Bar code terminology
1 Scope
This standard defines the terms and definitions of bar code basis, symbology,
bar code reading, bar code symbol production, bar code symbol detection.
This standard applies to research and application, which are related to bar code
technology.
2 Basic terminology
2.1
Bar code
A symbol, which is composed of a set of regularly arranged bars and spaces.
It can be read by the machine, to indicate certain information, including one-
dimensional bar code (2.2) and two-dimensional bar code (2.3).
2.2
Linear bar code; one-dimensional bar code
A bar code symbol, which represents information, in only one dimension.
2.3
Two-dimensional bar code; 2D code
Bar code symbols, which represent information, in both dimensions.
2.4
Symbology
Provisions regarding the bar code symbol's type, data representation
method, encoded volume, bar code character set and other characteristics.
2.5
Bar code system
A system, which is composed of design, production, scanning and reading
of bar code symbol.
clear area.
2.27
Bar code density
The number of bar code characters, which are represented by a one-
dimensional bar code per unit length OR a two-dimensional bar code per
unit area.
2.28
Inter-character gap
The area between adjacent bar code characters, wherein there is no specific
information AND which has the same reflectivity as the space.
2.29
Module
The narrowest constituent element of symbol characters, in one-dimensional
bar codes and stacked two-dimensional bar codes, OR the smallest
information carrying element in matrix two-dimensional codes.
2.30
Bearer bar
A border or frame, which surrounds the bar code symbol AND has the same
reflectivity as the bar.
2.31
Check code
Characters, that verify the correctness of the code, through mathematical
relationships.
2.32
Continuous bar code
Bar codes, which do not have inter-character gaps.
2.33
Discrete bar code
A bar code encoding method, in which the characters of the bar code symbol
are composed of a number of specified modules.
2.42
Odd permutation; odd parity
In the module combination encode, the sum of the number of modules, which
are contained in a bar code character, is an odd arrangement.
2.43
Even permutation; even parity
In the module combination encode, the sum of the number of modules, which
are contained in a bar code character, is an even arrangement.
2.44
Bar code logic value
The expression of using the binary "0" and "1" to represent the bar code
characters.
2.45
Encoded volume
The maximum number of characters, which can be represented in the bar
code character set.
2.46
Character value
The intermediate value of a one-dimensional bar code, which is converted
from bar code logic to character set.
2.47
Central separating character
In some GS1 data carriers (such as EAN/UPC bar code), several bars and
spaces, in the middle position of the bar code, to separate the data segment.
2.48
Amplification coefficient
2.55
Error correction character
Characters for error detection and error correction in 2D bar codes.
2.56
Error correction codeword
The value of the error correction character, in the 2D bar code.
2.57
Function pattern
The specific graphics, which are used for symbol positioning and feature
recognition, in two-dimensional matrix bar code symbols.
Note: Rewrite GB/T 18284-2000, definition 3.7.
2.58
Positioning pattern
A function pattern, which is used to determine the position of the symbol AND
the coordinates of the module, in the two-dimensional matrix bar code
symbol.
Note: Rewrite GB/T 18284-2000, definition 3.19.
2.59
Finder pattern
The function pattern, in the two-dimensional matrix bar code symbol, which
is composed of position detection graphics, to determine the position and
direction of the symbol.
2.60
Position detection pattern
One or more function patterns, which have specific shapes, in the two-
dimensional matrix bar code symbol, to form the finder pattern.
Note: Rewrite GB/T 18284-2000, definition 3.13.
2.61
empty codeword positions; they follow the last error correction codeword.
[GB/T 18284-2000, definition 3.15]
2.67
Mode
A method of expressing a specific character set as a binary bit stream.
Note: Rewrite GB/T 18284-2000, definition 3.10.
2.68
Mode indicator
Identifier, which indicates the encoding mode, as used for the subsequent
data sequence.
2.69
GS1 system
An open standard system -- which takes the encoding of trade item, logistic
element, position, asset, service relationship, documents, etc., as the core;
integrates the bar code, automatic data collection such as radio frequency,
electronic data exchange, global product classification, global data
synchronization, electronic product code (EPC); serves the global supply
chain management.
2.70
Bar code for commodity
The universal bar code symbols, which are used to identify commodities,
including codes and bar code representations for retail commodities, storage
and transportation packaged commodities, logistics elements, assets,
service relationships, the location of participants.
2.71
Bar code in-store
The bar code, which has a prefix code of 20 ~ 24, AND is used to identify
the products processed by the store and sold in the store AND the variable
products.
2.72
A continuous fixed-length one-dimensional bar code, which is managed and
maintained by the International Article Numbering Association (GS1), AND
can only represents the numeric characters, including EAN-13, EAN-8,
UPC-A, UPC-E bar codes.
Represented character set: Number: 0 ~ 9
3.1.2
EAN-13 bar code
The bar code symbol, which is used to represent GTIN-13.
3.1.3
EAN-8 bar code
The bar code symbol, which is used to represent GTIN-8.
3.1.4
UPC-A bar code
The bar code symbol, which is used to represent GTIN-12.
3.1.5
UPC-E bar code
The 8-bit coded bar code symbol, which is used to represent the GTIN-12
AND formed through zero removal compression.
3.1.6
2 of 5 bar code
A non-continuous, non-fixed-length one-dimensional bar code, which
represents information by bars. Each bar code character is composed of 5
regularly-arranged bars, of which there are two wide elements AND the rest
are narrow elements.
Represented character set: Number: 0 ~ 9
3.1.7
Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code
A variation of the 2 of 5 bar code. Bars and spaces both represent continuous,
non-fixed-length one-dimensional bar codes of information. The bar code
