of building sealants after immersion in water. This Part is applicable to the determination of the influence of water immersion on the elongation at break and the adhesion with substrates of plastic sealants. It can also be used to determine the influence of water immersion on the adhesion / cohesion properties of elastic sealants. 2 Normative References The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. In terms of references with a specified date, only versions with a specified date are applicable to this document. In terms of references without a specified date, the latest version (including all the modifications) is applicable to this document. GB/T 13477.1 Test Method for Building Sealants - Part 1: Specifications for Test Substrates (GB/T 13477.1-2002, ISO 13640:1999, MOD) GB/T 14682 Building Sealing Material Vocabulary (GB/T 14682-2006, ISO 6927:1981, NEQ) 3 Terms and Definitions The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 14682 are applicable to this document. 4 Principle Adhere the sealant specimen between the surfaces of two parallel substrates to prepare a test piece. Immerse the test piece in water under specified conditions, then stretch the test piece to failure, report the elongation at break of the test piece, and record the form of failure of the sealant’s adhesion or cohesion. 5 Standard Test Conditions The standard test conditions of the laboratory are: temperature (23  2) C and relative humidity (50  5)%. 6 Test Apparatuses 6.1 Adhesion substrate: cement mortar board, glass plate or aluminum plate that complies with the stipulations of GB/T 13477.1; used to prepare test pieces. The shapes and dimensions of the substrate are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. For each test piece, two substrates of the same material shall be used. Alternatively, substrates of other materials and dimensions can also be selected as agreed upon by all parties, but the adhesion size and area of the embedded sealant specimen shall be the same as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. 6.2 Isolation pad: the surface shall be anti-adhesive; used to prepare test pieces with a sealant cross-section of 12 mm  12 mm (as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2). 6.3 Anti-adhesive material: anti-adhesive film or anti-adhesive paper, for example, polyethylene (PE) film, which should be selected in accordance with the recommendations of the sealant manufacturer. It is used to prepare test pieces. 6.4 Tensile testing machine: equipped with a recording device; capable of stretching test pieces at a speed of (5.5  0.7) mm/min. 6.5 Air blast drying oven: the temperature can be adjusted to (70  2) C; used to handle test pieces in accordance with Method B (see 8.3). 6.6 Container A: used to hold distilled water at (23  2) C and soak test pieces in accordance with Method B (see 8.3). 6.7 Container B: used to hold water at (23  2) C and soak test pieces. 7 Preparation of Test Piece Use a degreasing gauze to remove floating dust from the surface of the cement mortar board. Use solvents, for example, acetone, to clean the aluminum plate and glass plate, then dry them. In accordance with the sealant manufacturer’s instructions (for example, whether to use primer and the mixing procedures for multi-component sealants), prepare the test pieces. Maintain the sealant and substrate at (23  2) C. For each type of substrate and each test temperature, prepare 3 test pieces. As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, assemble two pieces of adhesion substrate and two pieces of isolation pad on the anti-adhesive material to form a cavity. Then, embed the sealant specimen in the cavity to prepare a test piece. When embedding specimens, the following matters shall be noted: a) Avoid the formation of air bubbles; b) Squeeze the specimen onto the adhesion surface of the substrate to ensure a tight 8.3 Method B Firstly, treat the test pieces in accordance with Method A. Then, treat the test pieces in accordance with the following procedures for 3 cycles: a) Store in a drying oven at (70  2) C for 3 days; b) Store in distilled water at (23  2) C for 1 day; c) Store in a drying oven at (70  2) C for 2 days; d) Store in distilled water at (23  2) C for 1 day. The above procedures can also be changed to c)  d)  a)  b). The test pieces treated by Method B shall be placed under the standard test conditions for at least 24 hours before testing. NOTE: Method B is a routine treatment procedure that utilizes heat and water to affect the curing speed of the test pieces, and it is not suitable to provide durability information of the sealant. 9 Test Procedures After performing the treatment in accordance with Method A or Method B, remove the pad. Immerse the test piece in water (6.7) at (23  2) C for 4 days, then, place it under the standard test conditions for 1 day. Put the test piece into the testing machine (6.4), at a speed of (5.5  0.7) mm/min, stretch it to failure. Record the force value - elongation value curve and the failure mode of the test piece. 10 Calculation of Test Results The elongation at break E is calculated in accordance with Formula (1) and expressed as a percentage. Take the arithmetic mean of 3 test pieces, accurate to 5%. Where, E---the elongation at break, expressed in (%); W0---the initial width of the test piece, expressed in (mm); W1---the width of the test piece at the time of failure, expressed in (mm). ......
