GB/T 12705-1991 GB NATIONAL STANDARD OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA UDC 677.017.8 W 55 Textiles Fabrics - Testing Method for Penetration Resistance to Feather and Down ISSUED ON: JANUARY 14, 1991 IMPLEMENTED ON: OCTOBER 01, 1991 Issued by: State Bureau of Technical Supervision Table of Contents 1 Theme Contents and Scope of Application ... 3 2 Normative References ... 3 3 Term ... 3 4 Principle ... 3 5 Apparatus and Materials ... 4 6 Samples ... 5 7 Specimens ... 5 8 Conditioning and Standard Atmosphere for Test ... 6 9 Test Procedures ... 6 10 Test Results ... 7 11 Test Report ... 7 Appendix A (Reference) Test Method for Penetration Resistance to Feather and Down after Washing ... 8 Appendix B (Reference) Testing Machine ... 9 Additional Information ... 10 Textiles Fabrics - Testing Method for Penetration Resistance to Feather and Down 1 Theme Contents and Scope of Application This Standard specifies a testing method for penetration resistance to feather and down for textile fabrics. This Standard is applicable to all kinds of textile fabrics made of lining and fabric of down products. 2 Normative References GB 3921 Textiles – Tests for Color Fastness to Washing GB 6529 Standard Atmospheres for Textiles Conditioning and Testing 3 Term Penetration resistance to feather and down The performance of fabrics to prevent down or feathers from penetrating and leaking between yarn gaps. It is expressed by the number of penetrating downs under specified conditions. 4 Principle The specimen is made into a bag filled with a certain mass of down; then place it in the testing machine’s rotating box equipped with hard rubber balls. Through the constant speed rotation of the rotating box, the rubber balls are brought to a certain height to impact the specimen in the box. In this way, it can simulate the various squeezing, kneading and collision effects of down products during serving; and the penetration resistance to feather and down of the fabrics can be evaluated by counting the number of down roots penetrated and leaked from the inside of the sample. 7.2.2 Roll the bag mouth into 1cm; add a stitch in the center of the bag to divide the specimen into two small bags. 7.2.3 Use a balance to weigh 25±0.1 g of the conditioned down for twice; and put them into two small bags, respectively. 7.2.4 Use the forward-and-backward needle to sew the bag mouth at 0.5cm from the edge; and conduct needle-returning of 0.5~1cm on both ends. 7.2.5 Seal the suture with sealing liquid to prevent feathers or down from penetrating the suture during the test, which will affect the test results. 8 Conditioning and Standard Atmosphere for Test 8.1 The temperature of the standard atmosphere used in the test is 20±2°C; and the relative humidity is 65%±3%. 8.2 The specimen bag and down filling material shall be placed under the specified standard atmospheric conditions for conditioning for 24h. 9 Test Procedures 9.1 Remove the feathers, down, velvets, etc. inside and outside the rotary box of the testing machine; wipe off the hard rubber balls; and place 10 of the balls into the rotary box. 9.2 Carefully check the outer surface of the specimen bag to be tested for any feathers, down or velvets left during sewing. When it is sure that there are none, put it in the rotary box, one specimen bag at a time. 9.3 The preset number of revolutions of the counter is 1000 times. Press the forward start button and the rotary box starts to rotate. 9.4 After the automatic stop at full number, take out the specimen bag from the rotary box; carefully check and count the number of feathers, down and velvets, etc. penetrated out; and then check and count the number of down in the rotary box and on the rubber ball. 9.5 Put the specimen bag in the rotary box again; reset the counter to zero; press the reverse start button; the rotary box shall reversely rotate 1000 times; and after automatic stop at full number, repeat the procedure 9.4. Add-up the number of down roots counted twice to get the test result of a specimen bag. NOTE: ① Feather, down or velvets, etc. are penetrated out of the cloth as one piece, Appendix A (Reference) Test Method for Penetration Resistance to Feather and Down after Washing This method is only used when evaluating the penetration resistance to feather and down of the tested fabrics after washing. A1 Test procedure A1.1 The operation of the specimen bag before washing is the same as 9.1~9.5. A1.2 Remove the exposed feathers, down and velvets from the specimen bags; put the three specimen bags in a household washing machine; and pour 25 L of detergent with a temperature of 40°C and a concentration of 0.1%. Wash for 15min at the ordinary washing degree; then wash twice by clean water for 10min each time; and finally centrifuge for 5min; hang and dry in the air. A1.3 Remove the residues on the surface, and carry out the conditioning treatment according to Clause 8. A1.4 The following operations are the same as 9.1~9.5. A2 Test results It is expressed by the arithmetic average of the number of penetrated down roots after washing from three specimen bags (accurate to an integer). A3 Recommended reagents It is the same as 4.3 in GB 3921. ......
