Glycerines
1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules,
markings, packaging, transportation, storage, shelf life of glycerin (glycerol).
This standard applies to industrially refined glycerin, which is produced from
glycerin-containing sweet water, that is produced by saponification, hydrolysis
or transesterification of animal and vegetable fats and oils.
2 Normative references
The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For
the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable
to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including
all the amendments) is applicable to this standard.
GB/T 8170 Rules of rounding off for numerical values & expression and
judgement of limiting values
GB/T 13216-2008 Test methods for glycerin
3 Product structure
Relative molecular mass: 92.09 (1987 international atomic weight).
4 Requirements
4.1 Traits
Colorless or slightly yellow transparent viscous liquid.
4.2 Physical-chemical indexes
The physical-chemical indexes of glycerin products shall meet the requirements
Carry out in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 11 of GB/T 13216-2008.
5.8 Acidity or alkalinity
Carry out in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 12 of GB/T 13216-2008.
5.9 Saponification equivalent
Carry out in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 13 of GB/T 13216-2008.
5.10 Arsenic content
Carry out in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 14 of GB/T 13216-2008.
5.11 Heavy metal content
Carry out in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 15 of GB/T 13216-2008.
5.12 Reducing substances
5.12.1 Reagents
a) Hydrochloric acid solution: Take 234 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid;
add water to dilute it to 1000 mL;
b) Sodium metabisulfite solution: 7.5% (mass fraction);
c) Decolorized para-fuchsin solution: Take 0.1 g of para-fuchsin
hydrochloride (C19H18ClN3). Place it in a 250 mL conical flask with stopper.
Add 60 mL of water. Add 10 mL of 7.5% sodium metabisulfite solution
[5.12.1b)]. Whilst slightly stirring it, add 4.5 mL of hydrochloric acid solution
[5.12.1a)]. Add the stopper. Shake to completely dissolve it. Add water to
100 mL. Shake well. Let it stand for 12 h before use;
d) Control substance solution: Formaldehyde (CH2O) aqueous solution, c =
5.0 μg/mL.
5.12.2 Instruments
Colorimetric tube with stopper, 50 mL.
5.12.3 Procedures
Take 3.75 g of the specimen. Place it in a colorimetric tube (5.12.2) with a
stopper. Add water to 15 mL. Mix well. Add 1.0 mL of decolorized para-fuchsin
solution [5.12.1c)]. Mix well. Add the stopper tightly. Let it stand for 1 h.
Take 7.5 mL of the control substance solution [5.12.1d)]. Treat it in the same
way. If the control substance solution does not show red, the test is invalid.
6.2.2 Sampling
For barreled products, the number of sampling units shall be determined,
according to the size of the batch (number of barrels) AND the requirements
specified in Table 2. The sample units shall be randomly taken on site.
Table 2 -- Batch size of barreled products AND the number of sampling
units In barrel
Take the same amount of samples from each sampling unit, according to the
provisions of Chapter 4 of GB/T 13216-2008.
For products in cans or in tank trucks, each can form a sampling unit. It shall
use a hanging bottle to take sample evenly from it.
The total amount of the two samples is not less than 2 kg. Mix them uniformly
(warm to 60 °C if necessary). Pack them into three clean and dry glass bottles
with stoppers. Tag and seal it. On the tag, it shall indicate the product name,
batch number, grade, sampling date, name of the manufacturer, sampling
person. Each of the supplier and receiver shall hold one set for inspection. The
third set is kept by the supplier, which is used for arbitration inspection, AND
has a storage period of one month.
If an indicator of the inspection result does not meet this standard, it shall double
the quantity of samples again, from the delivery batch, to re-inspect the
unqualified items. If the re-inspection is qualified, the batch of products shall be
deemed qualified; otherwise, the batch of products shall be deemed unqualified.
When the supplier and receiver have a dispute over the product inspection
results AND cannot be resolved through negotiation, the arbitration agency may
be consulted for inspection. The arbitration result shall be the final conclusion.
6.3 Judgment rules
For the inspection results, it shall use the rounding value comparison method
in GB/T 8170, to determine whether the product is qualified or unqualified. If
one or more indicators do not meet the requirements of this standard, it shall
take double quantity of samples, from the delivery batch, to re-inspect the
unqualified items. If the result of the re-inspection meets the requirements of
this standard, the batch of products will be judged as qualified. If it is still
unqualified, the batch of products will be judged as unqualified.
